Every team in the Richmond Region has played six games now. Hard to believe that half the season is behind us and each week we are closer and closer to the playoffs. The season is going much too quick and before we know it, we will be talking about the season that was and next season. So let's take a minute to appreciate what we have going on because from week to week, we never know what we are going to get and this week was no exception.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Thomas Dale 28-10 over Meadowbrook
I thought the winner of this game would be the one who was able to run the ball… I stand corrected. Thomas Dale's run game was held in check for much of the night, held to just 22 yards on 15 carries while Justin Miller alone for Meadowbrook finished with 119 yards… however he never got in the endzone. The only Monarch to get into the endzone would be that of quarterback D'Angelo Amos who scored the first touchdown of the night for either team with a 27-yard quarterback keeper. The Knights answered with a touchdown pass from Khalid Morris and at the half, it was 7 all. A tight game to say the least but what you expect in a district rivalry game. In the third quarter Meadowbrook struck back with a field goal to retake the lead but that was the last time the Monarchs would score but the same could not be said for the Knights. The Knights pulled off a reverse when Eric Finney handed off to Corey Leonard and he took off down field for a 59-yard touchdown that gave the Knights their first lead and they never looked back from there. The Knights would score twice more, with an offensive and defensive touchdown. Sam Stark on defense for the Knights had 10 tackles and Alonzi Carter came up with 78-yard interception return for a touchdown as the defense for Thomas Dale held Meadowbrook's offense scoreless in the second half. After losing the first two games of the season, the Knights have won four straight with just four games to go and another playoff berth is within sight. As for Meadowbrook, the Monarchs are now 2-4 and with Dinwiddie still to go, the Monarchs could be 5-5 and in a dogfight for that lost spot in 5A South playoffs.

UPSET OF THE WEEK
James River 13-6 over Cosby
The Cosby Titans were undefeated, 5-0 facing a James River team that was 3-3 coming into this one and had never beaten the Titans. The Rapids who missed the playoffs at 6-4 last season know they can ill afford to lose another game and going into this one, they made sure that didn't happen. This game was not won until the fourth quarter, in fact, it was scoreless for the first half of play but Cosby changed that with a Quincy Payne 45-yard interception return for a touchdown. Who knew that defensive touchdown would be the only Titan score. Within 21 seconds in the fourth quarter, the tide of the game and perhaps the season for James River changed just like that. It began with James River's Cameron Green punching it in from four yards out after driving 64 yards. That gave the Rapids a 7-6 lead and on the ensuing kickoff, the Titans fumbled and Ben Wheeler came up with the loose ball. After a penalty, the Rapids were backed up to the 31 but that was no problem for the Rapids as Green raced 28 yards to the 3 and one play later they were in the endzone. The Rapids took this one 13-7 for their first win over Cosby and handed them their first loss of the season. The Rapids at 4-3 still must face Manchester but have only helped their chances at a playoff spot with this win.

REST OF THE REGION
Clover Hill 53-6 over George Wythe
The Cavaliers got their second win of the season behind the run game and defense. The Cavaliers defense shut the Bulldogs out in three out of the four quarters. Clover Hill had a 27-0 lead before the Bulldogs got their touchdown. Five of Clover Hill's touchdowns came on the ground by four different players. Dre Crawley threw two touchdowns as well for Clover Hill and another score came from a 20-yard interception return to the endzone. The Cavaliers might not be in position for a playoff spot this season but each win this team gets will only help a very young team come next season as they gain more and more experience on the field.

Hermitage 51-0 over Deep Run
The Panthers are now 6-0 and on their way to quite possibly being the top seed in 5A South playoffs and for Deep Run, it's not getting any better. Johntae Wilson torched the Wildcats defense for 236 yards on the ground and four touchdowns… Three of his four touchdowns were the first three scores of the game. The Panthers run game scored twice more on the night and Eli Odom threw just one touchdown playing for an injured Rashad Robinson. Of course you don't get a shutout without defense and Calvin Whitehead was huge for the Panthers with four tackles, one sack and a blocked punt. The Panthers just continue to roll and Wildcats are still looking for that first win of the season.

Douglas Freeman 14-12 over Mills Godwin
The Eagles had rebounded from their 0-2 start over the last three games but that came to a halt against a one-loss Rebels team. Freeman scored twice in the first half on an Evan Tyler touchdown run and a Tanner Toy touchdown pass. That lead held until the fourth quarter when Eagles quarterback Taylor Kickler brought the Eagles within two points of the Rebels. The Eagles PAT on their first touchdown was blocked by the Freeman D and the two-point conversion that would have tied the game failed. The Rebels held onto victory and are now 5-1 heading into next week's big game against Hermitage. Godwin is still in contention for that last spot in the 5A playoffs but at 3-3, they cannot afford to lose many more.

Henrico 7-3 over Hanover
The Hawks got on the board with a field goal in the second quarter and that looked as though it would be enough to win the game but the Warriors came on strong in the final minutes of the game and marched 90 yards down field with the assistance of a few penalties against Hanover. With seconds left in the game Andre Taylor hit Kadofi Wright with a 6-yard touchdown pass and the Warriors got the win and improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1999. For the Hawks, their third loss of the season drops them to 3-3 and will face Armstrong next week for Homecoming as they look to avoid their fourth straight loss.

