The Dinwiddie community came out in force for homecoming Friday night. On the heels of the tragic accident in the science lab that occurred this past week, we all needed to come together and show support. Our Principal, Robbie Garnes had appropriate comments and led the crowd in a moment of silence. Incidently, all of the injured are making good progress. The Homecoming Court presentation went well, and we almost, and I mean almost, had a big win in the Loyalty Automotive sponsored halftime field goal try. If the kick attempt is good, AND stays in the back of the Toyota pickup parked behind the goal post, a large prize is awarded. Not only was the kick good, but it landed in the bed of the truck, and bounced twice before it bounced out. Between what was won on this event, plus a $100 donation per touchdown scored by Dinwiddie, Loyalty provided Dinwiddie with a very nice donation. For which we say, thank you.

By the way, the food we provided for the “workers“ and other guest, as Guy Fieri would say, was off the chain! The best beef brisket any of us have ever eaten, and BBQ that was equally good. We are blessed here in Dinwiddie with a fellow, (who happens to live across the road from me), that is legendary for his cooking. He has been anointed as the official chef for our gang at the football games. This is why I always encourage you friends of ours here on Virginia Preps to stop by behind the press booth and say hi and try a bite of our hospitality.

The football game was actually very exciting. You may laugh at that comment because the final score was 41-0, but it was only 14-0 at the half. Make no mistake, Petersburg is a fast, athletic team. They may be someone’s worst nightmare come playoff time. A few too many ill timed mistakes early kept them from scoring in the first half. The second half was a bit of a different story as Dinwiddie made several adjustments and the Generals depth and conditioning began to show.

Bleeding Navy did some preliminary calculations and it now appears that the top three in order in 4-B are Dinwiddie (29.142), Varina (28.857), and King George (26.666). I caution everyone, this is a preliminary, late night calculation, so errors are likely!

One final comment on the Friday night festivities. Since it was homecoming, quite a number of former classes set up tents and did tailgating that would do any college fans proud. There was probably enough delicious food out there, that everyone in attendance could have filled up three times over. My apologies to the band boosters, that run the concession stand. I’m sure sales were a quite a bit down.

Perfect weather, a standing room only crowd, great camaraderie, and a victory on the field. It was truly a great night.

The Phantoms get the scoring started with QB Nolan James, their dual-threat signal caller who transferred in from Nansemond River before the season and has been rock solid throughout this 2022 campaign.

After a disappointing showing last week in our 21-0 win against Hampton we turned it up for the naysayers.

Luray had a rough night. East Rock played a complete game and defeated the Bulldogs. Prayers to #11 the Luray qb and I believe Kenny Frye from Luray as well. Both injured in the 2nd half and did not return. Big game in Luray next week as Strasburg comes to town at 6-1 and Luray at 6-1.

Maybe the worst officiated game I have seen, this season.

Was down 30-14 in the 3rd and came back and got the win on the road.

My gut tells me that this is not your typical world beating OS team. Solid and capable, yes, but not leaps and bounds better than all comers like they usually are.

From what little I’ve seen about KF, this is their best team ever.

I like KF by 10. I think home field advantage will help, but I just think they are the better team.

One team for Rider Points had their game postponed until Monday, so that could change Buckingham afterwards

Game was called with 3 mins left in 3rd qtr. Appo 34, Nelson 6. Please pray for the Nelson player that was injured with possible concussion and taken offf the field by stretcher.

For the second week in a row, Riverheads posted a three-touchdown win over a long-time county rival, but also for the second week, the game was closer than the score indicates and the opponent left the field knowing they had done all they could do to knock off the Big Red. Each team threw a curve at the other one tonight, or so it seemed, but in the final analysis the Riverheads curve worked better than the Wilson one.

The RHS curve in question was an apparently deliberate decision to minimize the impact of all-state running back Cayden Cook-Cash, who only scored once in the game and that was late in the fourth quarter when the game was pretty much decided. Instead the Gladiators threw a heavy dose of Luke Bryant at the Hornets, daring them to stop the strong senior running back and they were completely unable to do so as he scored four touchdowns to pace the victory.

As for Wilson's unexpected contribution, their fans may not have been surprised, but the Gladiators certainly were by the Hornets' stronger-than-advertised passing attack, which was the major factor that kept them in the game. According to the radio recap, quarterback Aiden Podgorski was 22-33 for 239 yards, including two impressive TD strikes to his senior classmate Blake Rodgers.

RHS fans, or at least most of us, were instead expecting a three-prong rushing attack from the Hornets but based on the times we heard their names called, only Ryan Mundie seemed to have his regular workhorse type game. The emphasis on the passing game pretty much became necessary after Bryant went wild in the second quarter and scored three times to pace the Gladiators to a 27-7 halftime lead. Each team then scored once in each of the final quarters.

Bennett Dunlap, who ran the ball from his QB spot more tonight than usual, put RHS on the board first with a 12 yard run just a 1:16 into the contest. His score was set up by a broken play from Bryant in which he appeared at first to bobble the handoff but instead took it down the Wilson sideline for about a 30 yard gain to immediately put RHS into the red zone. Dunlap then scored a play or two later.

Wilson answered on its initial possession to tie the score at 7-7 at the end of the first period. However, the Hornets stopped Riverheads on its second possession and had a chance to take the lead but could not produce the go-ahead score that would have no doubt unnerved the large Homecoming crowd.

Following that missed Wilson opportunity, the rest of the first half was practically dominated by Bryant. He had two long runs in which he utilized his blockers beautifully to gain maximum yardage and on one of them simply sidestepped a would-be tackler. By the time he completed his one-man show, the Gladiators were up 27-7 with just a couple minutes left, but there was still some first half drama left.

