What a week this turned out to be as far as performances go. This week I received not only the most nominations I have all season but stiff competition from everyone. There was no shortage of excellent play in the Richmond Region. Let's take a look.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Run Gamers
Wesley Dugger, Mills Godwin
Mills Godwin improved to 2-2 this week in a 27-5 win over Patrick Henry. In victory, the Eagles got a big game out of running back Wesley Dugger. Dugger has shown he is more than capable of getting it done on the ground and Friday night was no exception. In the win, Dugger rushed for almost 200 yards (190 to be exact) and scored three touchdowns in doing so. The Eagles are getting better from week to week and so is Dugger.

Stephen Mines, LC Bird
The Skyhawks reputation in the run game is unmatched and the region and Mines continues to make his case for such distinction. On Friday night in a 42-7 win over Monacan, Mines carried the ball 19 times on his way to 178 yards on the ground. In two weeks Mines has amassed nearly 400 yards and on this night he scored twice as Bird remains undefeated.

Alisshuwa Beacoat, Varina
Varina got back on track this Friday night with a win over Varina. The run game of Varina right itself in the win with Alisshuwa Beacoat going the distance with 160 yards on the ground in the win. Those 160 yards came on just 7 carries which comes to about 22 yards per carry. Beacoat also found the endzone twice on this night and certainly did his part to help the Blue Devils get their second win of the season.

Passing Gamers
Maliki Gurley, Prince George
The Royals engaged in a shootout Friday night in an effort to remain undefeated… While they did score 37, they failed to win but in doing so, Gurley put up some big numbers… On Friday night Gurley completed just 14 of his 32 passes but amassed 266 yards in the air on his way to five touchdowns on the night. On any other night, this kind of play might have won you the game but nonetheless, not a bad night for the Royals QB.

Bryce Witt, Dinwiddie
Imagine a Generals quarterback making this list, like that's never happened before… On Friday night Witt had a big game at the expense of the Colonials as Witt completed 12 of his 17 passes while passing for 260 yards and four touchdowns. Witt is just the latest quarterback in the Generals program but like those before him, he continues to make a name for himself.

Brandon Sulser, Lee-Davis
Brandon Sulser made a name for himself Friday night even if the Confederates didn't come out on the winning side. Sulser put the ball in the air 24 times with just nine being completions. That's not exactly a great percentage rate but given the fact that with those nine passes he covered 208 yards in the air and scored two fourth quarter touchdowns, I'd say that makes for a pretty good night.

Receiving Gamers
Malik Gurley, Prince George
Brothers on and off the field, the Gurley brothers are getting it done at Prince George. They might have come out on the losing end of a shootout Friday night but Malik showed why the Royals are a threat for the playoffs. On Friday night Malik caught six passes from his brother on his way to 120 yards receiving. Furthermore he scored two of the five touchdowns his brother threw. This is not the last we've heard of either Gurley this season.

Derrick Jones, Dinwiddie
Derrick Jones made his presence felt against the Colonials on Friday night as the Generals took care of business 56-0. Derrick caught just four passes from quarterback Bryce Witt but of those four caught; he took two to the house while compiling 113 yards receiving. Not a bad night of work for the Generals receiver as the Generals just keep rolling.

Christian Redman, James River
The Rapids got back on the winning side of the spectrum Friday night in 44-0 shutout of Midlothian. Not only did the Rapids get it done on defense but certainly so on offense. Christian Redman caught seven passes Friday night and nearly eclipsed the century mark receiving (98 to be exact) while scoring a touchdown in a much needed Rapids win.

Defensive Gamers
Kevonte Demery, Henrico
The Warriors shocked many with their win over Atlee Friday night but it should come as no shock given how defensively strong this team is, evident by their three shutouts in four games. One player key to the defense and the success Friday night is Kevonte Demery. On Friday night Kevonte had 10 tackles on the Raiders, five of which were for losses and he even got to the quarterback recording one sack. Kevonte and the Warriors are at the top of their game and this is a defense to watch out for.

Arnold Roots, Varina
Varina needed a win and they got it in all phases of the game. The defense shined as it had been expected to this season and one of those who shined was Arnold Roots. Roots got to the quarterback three times on Friday night and in the fourth quarter; Roots intercepted one of the Confederates passes and took it 30 yards for a touchdown. That kind of play on defense will help snap any losing streak.

Nigel Wilder, Hermitage
The Panthers remain undefeated after their final meeting with Thomas Jefferson on Saturday. In their 42-0 shutout of the Vikings, the defense shined as you can expect and one of those unsung heroes was Nigel Wilder. Nigel on Saturday recorded 10 tackles versus the Vikings and two of those 10 tackles were for losses. Defense wins championships and the Panthers are getting better and better on defense.

Special Teams Gamers
Tye Freeland, Petersburg
The Royals had just scored their first points of the night and back to receive the kickoff was Tye Freeland. 85 yards later, Freeland was in the endzone having returned the punt for a touchdown and thus extending the Crimson Wave lead and answering the Royals score. The Crimson Wave got it done on Friday on offense and specials teams as they handed the Royals their first loss of the season.

Brandon Crosby, Atlee
The Raiders were down 14-22 in the closing minutes of their matchup with Henrico. The Raiders needed a big play and they got it when Henrico punted to the Raiders and Brandon Crosby touched it. Racing 80 yards down field, Crosby evaded the Henrico defenders as he took the punt into the endzone as the Raiders attempted a late comeback. The Raiders fell short but not with an exciting finish to the game.

Keaton Riley, LC Bird
Nursing an 8 point lead in the second quarter over Monacan, Riley came through for his team when he was needed. Riley kicked a 31-yard field goal to extend the Skyhawks lead and cement the Skyhawks lead as it was on from there as the Skyhawks never looked back even after a Chiefs touchdown. Always good to know you can count on your kicker.

All-Puprose Gamers
Trent Williams, Thomas Dale
The Knights have evened their record at 2-2 and on Friday night in a big win over Hopewell, Trent did more than his part to help the Knights to victory. On the ground, Williams totaled 136 yards on eight carries and three of those eight carries he found the endzone. Williams also intercepted a Cameron Hill pass and took it to the house for an 88 yard touchdown. 4 touchdowns, 1 night, Williams got it done for the Knights.

De'Shaun Waller, Armstrong
The Wildcats are 4-0 which doesn't happen often for Armstrong and a big part of that success comes from the play of their quarterback. De'Shaun didn't do a lot of scoring with just one touchdown on the night but he did amass over 300 yards on offense with 169 passing and 143 on the ground. Waller continues to lead the Wildcats to success.

Daniel Rose, Manchester
The Lancers are 5-0 for the first time since 1971 and Rose continues to lead his team to success be it ground or air. Friday night in a 47-3 win over Clover Hill, Rose completed 9 of his 14 passes for 143 yards in the air and one touchdown. His impact was felt on the ground as well with 5 carries for just 47 yards but two touchdowns bringing his total to three touchdowns on the night for the Lancers. The Lancers and Rose just keep winning.
