NFL Fining a Player for Missed Call

I know we should stick to high school sports on here, but I just read something that I think is ridiculous and casts a bad light on football in general. So I would be curious to hear what others think.

In last week's Washington Commanders' victory over Philadelphia, a Washington player grabbed a face mask late in the game that caused a turnover and ultimately led to a score. However the refs missed it and did not flag the guy for the face mask.

Well here we are almost a week later and I just read that the NFL has fined that player over $10,000 for grabbing the face mask. So what do we think of that?

If the refs are supposed to be in charge of the game, should the NFL have that kind of after-the-fact authority? If so, then where do you draw the line? Are other players and coaches going to start demanding fines for every other thing that they think the refs missed? I always thought that refs were supposed to be in charge and that their decisions were final, no matter how wrong some of them might seem to be.

Yes, I know we have had players fined for fighting and even for unrelated off the field behavior, but aren't we opening up a can of worms if the NFL is going to start analyzing every single play and doing its own refereeing? Can you imagine the chaos it would cause if the NCAA or our very own VHSL started doing this kind of policing of the game?

Please understand that my beef is not with the player in question or who won the game or who is the better team. I just think it is wrong that the NFL would take this step over one isolated play when there have been plenty of blown calls over the years that impacted games. Let the refs do the best they can and accept the fact that they are going to miss some things.

Landon Wilson, Louisa

I saw his post on Facebook after the game with Salem. What an amazing young man of great character and a great testimony. I wanted to share the text of his post with you.

[Thank you Louisa. I will never ever forget these past 4 years. I finished my career with a record of 36-5 and 4 Jefferson District Championships. I will also never forget the amount of love and support I received from the community and program💚💛

Most importantly, this team grew closer to Jesus. Each week coach Alston held chapel before the game which brought kids on the team to christ on a weekly basis. After each game we prayed on the 50 yard line giving glory to god win or loss. There on the 50, players from other teams were also greatly impacted and started coming to Christ. On top of that, we’d attend each other’s churches. We may not have came out with a state championship like we wanted, but most importantly many of us came out with a LIFELONG win by receiving Jesus and I believe that is bigger than football. Knowing that this team made a huge impact off the field makes me happier than the 11 wins ever did.]

Coaches recently gathered to select the 2022 All-Beach District Football Teams.

Named as Offensive Player of the Year is Green Run senior quarterback Kevin White Jr.

Transferring to the Stallions from Menchville High in Newport News before the 2022 campaign, White put forth a spectacular regular season in which he threw for 2483 yards and 36 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions as Green Run ran through the Beach District unblemished for the second year in a row.

White followed up completing 14 of 17 passes for 417 yards and five touchdowns in the regional quarterfinals vs. Hickory by accounting for all three scores - two passing and one rushing - in a 21-13 regional semifinal triumph over Salem.

Earning Defensive Player of the Year honors was Cox senior defensive back Jordin Cooper, a playmaker in every facet for a Falcons team that went 9-3 overall and reached the Region 5A semifinals.

Cooper rushed 57 times for 266 yards and 8 TD's to go with a team-high 48 catches for 592 yards and 9 TD's. Defensively, he was in on 34 total tackles, six interceptions - two of which he returned for touchdowns - four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He also had 273 yards on kick/punt returns.

Chosen as Beach District Coach of the Year was Green Run's Brandon Williams, who has the Stallions on the cusp of a second straight Region 5A Championship.

The Stallions, who went 13-1 overall a season ago, are off to a 12-0 start in which they've outscored opponents 567-100, an average of 47-8 per contest.
