With their schedule, West Point could very well be 9-1 and 10-0 wouldn't even surprise me. They won't however from what I understand have the Porter kid, who was a stud as a freshman playing for them this year. Don't know much on Northumberland but looking at their schedule, I'd say probably 7-3 at best but no worse than 6-4. I do think you are spot on with W&L. Return a talented qb and with Joe Taylor now as head coach and them back in 1A, I look for them to be successful. The Essex game late in the season could potentially be a battle of 9-0 teams coming in. Of course a lot of football to be played between now and then.

Went ahead and ran through the rest of 1A. Personally, I will say I think the 4 regions is going to add some excitement to the end of the regular season. IF it is top 8 across the board, a lot of teams are still going to be playing for .500 to squeeze in the last couple weeks. Nobody is going to be out of the running very early.

On a side note, it will be interesting to see if Region B goes with 6 teams or 4 teams. If they do 6, everyone will get in... Definitely going to be an interesting situation.

This started out as a Region A review and I'm going to narrow it to the Northern Neck District.
1. Essex. Should be very strong. Like it has been mentioned before if they get the QB spot figured out they are going to be trouble with so many talented skill kids, including a few no one has heard about.
2. W&L. The Eagles talent level has dropped the last couple years but I'm sure Joe Taylor will get things going in the right direction. His biggest task will be getting a qualified staff together. Some of those assistant coaches looked lost the last couple years. Plus if I'm not mistaken a new athletic facility is in the offing with the new school site being unveiled.
3. Northumberland. They've got a talented one in the Palmer kid. Will be interesting to see how these kids take to the new coach who is only a few years out of high school himself. Will it be Yes, Coach or Yes, Aaron?
4. Toss up between CB, Lan and Rapp. CB lost some significant pieces and and I'm certain about Lan but I think their top ground gainer returns. It can only get better for Rapp after 1-9 last year. CB and Lancaster have new coaches.

This has to be your lowestpoint.

This has to be your lowestpoint.

You know, I'll concede the Region D is off. I assume you are upset with Hurley at 4-6, which after looking more in depth I don't think will happen. They are only playing 4 games from their schedule last year so there wasn't a lot of prior knowledge to reference. I counted the 2A teams in KY as losses as well as Tug Valley. Looking more into it, I don't think they will lose any of those games. I'll give you 8-2, with a rock solid shot at running the table.

If that was my lowest point, hey I must be doing alright in life.

I'm guessing you have that week 10 matchup as the game that decides it between W&L and Essex. Would be interesting to see if Northumberland could knock one of them off.

Coach Lewis coached the jv team for Northumberland last year that went 8-1 the best record for Northumberland in jv for as long as I can remember. Those kids showed nothing but respect for coach Lewis. A lot of those kids that started on jv last year are now juniors and should make some noise on the varsity level this year. I might get trashed for this but I think Northumberland could be one of the top teams in the region this year.

Great work by HighestPoint and the Guru -

I will just comment on the NND for now- once Rapp Times preview is out and some games have been played it will be a bit easier and more accurate to predict.

I am thrilled for W&L and the Neck that Joe Taylor has returned to his home of Westmoreland County. Outstanding work by AD Malcolm Lewis and staff. What a win for the kids and the community! Coach Taylor will no doubt build the Eagles back into a powerhouse program.

However, he may need a little more time (and more star talent) to compete with the likes of Essex and Riverheads......

2017 NND preseason rankings-

1) Essex
2) Northumberland
3) W&L
4) Colonial Beach
5) Rappahannock
6) Lancaster

After 20 years of basically way below average football (like only 2-3 years with even a winning season, many years a 0-10 or 2 or 3 wins), Northumberland Football is making a resurgence. Last year regular season's record of 7-3 was the best season in memory. IMO, NHS should have gone 9-1 (only loss to Essex) with the talent the Indians possessed.

Unreal turnovers, poor play calling, unusual player positioning, special team mistakes, the worst hiking/snapping of the ball I have ever seen, too many ridiculous penalties and so on caused a promising season to implode...still at 7-4, a great season for the Indians-

So Northumberland gambles with a very young man (just 22 years old) to take the helm and possibly lead Northumberland to Gridiron Glory. Will it work? It just might...

Coach Aaron Lewis was a three sport star at Northumberland in Football, Basketball, and Track (started all 4 years in each sport). Okay, great athletes do not always make great coaches....

However, Coach Lewis is a proven winner as a coach as well. Besides coaching NHS JV football last season to its best record in decades (only loss a two point defeat to always #1 Essex). The last couple seasons, Lewis has also coached the JV Indian basketball team to an amazing 45-6 record (I think undefeated at home as well).

