This will obviously change over the next 6 weeks but right now the playoffs would be...

#8 Henrico at #1 Manchester
#7 Matoaca at #2 Highland Springs
#6 Douglas Freeman at #3 Deep Run
#5 Varina at #4 Prince George

Interesting note is that the Royals are currently in the playoffs for the first time since 1994! Can't wait to see how this develops over the next few weeks.

With the way the region is now, every single week is huge. Going to be super competitive to see who makes the playoffs and seedings.

REGION 5B: 10/7/2019

1) Manchester (5-0): 30.0
2) Highland Springs (6-0*): 29.2
3) Deep Run (5-0): 28.8
4) Varina (5-1): 26.167
5) Matoaca (4-1): 25.4
6) Douglas Freeman (5-1): 24.833
7) Prince George (3-2): 24.2
8) Henrico (3-3): 22.5
---
9) Clover Hill (3-2): 22.4
10) L.C. Bird (3-2): 22.2
11) Atlee (2-3): 20.8
12) Hermitage (2-4): 20.667
13) Glen Allen (2-3): 19.8
14) Mills Godwin (2-4): 18.333
15) Midlothian (1-4): 18.2
16) J.R. Tucker (1-4): 17.8
17) Meadowbrook (0-5): 15.6

ANALYSIS: The top three hold, while Varina moves up one spot with their thrashing of Lake Taylor, Matoaca advances two spots by defeating Prince George, who drops from fourth to seventh. Henrico holds on to the eighth and final spot, barely, after their loss to Highland Springs.

Obviously, the Highland Springs/Manchester winner grabs the top spot, and the inside track to the top seed, after Friday's game. As for remaining schedules, the Springers, after a bye week, get Atlee, Colonial Forge, and, of course, Varina. The Lancers still have Midlothian, Powhatan, L.C. Bird and Cosby. Strength of schedule favors Highland Springs.

The Deep Run/Douglas Freeman game this Friday is huge, too. Fans should not forget about some other very important games during the hoopla over Springers/Lancers. A Wildcat win puts them in prime position to possibly run the table, with Mills Godwin, J.R. Tucker, Glen Allen and Thomas Jefferson remaining. The finale with the Vikings, who could be playing for the top seed in Region 2A,is a home game. For the Rebels, they'll get a bye next week, then host Hermitage and John Marshall before going to Glen Allen to end the regular season.

After winning a huge game over Central District rival Prince George, Matoaca, up to #5, now must contend with a Dinwiddie team who is 2-3 and on the outside looking in in Region 4B. If Matoaca canmatch what Prince George did, win at Dinwiddie, there will be much more respect for Marcus Dreher and Matoaca.

Also big this week? Try Atlee at Henrico and L.C. Bird at Clover Hill. These four teams occupy the 8th through 11th spots in this week's rankings. The most pressure will be on the Raiders, who still have Varina and Highland Springs on their schedule, making Friday's game at Henrico almost a must-win. Both the Skyhawks and Cavaliers would love an Atlee win, clearing the win for either to make their numerical case for the #8 seed with a Friday win.

(*)--Highland Springs rating number based on nine games, not ten, due to playing a private school.

REGION 5B: 10/14/2019

1) Highland Springs (7-0*): 31.333
2) Deep Run (6-0): 30.333
3) Manchester (5-1): 29.333
4) Varina (6-1): 27.571
5) Prince George (4-2): 25.0
6) Douglas Freeman (5-2): 24.571
7) Matoaca (4-2): 24.167

9) Henrico (4-3): 23.714

13) Atlee (2-4): 20.5
14) Mills Godwin (3-4): 20.286
15) Midlothian (1-5): 18.667
16) J.R. Tucker (1-5): 17.5
17) Meadowbrook (0-6): 16.5

ANALYSIS: So, the fallout from the battle between Highland Springs (*--only nine games count in VHSL formula, so in the league's eyes, they are 6-0 right now) and Manchester is the Springers taking the top spot, and, Manchester falling to third after Deep Run beat a five-win Douglas Freeman team. Strength of schedule between the Lancers and Wildcats, it's close. The current combined record of Deep Run's remaining opponents is 12-13, for Manchester, it's 12-12. But the Lancers get a Class 6 school in Cosby, while the Wildcats play three Region 5B teams and one from Region 2A in Thomas Jefferson. If they both win out, it will be close. Varina, however, wants a say in all this, and could really upset the apple cart by winning out and, by doing so, finally vanquishing their arch rivals in Highland Springs November 8th. We see now a definitive split between the top four and the next, say, seven teams. That doesn't mean Prince George, for example, couldn't catch Varina should they lose to, say both Henrico and the Springers. It will become more difficult should Varina beat Henrico Friday and Prince George falls to Thomas Dale. It gets really crazy from fifth to eleventh place. We don't include Hermitage because they've played seven games, and it's going to be difficult to earn a playoff bid here with a 5-5 record unless you have a very strong strength of schedule. Two of the Panthers' last three opponents are currently under .500. Atlee has to beat Lee-Davis and Hanover, plus either Varina or Highland Springs, to have a chance. No one makes the playoffs here at 4-6. L.C. Bird's road is very tough, too, with Cosby, Monacan, and Manchester all still to come. All of them are currently 5-1.

