Daily Progress Newspaper did not continue the holiday hoops classic so Bart Isley at scrimmageplay picked up the tab and created the 1st annual Scrimmage Play Winter Classic. Brought in 3 really good teams, 4-2 Landon School (Bethesda, MD), 8-0 Norfolk Collegiate and 4-2 Patrick Henry(Roanoke) to join 6-0 host Charlottesville.

Charlottesville Sr. Aidan Yates was named Classic MVP. Black Knights are a legit contender for the 4A title, add these two wins to a 59-55 thriller over rival Albemarle last week and they've got 3 really quality wins. The thing about this team is their defense. 6'9 Sr. Center Luka Matic alters so many shots, Yates at 6'4 is lethal shooter but also averages 2 blocks per game. The length of the 6'1 Guards Nasir Sumpter, Jacoby Lynch and the football guys 5'9 Guards Lamarione Brock Lacrosse star Che Lewis. It's the best defensive group Mitch Minor has had in a long time. The length coupled with his classic in your face style of defense has only allowed 48 PPG through their 8-0 start. If they stay healthy, they should be a shoe in for the State Playoffs and should be able to go toe to toe with anyone in Class 4.

Winning these close games will be big for the Black Knights in the playoffs. Agreed they have the best defensive group in a long time. The last team that comes to mind that was this good on that side of the ball was the 2015 squad, when Charlottesville won the Jefferson regular season and tournament title and went 24-2. It's so strange seeing a Black Knight team with such good size. Matic has come a long way, and when he is finishing well, there's not a lot teams can do on him. If Yates is hitting shots he's one of the best players in C4. I love all the guards. Nas Sumpter is a firework and pretty lethal shooter in rhythm. Still have to play Western twice (their size will be the only team CHS has seen that can match them). 4D is a tough region. Handley, Glass, GW, Jefferson Forest. Orange played them tough. Still think this team is one of the best in C4. Would love to see them make a deep run.