Can Lewis bring that level of enthusiasm and success to the varsity level? Can Lewis bring the discipline Northumberland Football MUST have to succeed? Will his assembled older strong staff and players respect his youthful leadership?

Should be an exciting season!

I haven't seen Chilhowie this year, but they finished at 9-3 last year. They graduated several from
That squad, but I think they will do pretty good this year. I base that on a lot of young kids that
Played on two very successful middle school teams. The junior class should be loaded with
Athletes. I know you can't tell how middle school kids will do once they are on the Varsity, but Chilhowie
Had 2 very good middle school squads that are now juniors and sophomores.

Both squads went undefeated, and that junior class beat the likes of Abingdon and Gate City,
And only gave up 6 points the entire year. I believe they will do better than 4-6. That first game
Against a very good Marion squad will be a good test for the Warriors. I think a 6-4 record is not
Out of reach. GW, Virginia High, PH, and RR will be tough games also, along with Marion.

As for the Hogo, PH is the favorite, but I look for Northwood to be improved and just may
Surprise a lot of folks. If Chilhowie can compete early on with Marion and J I Burton, they
Just may have a pretty good year. Best of luck to all teams, and I hope no team suffers any
Serious injuries.

Hey DinwiddieProud,

Yes it looks like we may have, hopefully, an exciting 2017 NND football season ahead of us!

Powerhouse Essex is back under the leadership of successful head coach Todd Jones- Coach Jones was back at Essex last year as AD so transition and his staff building should be fairly smooth- Essex could be really strong!

Northumberland has been discussed above - The Indians start off the preseason as ranked in the State Top 10 by the Va Preps staff! Expectations are High in Northumberland Indian Nation! Exciting for a school that has been so down in football for a couple decades.

W&L has a new coach in a fine man, Joe Taylor - College football (Navy) star and coach- very exciting as well!

We have new coaches at CB and Lancaster - Can Coach West turn things around at Rapp after a dismal season? I hope so.

Oh , Congrats DinwiddieProud to your school community about star K'Vaughan Pope's commitment to Ohio State! (The Buckeyes are ranked #3 this preseason!) What an exciting accomplishment for the young man and school!

However, I really wish that he would have stayed in state (Va Tech or UVA mainly). What is up with so many of our great state's great talent going elsewhere?

This make 4 players or more from Virginia on Ohio State's roster. Mitchell from Bishop Sullivan also committed to Ohio State. (Hey, didn't a great Essex player just transfer to Bishop?)

I hope more home grown talent will decide to, well, stay near home...

But congrats to Pope!

That Essex player that transferred to Bishop Sullivan is rising junior,Adarious Jones and he has already been offered by Virginia Tech. There's a thread in here with an article on it

I agree 100%, I wish more players were able to stay in state. I think VT will re-emerge as a big factor in recruiting in-state talent. Heck, I almost became a VT fan myself after that amazing comeback in the bowl game. If that is a sign of the future there at Tech, they will have their pick of kids here in the state.

I think, or maybe it's still just hope, that Bronco is building something good at UVA. We know he can coach, but can he recruit the talent it takes to get to the top tier?

I noted on a thread earlier that I love the fact that UVA-Wise stays in-state for most of their players. UR and JMU do a good job also. And heck, I think half of the VMI team came from Salem. Salem needs to change their name to the "Cadets"!!

It would be great to see kids like Pope right here in the Comonwealth. When these kids takes their visits to schools across the country, I guess they just see something that makes them feel welcome. And, that's the most important thing.

Thanks cavs1 for the mention. It's fun to see this kind of stuff. But it makes me nervous. Pope will be scrutinized because of the publicity. You know he will be challenged by opposing players, trying to get him to lose his cool. (But he is pretty darn good at handling this extra pressure). I think all of us here in Dinwiddie would just as soon be totally under the radar. I know K'Vaughn would. He is just a typical, fun loving, ordinary kid.

Asked where he could improve this year, Pope said he regrets that he didn't go 100% all the time, mainly in practice and sometimes during the game. He said he had a renewed focus and wanted to prove something. That may not bode well for the opposition this season.

22 is very young, even for a 1A head coach. I know of several 24-25 year olds that have been hired this year and in past years. 22 has to be the youngest HC in VA history. I can't imagine anyone any younger. Heck most 22 year olds are still trying to make it through that last year of college.

I head-coached at a VA 5A @ 22. Plenty of challenges, that's for sure!

I'd prefer to keep some level of anonymity on here, so I will just say it was a 757 school.

Anonymity you got because I thought I knew everyone from West Point and I have no idea who you are. lol Assuming the WP stands from West Point.