Although Wilson was out of time outs they executed a very nice two-minute drill and moved the ball down as close as the 7 yard line as the clock inched closer to halftime. On the final play of the half, the Gladiator defense broke through and sacked Podgorski for a loss.

However a flag had been thrown on the play, which both confused and infuriated the fans on the home side. For a moment, it appeared that the sack was going to be for naught and that Wilson would get an untimed down with another chance to score. Then for another moment, it appeared that both teams had been flagged. Instead the final ruling, which we did not learn about until the second half kickoff, was that Riverheads was called for a dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct, which was assessed to start the second half.

That allowed Wilson to start the half with a short field, and they scored on the first of Rodgers' two highlight-reel catches. That made the score 27-14 and made fans on both sides go "hmmm if they had also scored to end the first half, it would be 27-21 now."

Instead, Bryant scored a fourth time in the third quarter to counter the Rodgers TD, and then after Wilson trimmed it one last time to 34-21 on Rodgers' second TD catch, Triple C finally broke loose for about a 40 yard romp to close out the scoring. Before either team scored its fourth quarter TD, each one coughed up the football for what I believe were the only two turnovers of the game.

Riverheads will hit the road the next two Fridays, to Fort Defiance and then Staunton. Those two will certainly be interesting, especially after the Indians had unbeaten Staunton on the ropes tonight before The Storm somehow pulled out a 14-12 win in the final minute. Wilson, which only suffered its first district loss tonight, will now travel to Stuarts Draft to face the Cougars who are also only a one-loss-in-district play team after rallying past Buffalo Gap.

To summarize, RHS and Staunton are each unbeaten in district play, Wilson and Draft have one loss each and are still in contention for the title, whereas two-loss Buffalo Gap and Fort Defiance have to be considered out of the race but either or both can still play the role of spoiler somewhere along the line.

Last but not least, Waynesboro finally got in the win column, knocking off Rockbridge. I believe that final was something like 24-7 and I heard something about the Giants converting a string of onside kicks in that one.

Congratulations to SPL311U for winning this week's Pick'em! His faith in his home team, Madison, paid off with a big win over Centreville to get the win.

Before I get the question, we had one game this week that hit the spread exactly, South County (-7) vs West Springfield. This rarely happens and we have had hundreds of games over the years for this contest. The rule I follow is that any game that hits the spread exactly is a tie and does not count. This is the same rule followed as if you were wagering which is that the favored team must beat the spread.

Greetings from Suffolk, VA on this Friday, October 14, 2022 evening where the temperatures is quite pleasant as the King's Fork Bulldogs (6-0) host the reigning two-time Class 6 State Champion Oscar Smith Tigers (5-0).

Oscar Smith (5-0) at King's Fork (6-0) . . . This has been one of the more anticipated games on the state docket since the schedule was made. Back in 2017, King’s Fork outlasted Oscar Smith 29-23 in a thriller where QB Justin German threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns – the eventual game-winner coming with 1:14 to play when he found receiver Cherrod Joe for a 53-yard strike on fourth-and-10. That answered Oscar Smith going ahead on a 56-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-11 earlier in the quarter.

Certainly, the cast of characters have changed from that game, but there are some juicy storylines. King’s Fork Head Coach Anthony Joffrion was a Bulldogs assistant the last time the Suffolk school hosted and beat the Tigers. Furthermore, he played for current Oscar Smith Head Coach Chris Scott at Ocean Lakes. He was an assistant of Scott’s with the Tigers as well. Thus far, King’s Fork is averaging 40.8 points per game and allowing just 6.8 PPG.

Scott’s Tigers – the reigning two-time Class 6 State Champions – have won 16 games in a row and 31 straight over Southeastern District opponents. They needed to rally from a 17-0 deficit in the second period to beat Indian River, 19-17, just two weeks ago. That less than stellar performance aside, the Tigers are putting up 48.2 points per game and allowing just 10.2 PPG.

Oscar Smith has alternated quarterbacks this year between Cade Cox (611 yards, 8-1 TD/Int. ratio) and Parker Lancaster (406 yards, 6-1 TD/Int. ratio). There are weapons for both with the speedy Jamauri ‘Bam’ Knox (23Rec. 421Yds. 3 TD’s), Xavier Lewis and West Virginia commit Tory Johnson Jr. (13Rec. 260Yds. 5 TD’s). As important as the passing game, getting the ground game with Isaac Huffman on track is essential against a King’s Fork defense that rallies to the ball well collectively, led by All-State DB Antione Gray, Latavion Wynn (5 sacks), Ronald Rhodes and Malachi Nixon. That group held Western Branch to 57 total yards of offense in a win last month.

The Tigers have to be able to slow down a King’s Fork offense that can strike in a bunch of different ways, headed up by dual-threat QB Cameron Butler (1251 total yards, 17 TD’s), RB JaVon Ford (8 TD’s rushing) and WR Kaletri Boyd, arguably the most dynamic player on the field. On the year, Boyd had 10 TD’s and that included a 94-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter of their 35-14 win over Deep Creek along with an 80-yard touchdown catch. Getting takeaways will be important for the Oscar Smith defense and DB Damon ‘D.J.’ Etheridge has 5 INT’s the past two weeks, one of which he returned for a score against Great Bridge. Edge rusher Jerrod Wilson (5 sacks) also is going to be looking to cause havoc like he did when he created the go-ahead score on a strip-sack at Indian River.

We’ll really find out if Oscar Smith’s offense is still trying to figure some things out or not in this spot because King’s Fork comes into this one oozing with confidence, similar to five years ago when they snapped the Tigers SED streak. Keeping composure and not having a myriad of penalties, which plagued them a season ago in this matchup, will be huge. In close games, the Tigers know how to finish and they should not be fazed at all by the atmosphere or crowd if it goes down to the wire.
