Unusual situation with Graham playoff game

Graham plays it's home games at Mitchell Stadium, just across the state line in Bluefield, WV and has their game scheduled for 7 o'clock on Friday. Some legal issues caused the WV playoffs to be delayed and now Bluefield, WV is scheduled to play at the same time (Friday night at 7 o clock). (Their opponent got to choose the day and time )... It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Perhaps Graham will have to play against V High at nearby Tazewell or Bluefield could end up playing at nearby Princeton, WV. Either that or somebody will have to play on Saturday. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Graham reserved the stadium first....but there will have to be a compromise. This was bound to happen sooner or later. This and the city of Bluefield, WV allowing Appomattox (nothing wrong with letting them practice, but not asking the host team was sort of a slap in the face) to practice at the stadium without informing the folks at Graham a few years back may be what finally drives Graham to build it's own stadium.

Refuse to let this game be disregarded like it isn’t the biggest game on Saturday afternoon in the state of Virginia. Two of the top 3 coaches in C4 going at for part 3. King George got their “get back” last year after losing in OT to the state champion Generals the previous year. Will the young KG defense be able to replicate last year’s gameplan and contain the high powered Dinwiddie offense? Will Dinwiddie’s secondary be up for the challenge to stop KG’s passing game? It’ll be a lot of athletes on the field on Saturday afternoon.

Thoughts on Region A

Rapp seems to be the team to beat, after watching a scouting both teams this year, Rapp and Essex both have talent, I do feel like Essex has regressed a bit this year and Rapp has taken the forefront of the district and Region. Essex has some good athletes but I think Rapp has a tougher more hard nosed group of kids. Seeing the #2 Madison for Rapp in person that kid has some game breaking speed and has a tough O line with good size with a pretty quick Qb in #1, they don't seem to run anything complex they just line it up and beat you and wear you down. Defensively theyre quick and get to the ball. My colleague tells me they will be the team to see Altavista in the state semi. From what I saw on film they look like mirror images of each other besides Altavista having a much larger runningback....they have Westmoreland for a 3rd time this year this week

Essex is good but Im not sure they have the pieces in place to get back to state this year and that's tough to say considering they returned a few All state, All region, All district guys. I know someone said that injuries plagued them this year but with their schedule they've shown their hand when going against Rapp and Westmoreland at full strength. From what I've heard from a few people other than #1 theqb for Essex who was out early in the season but has been back no one else has had significant injuries they've just been "sore". They have a few good running backs with #2 Holmes for them being similar in size to Madison for Rapp but I think Madison runs harder. They also have a good size kid #6 who i was shocked to learn hes a freshman. Looks about 6'2 and at least 215 he had some good runs and then after that seems to be runners by committee. The qb was out with what I talked about being one of those "sore" injuries but I dont think hes been as much a factor as he was last year. The O line has size but is inconsistent the defense looked okay but there are some holes and arent nearly as good as last years unit...they have Middlesex this week... whats your thoughts on Region A..whats the outlook on the other regions

State Runs through Altavista

Anything can happen any giving night but i don't see anybody beating Altavista this year . It's def one of the the strongest teams they have had in years . There oline is very strong up front very senior heavy with the Best RB in the State. Their defense is playing lights out flying around to the ball. Mixed in with all of that some series speed that can hurt you. Only Team i see giving them a good game is Essex and i think altavista is 14 points better then them. Just my opinion only but I really think it's Altavista to lose this year .

Few Surprises in Class 2, Thoughts and Predictions

Region A. As expected, it looks like King William regardless of it's seed, will be one of the last 2 standing along with Poquoson, unless Poquoson get's upset at home by Lunenburg and KW loses at Bruton, but KW is the favs to win that game, so after all has shaken out, very likely the final 2 most fans probably expected from early on will be the two that meet again. Can't count out Bruton and Central yet though.

Region B. As expected from early on, most fans knew it would probably be up in the air with several teams having a shot to win the Region as Central Woodstock's coach retired and Riverheads lost Triple C. It turns out, it's up in the air and that theme still holds. Clarke County going 10-0 and then losing in round one is a surprise, but again the diversity and depth of this region holds true with MC's win. I think Buckingham, Riverheads, and Strasburg (any of these 3) making it to the region title game is no surprise. If Madison County pulls off a win at BC next week and makes it to the Region Title Game, that would be considered a surprise when looking simply at the numbers with MC being the 8th seed. But again, when you look at MC's quality of play on the field and potential, it's not a huge surprise.