As we await the complete Va Preps preseason Top 10 - Here are (IMO) the top 12 teams from 1A West and 12 teams 1A East - in no particular order-

Please rank them all or add or take away teams if you would like-

Of the nearly 50 1A teams, I only see maybe 7 or 8 teams with a true shot at the coveted State Title (maybe even about 5 really). Of course, anything can happen down the road.

West - Galax, Parry McCluer, George Wythe, Covington, Bland, Rural Retreat, John I. Burton, Chilhowie, Grundy, Patrick Henry, Hurley, Honaker

East - Riverheads, West Point, Essex, Sussex. Altavista, Northumberland, Colonial Beach, Franklin, Surry, Washington and Lee, Charles City, Central Lunenburg

My parents didn't grow up in WP, so they are "come here's". But yes, West Point grad.

Cavs who is your 5-8 teams who you think have a legit shot? I would assume RH, Sussex, Essex, Altavista, Galax, GW, PM then idk lol.

Yes, I would agree with you on most of the top teams. It is difficult indeed for new (different) programs to break into that "elite" level. This is true whether one discusses 1A Virginia football or the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA.

The "easy" money would be on this top 5 -

Riverheads, Galax, George Wythe, Essex, Sussex Central.

The next top tier schools that may be able to challenge this upcoming season's presumed "elite" programs -

Parry McCluer, Altavista, Washington and Lee, Northumberland

I am looking for the next top team (s) - not sure - need help from our more Western friends - In the East, how does Franklin and Surry look? Lunenburg? etc.

Geographically speaking (not the VHSL breakdown) - My top 9 teams consist of 5 from the West and Four from the East - so a good balance - I look at the world from a geo-historical socioeconomic standpoint - I always beep the horn when returning South once I hit the Mason- Dixon Line, then again once I hit Virginia, and when I pass the NC line as well (my birth state). My wife and kids just shake their heads lol.

It will be quite interesting to see how powerful Essex is this season-

After three amazing seasons (2012, 2013, 2014) that ended with tough losses in the State Championship (dang that Thornhill), Essex had two kinda off years. Note- a "down" year for Essex would be a great year for most programs - not to mention what a tough schedule the Trojans had the last couple seasons.

We will not have to wait long to find out how good Essex is - Opening 2017 game on August 25th -

Sussex Central at Essex -

Sort of a Clash of the Titans early - kind of like College Football's big opening games!

I look for Grundy and Hurley to battle it out for region D this year. And from C it's a 3 horse race imo with Galax, GW and PM. For D I think the schedule will be the downfall of whoever comes out. And you are slot on with that week 1 battle of Sussex vs Essex man that's a damn good game.

Of the two "down years" after the three appearances in the championship game; one was a loss to Galax in the final four game after being the one seed in the east (which was played a hour away from Essex as a home game). Then last year they fell to Riverheads in the second round...Losing only to the eventual state champs five years in a row in the playoffs (2012 in 2A).

I know the Championships are lacking in Tappahannok, but that is a very impressive run. I would think with Jones back in charge it would continue.

To go back even a little further...2006 Essex went 12-1. Got beat by Goochland during the D.J. Coles and Hicks years in the state semi. In 2007 when people were looking for that Essex/Gretna state semi, Essex went 11-1. King William upset them in the Region A Championship game when they surprised us with a passing attack from bringing up a freshman QB off of jv. I forgot his name. In 2008 Essex went 12-1. Knocked out in the state semi by Gretna 45-40. The Barksdale kid was a BEAST!!! One of the best games I've seen. In 2009, 14-0 State champs. The 2010 season, Essex was pre-season #1. That's the year Jones resigned and Essex didn't get a coach (Jenkins) until a few weeks before the season started. Finished 6-4 and to me, that was off talent because the coaching sucked. In 2011, Fulks took over as coach. That year we finished 4-7. We became a run heavy team instead of a spread team for most of the season. Started back with the spread in the last game of regular season when Dominik Broaduss came up from jv. Actually made it to the playoffs as the #16 seed and lost to Amelia in the 1st round. Then came the '12, '13, '14, '15 and '16 years that's been posted about. From 1999-2016 ( reference ), Essex has only had 1 season that they finished under .500 in the regular season. That was the 2011 season.. 4-6.

The freshman quarterback for KW that year was Lewis Redman. KW actually started 1-5 that year before he was called up. Great win over Essex that year but no match for Gretna and their own freshman qb Nic Miller, as they beat KW 42-0. Gretna actually beat Gate City 52-0 in the championship. Little did anyone know but that was Brookes 35th and last year at KW and maybe one of his best coaching jobs.
