Former Blacksburg Asst. Coach Dies Tragically

Former Blacksburg offensive line coach Brad Deemer died yesterday in a car accident in Tazewell County. He was driving to Richlands to watch his former boss, Thad Wells, in Thad’s first game as Richlands’ head coach following the departure of long-time, highly successful Richlands head coach...

Blacksburg radio announcer to move to Chancellor

Thank you, Mike. You’re a class act, as are the overwhelming majority of Salem HS fans. I will miss Blacksburg more than words can describe. A very big part of me will always reside there. I’ll miss my broadcast partner Brad Epperley tremendously, too! That said, I’m very grateful that...

Condolences to the Callahan family and the Cougar family

Dan was a good friend and always had a quip or a comment that brought smiles to our faces. He was THE DEAN of SW Virginia HS football broadcasters. I always enjoyed talking with him during the off-seasons and interacting with him before and after Pulaski/Blacksburg games. He is and will...

Blacksburg/Salem game on Blacksburg's YouTube channel

Thanks, Mike. We missed you. We tried to find a van to come to Salem, pick you up and bring you back, but we couldn’t quite swing it. Best wishes to your Spartans the rest of the way, although if things stand as they are in the first set of rankings there might be a Salem-Blacksburg 2.0 in...

    Salem 28. Blacksburg 14. Half

Congratulations to the Spartans coaches, players and fans on a well played game. That was a fundamentally sound and very well coached team that visited Blacksburg tonight. I got to talk with Coach Holter before the game tonight - a class act. For the Spartans fans that were worried about your...

    River Ridge District

Blacksburg typically plays eight (8) players both ways - Goforth, Mitchell, Gholston, Collins, Mohamid, Mathena, Hairston and Early. Even leading tackler Parker Epperley (Linebacker) often gets plenty of offensive snaps in a game. I don’t think the Bruins could get much more two-way than the...

    Seen enough

Why was Persinger out Friday night? I’m surmising (perhaps incorrectly) from comments in this thread that it was not injury-related?

    It’s Giles vs Narrows Week

Hmmm. I don’t think we’ve heard “put you to sleep” before. We’ll try to be a little more energetic on the air. Thank you for the feedback,. We’re always open to critiques and comments.

Early 4a west rankings. My opinion

The reasons Blacksburg was out-yarded by Amherst last week were: (1) a 71-yd Amherst catch-and-run TD late in the game, and yards racked up late against the Bruins’ second and third string defenses late in the game, and (2) Blacksburg had 210 yards in kick-off returns, which meant the offense...

    Seen enough

Looking forward to another terrific Blacksburg-Salem battle Thursday night. The Bruins-Spartans games are becoming “must see” HS football games in SWVA every year. I’ll try to jump down from the booth to say Hi again, Mike, if I can. The pre-game coach’s interview goes about 10 minutes and is...

    Blacksburg vs Glenvar?

14-6 Blacksburg. Varsity played the first half, JVs the second half. Blacksburg had a JV player break a led with about 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter; had to be brought off the field on a stretcher. Play was stopped for several minutes. It put a big damper on the night.