Region C. Much like Region A, few to any surprises. Glenvar was expected to be the team to beat and they are the one seed and many thought they would be hosting Appo in game 2 of the playoffs, but Floyd beat Appo close. Most fans knew Appo would be down a bit this year. Radford, I thought would end up the 3 seed behind Gretna to start the season, but most figured it would be Gretna and Radford as the 2 and 3 seeds and us two teams meeting in game 2 of the playoffs and we are. It's just at Radford instead of Gretna and it figures to be a close game as expected. Most give Floyd little chance to win at Glenvar. No major surprises in Region C this year. Appo was down a bit more than I thought they would be and Gretna is not quite as strong as I thought they would be, but no major surprises.

Region D. Most figured Graham, Union, Ridgeview and this has held true, but Va High is the oddball. We (Radford) beat Va High early on in the season and over the last 4 or 5 weeks, Va High doesn't even look like the same football team. If any surprises in Region D, it would be Va High, especially if they could win in Bluefield at Graham (tall task-both literally and figuratively).

Predictions.
Region A. Poquoson and KW both win next week setting up another great game between two heavyweights in the Region A Title Game.

Region B. I think Buckingham County playing at home wins very close and gets the monkey off it's back for good with early playoff exits and plays for the Region Title against Riverheads who I think will beat Strasburg. Everything tells me to pick Strasburg who I think is the more complete team, but picking against Riverheads in the playoffs within the region is never a good choice. Riverheads finds a way to rise to the occasion and we saw it again with Stuarts Draft last night when it mattered most. Both MC and Strasburg can win and no surprise if they do. Even the matchup with Strasburg's ability to throw the football favors them over Riverheads and playing at home, but I'm picking Riverheads. If Strasburg wins this game, it will be a game where Strasburg wins by 10 points or more. If it's close, Riverheads isn't losing. If Strasburg wins, it will be a game where they are wide open on offense and the football is in the air a lot and they beat Riverheads by 14 or so points with over 150 passing yards (this is very possible and many or most would probably predict Strasburg to win and I don't blame them).

Region C. Glenvar and Radford both win next week setting up a region title game between 2 rivals. I picked Gretna to be in the Region C Title Game preseason based on what Radford lost and what Gretna returned and I would pick Gretna to win this game next weekend over Radford, if it were at Gretna. Playing at home, I think we beat Gretna in a very close game. No surprise if the Hawks win though.

Region D. I'm picking Graham and Union. Both teams can lose on their home fields. Ridgeview is good enough to win at Union and Va High is playing good enough to win at Graham, but both will need to be perfect and both will need Graham and Union to have major penalties and boneheaded plays and a few turnovers. Union and Graham as talented as both are, can pull this off and self destruct with penalties in a hurry, but I don't think it will be enough for Ridgeview and Va High playing on the road and now it's cold in the mountains. Very cold, and that usually favors physicality and Graham and Union are brutally physical and in my opinion, the most physical two teams in Class 2.

8/25/22

It was a warm afternoon. GW and The Spartans hooked up in Martinsville. JV football. I did some things I regret and have gotten treatment. Tie game 20-20. I hopped the fence to confront the white hat about why we couldn’t play overtime. He was a RCPS employee. I shot a blast double and rained down elbows until the fat umpire pulled me off. I yelled “You are a rookie, bro “ That is basically what I remember. As Paul Harvey would say “And that’s the rest of the story “

Lady Indians Headed to State Title Game

I see that no one else has addressed this yet so I will give a brief report. (REALLY brief by my standards, mainly because I don't speak volleyball language.)

The Indians traveled to Clarke County tonight and won in five sets in the state semi-finals. Clarke had won the Region 2-B title last week by beating Fort in three sets on the Indians' home court. Each team then posted a state quarter-final win over the weekend. In Fort's case, that was also a five-set win. I believe it was over Bruton but don't quote me on that.

Anyway, tonight the hometown Eagles won the first and third sets, which put the Indians in come-from-behind mode. They pulled out a win in a fairly close fourth set. I think it was something like 25-21.

In the deciding set, the teams were tied at every point from 1-5, before the Indians broke in front for good and gave themselves some breathing room. They moved out to an 11-6 lead before Clarke fought back to close to within 12-10, but the Indians were then able to put it away with a 15-11 win.

Fort will now advance to the state finals Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center. I believe I have read that will be at 2:30. I assume that their opponent was also determined this evening and that will be whatever team survived out of Regions C and D.

As for Clarke, tonight was their second bitter loss in front of the home fans, as their football team lost a shocker Friday night to Madison County, although they entered that game unbeaten and seeded number one in the region. Just like with the girls, Clarke had beaten Madison on the road the week before, only to fall short at home.

So congrats to the Lady Indians and best wishes for Saturday. It is always exciting when a county team brings home a state title in any sport.
