Not a huge game but I'm very interested in seeing how Henrico vs Hermitage goes. I can imagine HERM is pissed about the OS game and might be looking ahead to Varina and this is very much a measuring stick game for Henrico to see if they've made any progress.
Damn bro, I’m trippin. I saw this game and didn’t think to put it up. Henrico almost beat Herm last year and played Varina crazy tough. Henrico isn’t the Henrico of the past 5 years. They’re gonna be very solid.

Shenandoah District Teams Ready for Second Week of Non-District Action

Gap @ Luray- The new look offense for Gap did show the improvement they were looking for, but I think this could have also been a little of JR being down some too. Luray is still an enigma to me because they routinely have some hardnosed line play but sometimes do not have the skill guys to execute their portion. Tough loss to ER down the stretch but look for the visiting Bison to bring in a physical offense to test the Bulldogs resolve. This one is a tossup to me because I am still not sure which team shows up and imposes their will. I will go with the home team here and say the Bison move the ball, but Luray will break a pile of tackles to secure the win.

Alleghany @ Fort- The Fort loss to TA was about what I expected while missing a key piece of the run game. I would think that the outcome likely would not have changed but the margin and overall score for Fort probably would have. That said this game will show us a little more of what to expect from this Indians team. Alleghany travelled to Waynesboro and handled their business in convincing fashion last week. This one feels like a Fort win just based off of how they played TA and the hype around this group.

Tazewell @ Riverheads- Opening game for Tazewell and a tough travel day for a Friday night game. Riverheads defense did enough against a good Central team but this Tazewell team will have a much more reliable passing game than the Falcons last week. Lots of positives for the Gladiators with new faces in new places but this game should also tell us a little about how a pass heavy Fort team would match up also. That said the Gladiators win a close one and start rounding into shape for district play.

Rockbridge @ Staunton- I won't be nice here, RC is in disarray, and I am not sure what has happened to this school's football program. This should be a coast game for a Staunton team that has explosive play capability. Storm in overwhelming fashion

Surry County @ Draft- Draft proved me wrong with last weeks impressive win over KW. This tells me one of two things, either some tweaks on the offense scheme have gotten them what they wanted or KW isn't as strong as some have suggested in other threads. This game will not tell us about that and will be a name your score contest for the Cougars going away.

Waynesboro @ Monticello- Waynesboro has some tools in the shed but Monticello looked impressive against a good Fort team when they scrimmaged so this could be a long night for the visitors. Monticello by a decent margin

Wilson @ Turner Ashby- I see this as a decent game early with TA pouring it on late. Not sure of the depth that Wilson will have but TA can throw a second unit out that can get it done as well. I would love to go with Wilson here but the Knights are just too strong and will win comfortably

I need to eat my crow from last week so I will start with congrats to Gap on proving me wrong ( I am glad you did). But I stand by my comment of this team being undersized and needing to improve tackling, but there is plenty more season left to get that worked out.

I also need to have a plate for the Draft prediction. Sounds like this team is much more than the Graber brothers. Time will tell but this team generally has a solid defense to work with so watch out if they get the offense rolling as well.

Visible Religious Verses

I saw a HS football player who covered his lower back plate with athletic tape and wrote a religious verse on it. As an example, it said something like "John 3:16" or "Quran 1:25". Is this allowed?
There's nothing inherently illegal about writing a religious message on equipment, as long as the equipment is worn legally. Back pads are required to be covered by the jersey (not because of any messaging, but because it's only safe if it's flat to the back -- a back pad that's loose has been known to be at a right angle to the spine when the player hits the ground and cause significant injury).

Eye black cannot have any messaging and must be a single stroke or adhesive strip. By rule, towels cannot have writing on them. A player who writes religious messaging on his towel might be told to remove it, but that's not because the content is religious, it's because the rule stipulates that no written messages are allowed.

I have seen tape with religious messaging and, as long as the tape itself is legal, anything written on it is OK provided it's not profane or derogatory. For years the Case Book had a situation where a player had a t-shirt under his shoulder pads and jersey that had a profane message on it, visible when he lifted his jersey. This was illegal.

There is no prohibition on religious messaging or anything saying it's banned, so long as it does not degrade another faith. The equipment it's on must be legal.

The Rules Book looks at actions differently that passive messaging. Crossing yourself or dropping to a knee are actions and under different rules than wearing something with a written message. That said, there's still nothing saying that a religious display is forbidden, so long as it's not prolonged or used to draw attention to oneself.

Week 1 Thoughts for 1A

With GW dominating Radford and Glenvar easily handling Galax, that puts GW right there with Essex for Top 2 teams in the running for the State title.

Essex easily handled Sussex which I thought would have put up a better fight. Maybe being the 1st game under the new HC they have to work out some kinks but I was disappointed in their showing.

Speaking of disappointment, Honaker sure did let me down. Will they bounce back this week?

Patrick Henry going down to Virginia High wasn't on my bingo card now they face a Lebanon team thats feeling good about themselves after taking care of Honaker. They are staring 0-2 (possibly 0-3) right in the face.

Northumberland handled business but looked underwhelming in doing so, not sure they will be a factor this year but its still early and they can get that high powered offense running.

Did someone say high powered offense? Rappahannock 77-0 over Nandua sure did catch my attention. Maybe they can be the in runner up competition in Region A behind Essex

What are yall thoughts on Week 1 in Division 1A

Throw in PH @ Godwin. PH is a team we haven’t talked about much but they handled a pretty good Louisa team this past week. DEVIN ROOSE is a baller man. If they can beat Godwin and somehow win at least 2 games out of Herm, Glen Allen, Varina and Dale then watch out. Devin Roose makes PH a very very dangerous football team with him at QB.
