Riverheads Sets Record in Rout of Mountain View

Since it was pouring outside tonight, it only stood to reason that the Gladiators "rained down" three pointers, 15 of them to be exact, as RHS evened its record at 5-5 with a 69-42 dismantling of the visiting Generals. That total sets a new record for Riverheads, and in case you are thinking "haven't I heard this story before?" the Gladiators had already set a new mark for themselves a few games ago when they hit 14 in a game out at Bath County. After tonight's new record, I have them unofficially averaging 9.5 made triples per game.

The most amazing thing about tonight's game was the TOTAL team effort involved, not only in the win, but in the setting of that record. For the second game in a row, all nine players scored, with each one scoring at least four points tonight. As for the 15 three-pointers, seven of the nine hit at least one, and even the two guys that didn't hit any still had several attempts as the Gladiators ran a clinic tonight in making the extra pass and finding the open man on the perimeter.

The outcome was never in doubt as RHS scored the first 10 points of the game and held MV scoreless until the 3 minute mark of the first quarter. With Will Gardner hitting the first two triples and Aden Slack adding two quick inside buckets, the Gladiators went on to take a 15-4 lead after one.

Knowing that Wilson comes to Greenville tomorrow night, Coach Weller then started to substitute frequently and a pair of sophomores, Henley Dunlap and Jackson Brammer, combined forces to score the majority of the Big Red's second quarter points and to no great surprise, each of them hit a triple, as the teams went to the locker rooms with RHS in front 27-13.

To further illustrate the total team effort, the second half belonged to a pair of senior starters, Carter Mooneyham and Gabe Milo. Each had been held scoreless in the first half, but found the range in the second and finished with 12 and 9 points respectively.

The third quarter ended with RHS ahead 47-28 and at that point, they had only hit nine threes, so the Bath County record of 14 seemed safe. But the shots kept falling for the Big Red. Chris Brooks became the seventh guy to hit from behind the arc, and when Gardner dropped in his fifth of the evening, that set the new mark. In addition to his five, Mooneyham had 3, Milo and Bennett Dunlap had two each, and Brooks, Brammer and Henley Dunlap had one each.

So the Big Red's third straight victory is in the books and as mentioned above, Wilson comes to town tomorrow night for what should be a very interesting county rivalry clash. The questions to be answered will be: Have the Gladiators developed enough confidence that they can take down the Hornets who have arguably the Shenandoah's best player in Finn Irving? Will the Hornets be "mad as one" after losing at Fort Defiance Tuesday night? Will the Green and Gold perhaps have an advantage by being better rested or will the Gladiators still be raring to go after tonight's performance?

Why not come on out to Greenville tomorrow night and see for yourself? Or watch on NFHS assuming the game will be carried. I will of course have a report for you tomorrow night. One thing is for sure........the Shenandoah race is tight already and we are barely one-third through the schedule. With Waynesboro stunning Buffalo Gap Tuesday night in double overtime, each team in the league has now won at least one district game and no one is undefeated in district play. So it is literally anybody's game at this point.

In tonight's JV game, the Big Red entered play with a 6-2 record as compared to the MV juniors who were winless like their varsity team. To the Generals' credit they were a spunky bunch and Riverheads needed the better part of three quarters to assume control before they pulled away to a 48-28 win. Just like the varsity game, the coaches subbed frequently, knowing that Wilson tomorrow night will be a different animal.

Gladiators Pick Up Second Straight Road Win

Riverheads made its first-ever trip to Liberty Bedford for any sport to the best of my knowledge, since they are 70 miles away and Class 3-A, and the trip proved successful as the Big Red swept both the JV (44-35) and Varsity (58-50) games. The two games were actually somewhat similar in that play was a little ragged and VERY closely called by the officials. Also in both cases, Riverheads held a narrow lead at the half but took advantage of a big third quarter to establish a working margin and then held on for the win.

The JV game seemed especially tight in terms of the officiating as both teams were on the double bonus in the first half, and remember JVs only play 7 minute quarters. However I have no complaints about the refs as they were consistent in both games.

I can also compliment the atmosphere at the game. Liberty had a very lively pep band which added a lot to the evening. Their cheerleaders were also a festive bunch but I have to admit I have never seen a game where the home cheerleaders were not only on the visitors' side but were right in the middle of the visiting bleachers as opposed to down front or on the side. I am sure they had their reasons and it was not really that much of a distraction, but it did seem odd.

In the varsity game, the teams were very evenly matched in terms of not having a strong inside presence and therefore each relied on guard play and pressure defense, which of course led to the abundance of fouls. With only 10 guys dressed out for the Minutemen and 9 for RHS, there were dangers of a foul out but to the best of my recollection, only one Liberty player reached the limit.

The first quarter, although fast paced, featured very little scoring as Liberty led 8-7. You could tell that the Gladiators were working very hard to establish a three point game, since they average in double digits and had hit 12 (or was it 13.?........I will come back to that shortly) in Friday's upset win at Fort Defiance.

But in that first quarter, only one fell for the Big Red. Things picked up a little bit and eventually four different guys hit from behind the arc for a total of seven triples. A little below their average but Coach Weller will take that any day as long as a victory comes with it.

Coach also had to be very pleased with tonight's balanced offense. Bennett Dunlap led the way with 12 points, including two of the triples. He was the only player in double figures for RHS but all nine guys dented the scoring column and five of them scored between 6 and 9 points. Worthy of special mention were the steady floor games of Aden Slack and Jackson Brammer. Neither is likely to ever lead the Big Red in scoring in any game, but Slack is a strong rebounder and does a lot of the little things that do not show up in the box score, and Brammer is one of the steadiest guys on the team and never seems to get rattled.

The victory gives RHS a 4-5 overall record and when Mountain View comes to town on Thursday, they can even their slate heading into the second half of the season. By the way, tonight's game was a make-up you might say and was scheduled due to the teams having to miss out on the chance to compete in the Dec. 22-23 Riverheads Holiday Tournament. Weather canceled that event but RHS worked out home-and-home series with both Mountain View and Liberty. The Minutemen will visit Riverheads on Saturday night the 21st.

In closing, let me explain my comment above about the Fort Defiance game. As I had mentioned in that recap, Henley Dunlap's game winner appeared to be a three-pointer in real time but yet the game went to record as a 47-45 Riverheads win.

However the Harrisonburg paper has since covered the game and they called it a three and reported the score as 48-45. So tonight I asked our AD about it. He had a bird's eye view of the play that night and he says that Dunlap was a foot and a half behind the line and therefore it should have been called a three. So I guess the final word was that it was a two pointer, so let's just hope that Mr. Dunlap, who is only a sophomore, does not find himself flirting with the 1,000 point mark a couple of years down the road. Or let's hope he easily exceeds it so that the point or lack thereof doesn't matter.

Steward School defeats Norfolk Collegiate 63-48

Senior guard Te'Ven Smith scored 22 points and junior center Owen Gray added 16 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Steward School past Norfolk Collegiate by a final score of 63-48 win. The Spartans, who were recently ranked #4 in the 1st VISAA Basketball poll, led the entire game from the opening tip.

Smith scored the Spartans 1st seven points and finished the half with 15 points (including a three) as the Steward School led 29-19 at the break. Gray (6-foot-10) was dominant inside and he had 10 points and 11 rebounds before halftime.

An 8-0 run to start the second half increased the Spartans lead to to 37-19 early in the 3rd quarter. Gray picked up his 4th foul but Norfolk Collegiate was not able to cut into the lead.
