Lake Braddock 9 - Westfield 7

This game saw the defenses of both teams step up repeatedly. Mixed in with some offensive mistakes by both teams, this combined to make the game a low scoring affair.

Westfield received the ball first at their own 26 yard line and moved into Lake Braddock territory before WF's Jenks was picked off by LB (I could hardly see the numbers on the LB jerseys-dark gold outlined numbers that were the same color as their dark jerseys made it next to impossible). LB take over on their 34 yard line and moved to the WF 35 yard line but faced a 4th and 6. LB's Porter completed the pass to Austin at the WF 28 and LB was still alive. After losing three yards on the next three plays, LB faced another 4th down, 4th and 13, and Porter's pass attempt fell incomplete. WF took over on their own 31 yard line but a hold negated a first down run and WF ended up punting from their own 18 yard line. After a WF penalty on the return, LB had great position on the WF 37 yard line. LB again failed to gain yards and another 4th down pass fell incomplete. WF's next drive ended in another turnover, this time a Murphy fumble recovered by LB's Weiss at the WF 49 yard line. True to how the game was going, LB soon faced another 4th down but this time Porter found his receiver for a 10 yard gain to the WF 35 yard line. After losing 10 yards, LB punted from their own 45 yard line and the ball went into the end zone. WF then went three and out to give LB the ball at midfield. LB again drove fairly deep into WF territory before stalling at the WF 12 yard line. Brown's 27 yard FG attempt was blocked by WF's Lucas and the game remained scoreless with 2:12 remaining in the first half. WF, starting deep in their own territory after the blocked kick, managed to gain about 25 yards before LB's R. Matheny got a great break on the ball at the LB 35 yard line to give WF's Jenks his second INT of the game. LB now had the ball at the WF 47 and not much time to work, but Porter found Austin for a 25 yard gain to the WF 22 yard line before an intentional grounding and an incomplete pass saw LB pushed back to the WF 39 yard line. Porter again found Austin and LB advanced to the WF 15 with three seconds on the clock. LB's Brown then kicked a 31 yard FG as time expired and LB had a 3-0 lead.

LB took the second half KO at their 35 yard line when the ball went out of bounds at the LB two yard line. On this drive Porter and Weiss connected for a 38 yard pass to near midfield, soon followed by a 20 yard passing TD from Porter (I did not get the receiver's number). After a bad snap on the XP the score was 9-0, LB, with 9:38 remaining in the third quarter. WF started their drive on their own 35 yard line and reached the LB 30 yard line where a Jenks run on 4th and 1 came up short to give LB the ball. LB reached midfield but punted; on the punt WF fumbled the catch and a LB player recovered the ball on the WF 27 yard line. LB failed to capitalize again and the punt went into the end zone to give WF the ball on their own 20 yard line. On this drive WF finally started clicking and went 80 yards, scoring on a 34 yard Jenks to Morin pass to cut the lead to 9-7 (Nicklas XP) with 8:24 remaining in the game. LB took over and went to a ball control, clock eating game mixed in with some timely passes. Reaching the WF 25 yard line, Porter was sacked on third down at the WF 37 yard line and LB elected to punt. A bad snap resulted in the punter falling on the ball at the WF 48 yard line and WF had about 3-1/2 minutes to get within field goal range. WF successfully moved the ball with short passes and several short Jenks runs, but once WF reached the LB 27 yard line they faced third and four. LB stopped the run for a two yard loss and WF now faced 4th and 6 at the LB 29 yard line. WF elected to try for a first down instead of a long FG attempt, and the LB defense got to Jenks as he tried to scramble up the middle when the pocket broke down. With about 1:35 left LB went into victory formation and ran out the clock for a 9-7 win.

Woodside Wolverines vs Phoebus Phantoms

Phoebus, the 2-time D3 & 7-time D5 champs have some efficiency problems on offense. Meaning that they make way too many mistakes when they have the ball. If they are going to win their first D4 title simply depending on their excellent special teams and that aggressive and swarming defense will be problematic against top tier talent like the Foxes, Generals or Spartans. Teams like those don't normally make multiple mistakes late in the season. The Phantoms must know they have the biggest of targets on their backs. Because they are a program of excellence, even the lowest expectation is that any sloppiness cannot be a part of their game. Their defense is mean and scary and should be declared a national health hazard. It's 34-0 at the half. 2 touchdowns came via Phoebus special teams and defense as usual. The game was called.
