August 8 Deadline to request an appeal (post appeals the next day)

August 15 Deadline to submit an opposition to an appeal (post appeals the next day)

August 23 Appeal Committee meets to hear appeals and recommend the final alignment plan to the Executive Committee for 2023 – 2027.

Gainesville and Potomac will appeal to remain in Class 6:

The quote from the Gainesville AD sounds like they don't realize that the classification is just based on Grades 9-11 enrollment now. As a new school I can picture their enrollment being higher in the next couple years though. For Potomac it sounds like they just don't want to keep bouncing between classes.

NEWS: VHSL Region Alignment: The Appeals

In response to the Virginia High School League's Alignment Committee recommendation for regions in all six classifications for the period from Fall 2023 to Spring 2027, individual schools, and school systems, were allowed to file petitions for appeals. They are all listed below, with #RVA area requests in bold, as well as schools whose appeal, if granted, would place them into a region with schools from our metropolitan area.
Schools and divisions who may object to these appeals may do so no later than Monday, August 15th with justification for their objection. Those are scheduled to be made public a week from now, Tuesday, August 16th. The Alignment Committee will meet again Tuesday, August 23rd to vote on their final recommendation, which, once approved, will be sent to the League's Executive Committee for a vote on September 21st.

ALERT: @VHSL_ releases appeals to 2023-27 Region Alignment.

@matoacahsathlet individually requests move to Class 5, Region C from @VHSLRegion4B

@ccpsinfo requests all ten County schools be placed together in one group.

New Mecklenburg HS requests move down to Class 4, Region D from Class 5, Region C, while Albemarle requests the opposite....

@MLWGS requests to stay in #Region3B instead of moving to 2A.

@CAVSofCHS request stay in #Region3B instead of moving to 4B

@DRathletics and @GAJagAthletics both request to stay in #Region5C instead of moving up to #Region6A....
I find it interesting that Varina is not requesting to move up and “settling” for the lower, easier D4. DR and GA have no business in D6 for football. I figured the CCPS would want all their schools in the same division. They are super serious about all their schools staying “equal” in every aspect.

I don't consider Varina remaining in Region 4B settling... I would argue 4B has become tougher than 5C. Highland Springs moving up to 6A, Manchester moved from 5B to 6A in the last cycle. 5C is going to be wide open minus Hermitage and say Louisa.

Chesterfield is requesting a district to themselves, not a division.

In theory...
New Dominion District
Clover Hill
Cosby
James River
LC Bird
Manchester
Matoaca
Meadowbrook
Midlothian
Monacan
Thomas Dale

New Central District
Colonial Heights
Dinwiddie
George Wythe
Hopewell
Huguenot
Petersburg
Powhatan
Prince George

so is the motivation scheduling? This does not affect their regions.

Varina IS settling! D4 at the STATE LEVEL is nowhere close to the STATE LEVEL at D5,and you know I’m right. King George and Salem do not compare in any way shape or form to Maury or Stonebridge. the proof was proven ON the field. Varina never won a D5 title, and as you know, they lost to Maury on the field. Btw…there is NO TEAM in the Varina region that could beat Hermitage. That’s why I say….”settling”. Jmo

I’m also trying to figure out why Varina has not improved their schedule like Highland Springs has. Thoughts?

I imagine Varina will be back in Class 5 in a few years.

By the ADM numbers Varina is 1120, 1205 is the last Class 5 school in Potomac Falls. In between the two are Monacan and Atlee so Varina's placement is correct according to the numbers. You have to play where you are assigned unless you meet certain criteria to appeal.

I give you your due, you are good at stoking the rivalry.

but if you want Varina back in C5 give them their kids back and that way HS can be back in C5 too. ;)

Per VHSL... Richmond Region's Deep Run & Glen Allen were denied move down to 5C beginning next season and will in fact be 6A.