Highland Springs 35-30 over Armstrong
A week ago Armstrong took down Varina, a team they had lost to 28 straight times, could they do the same to the undefeated Springers? Why not, Armstrong was 5-0 themselves but the answer you are looking for is no but they did give the Springers a scare. After a Marcus Taylor touchdown in the first quarter, Armstrong scored twice to make it 13-7. That would be the last time the Wildcats would lead. Highland Springs would score three more times before the Wildcats would, including a safety. The Springers led 35-22 going into the fourth quarter and it seemed as though the Springs would survive but Armstrong made it interesting with less than three minutes to go on a 9-yard touchdown pass to LeRobert Alexander from DeShaun Waller. The Wildcats as you can imagine attempted an onside kick but the Springers recovered and ran out the clock thus thwarting any chance of an Armstrong comeback.

Hopewell 68-30 over Colonial Heights
After one quarter of play the Blue Devils trailed by five, 13-18 was the score. The Blue Devils in the second quarter caught fire outscoring the Colonials 55-12 the rest of the way with three touchdowns in the second and third quarters. While the offense caught fire, the defense stepped up to keep the Colonials out of the endzone and seal a victory bringing a halt to their three game losing streak. Both teams will have challenges next week, Colonial Heights facing a red hot Thomas Dale team and Hopewell facing a pesky Petersburg team. While Cameron Hill has been one of the standouts this season on the Blue Devils team, the star of this show was the run game; the Blue Devils had eight touchdowns runs by four different players.

Monacan 36-0 over Huguenot
This one was never really in dobt. Khalik Hamlin scored first for the Chiefs in the first quarter and ironically enough was the last score of the night, both on 10-yard touchdowns run. The Chiefs might have scored thirty-six but two of the scores came off of turnovers with a 20-yard fumble recovery and 12-yard interception return. Monacan is having their best season in quite a few years and continues to build towards a high seed come playoff time. Huguenot on the other hand is a team that is still in pursuit of their second win of the season.

Thomas Jefferson 21-14 over John Marshall
The Vikings seasons a year after they reached the playoffs has been one to forget with an 0-5 start but Homecoming 2014 is one game they will remember. At halftime the Vikings led 14-7 but in the fourth quarter the Justices were able to tie with an 18-yard touchdown pass but the Vikings had an answer for them. That answer was a touchdown drive of their own that culminated with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Shawn Winston. The win was the first for the Vikings this season and while it might be a stretch for the Vikings to make the playoffs this year, the fact that they got a win now coupled with Deep Run still on the schedule, if they could get two wins in their next four games, they could punch a ticket back in.

Patrick Henry 27-13 over JR Tucker
The Patriots got their second win of the season with a solid game from the Harts. Quarterback Hunter Hart passed for 190 yards and a 69-yard touchdown that got the Patriots the first score of the night. Aaron Hart had two receptions for 91 yards while scoring a touchdown. The Patriots got off to a 13-0 lead before the Tigers got on the board with Malik VanBrussel scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run. In fact, VanBrussel had a hand in both Tiger touchdowns as he with time expiring he threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Hasaan Meyers. This win could be just the start for the Patriots with Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and Deep Run over the next three weeks. It is conceivable that the Patriots could find themselves in the postseason if they can win these next three. As for Tucker, at 2-4 any hopes of making the playoffs are fading quick as the losses begin to pile up.

Lee-Davis 10-6 over Glen Allen
The Jaguars after the first half appeared as though they might be coming away with their second win of the season up 6-0. Unfortunately for them the Confederates wanted their second win as well and in the third quarter Stephen Hall came through with a 5-yard field goal and in the fourth Nathan Evans punched one in from 8-yards out to take the lead for good and hand the Jaguars their fifth straight loss. Things won't get any easier as Glen Allen faces Atlee this week and Lee-Davis has Highland Springs. Both teams at this point are just looking to finish strong as their playoff hopes fade.

LC Bird 43-7 over Midlothian
The Skyhawks rebounded from their first loss since 2011 with a 36-point victory over the Midlothian Trojans. The Trojans lone score came in the fourth quarter after this one was already sewn up. Jalen Elliott had a big game with three touchdown passes, hooking up with Kier Townsend twice and Tyler Wilkins with the other. Daijuane Dorsey came up with a big play in the second quarter on a 68-yard punt return but he wasn't the only one with a big special teams play. Keyan Gant came through in the fourth with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after Bird had scored their final touchdown of the night. With the victory, Midlothian is still winless against Bird going back to 1986 and also winless on the season.

Petersburg 24-21 over Matoaca
This one took four quarters and was back and forth the entire game as neither team relented. It was a 31-yard touchdown for Gemonta Jackson in the fourth quarter as an answer to the Warriors 45-yard touchdown pass moments before that sealed victory for the Crimson Wave. For Petersburg, they are now 3-3 matching their win total of last season as they work towards another playoff appearance whereas at 2-4, Matoaca cannot afford many more losses and with Dinwiddie next week, that is easier said than done.

Dinwiddie 37-0 over Prince George
This one was scoreless through the first quarter but the Generals got on the board with a Dakari Wilson 17-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Bryce Witt. The Generals scored once more in the second quarter with James Lyons first touchdown of two on the night and the Generals never looked back. The Generals have now won five straight after their season opening loss and for the Royals, a team looking to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1994, it's not going to plan having dropped three straight and having Meadowbrook next week.

Atlee 40-13 over Varina
A long season just continues to get longer for Varina as they fall to Atlee for a second straight season. The Blue Devils were down 37-0 before they ever got on the board with a Donnell Martin 38-yard touchdown run. Varina would tack on another with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Desmond Smith but it was much too little too late. Varina was no match for the offensive attack of Atlee that saw five different players score for Atlee not including Ethan Ratke's field goal or CJ Tilton's safety on Shawn Tyler. With the loss, Varina falls to 2-4 and with Henrico this week and Highland Springs at the end of the season, the Blue Devils could be looking at a losing season. For Atlee, they look to be on track for another high seed and strong run in the playoffs.