REGION 5B:

1) Highland Springs (7-0*): 32.0
2) Deep Run (7-0): 30.857
3) Manchester (6-1): 30.0
4) Varina (7-1): 29.0
5) Prince George (5-2): 26.429

9) Henrico (4-4): 23.875
10) L.C. Bird (4-3): 23.714

12) Hermitage (2-5): 21.857
Atlee (3-4): 21.857
14) Mills Godwin (3-5): 20.5
15) Midlothian (1-6): 19.286
16) J.R. Tucker (1-6): 17.714
17) Meadowbrook (0-7): 16.571

ANALYSIS: First, our weekly reminder that we will be dividing Highland Springs' total points by nine, not ten, on November 8th, as they opened their season playing a private school team. The Springers have the inside track on the #1 seed, and get it if they finish unbeaten. They have Atlee (3-4) Friday, then go to Colonial Forge (6-1) and finish, of course, with Varina (7-1). No one near them has a remaining strength of schedule like them. Deep Run gets 1-6 J.R. Tucker Friday, finishing with 4-3 Glen Allen and 6-1 Thomas Jefferson, while Manchester has Powhatan, L.C. Bird and Cosby, who have a combined 12-9 record. Varina enjoys their bye this week, then will face Atlee and Highland Springs. Even with their historic win over Thomas Dale, Prince George still finds themselves two and a half points behind Varina, but squarely in fifth. However, their hold on fifth place isn't as strong as they'd like, as Huguenot let them down with Clover Hill's huge late comeback victory over the Falcons Friday to move the Cavaliers from 8th to 6th, leaping idle Douglas Freeman, who slips to 7th, and Matoaca, who beat a one-win Colonial Heights team, and slipped to eighth. Henrico is a point behind, and go to 1-6 Hanover Friday. In the battle of the Warriors, a Henrico win would give them 26 points, while Matoaca, who hosts Thomas Dale, would earn 34 points with a win, but only 19 with a loss, opening the door for Henrico as well as L.C. Bird. The Skyhawks are at 6-1 Monacan, and would earn 36 points with a road victory. Glen Allen gets 4-3 John Marshall this week, and with a win, 32 points. Don't forget, other residual points come into play based on the performance of past opponents, and whether you defeated them or not. With six losses or more, Midlothian, J.R. Tucker and Meadowbrook look to next year, while Atlee, Hermitage, and Mills Godwin's hopes hang by a thread.

If Salem (VB) is this good, why are people saying that Maury is the favorite to come out of 5A Region A?

I'm not sure Maury is a favorite at this point. They have the high profile recruits but Salem VB has talent too. Last year's playoff game was very close, too.

I'd make this a coin flip, just MHO. But they'd have to get through a gauntlet of possible upset games to get to the regional A Finals to play each other! By far this is likely to be the most exciting Class in the playoffs this year. Im not sure we've had a more competitive group of teams before. It would be an upset if Maury vs Salem doesn't happen but it wouldn't surprise me if a 1-2 loss team ends up playing in that game either.

Power rating need to go away or give teams the opportunity to play a better school. Like beach schools mainly class 5 or 6 so of course there rating will look better over a eastern or southeastern schools which are mixed between all classes.

I really see Maury as the better team with a more balanced of a attack where they can get you all types of ways. Where Salem issue would be what happens if you stop the run do they have a passing game to open it back up.

Last year's game was a squeaker. 31-28 for Maury. IF they play again, expect the same type of game.

Its gonna be interesting game of styles....and one thing does anyone know anything about Woodside are they really that good or is the pen district just not as good?

804 gets no love. Northern VA has the easiest run through the playoffs to state championship. But somehow they always stack their teams above better 757 and 804 teams. I really wish they allowed stone Bridge and other NOVA teams to go through 757 teams or 804 teams in the state semis. I can guarantee they would have a much tougher time advancing to state championship. Instead they make the 2 speed regions play each other.

These rankings are based on strength of schedule. Those teams up there are playing tough schedules, especially the likes of Westfield(toughest district in the state) and Freedom do play through a battlefield of good opponents. HSHS has CLEARLY the toughest schedule in the state. I do wish they would rotate regions facing each other in the Semis too though! I think it’s based on travel.

It would make sense to rotate to provide the best match in the championship game

Thanks for the thought, but the Concorde is a shell of its former self. If you said that for any season beginning a few years ago, yes. Not now. I don't know a ton about the 757 districts, but this year the best district (all divisions) is probably one of those. Perhaps even one of the Region B districts.

I can't speak for class 6a and but as far a class 5a is concerned 804 has been getting the short end of the state rankings for a while. When HS won the states in 2015 and 2016 Bird and Hermitage could have easily won the states also. But if you look at class 5 rankings those years Hermitage and HS were not in the top 5.

REGION 5B: 10/28/19
1) Highland Springs (8-0*): 33.143**
2) Manchester (7-1): 31.125**
3) Deep Run (8-0): 31.0**
4) Varina (7-1): 29.875**
5) Prince George (6-2): 27.75
6) Clover Hill (6-2): 27.5
7) Douglas Freeman (6-2): 26.0
8) Henrico (5-4): 24.667

9) Matoaca (5-3): 24.5
10) L.C. Bird (4-4): 23.75

14) Mills Godwin (3-5): 20.875
15) Midlothian (2-6): 20.75
16) J.R. Tucker (1-7): 18.375
17) Meadowbrook (0-8): 17.375

ANALYSIS: The top four teams can add a week to their schedules, and, with another win, Prince George and Clover Hill should be able to do the same. As we discussed Friday night on "On The Sidelines Extra", Manchester did overtake Deep Run for the #2 seed. Both the Lancers and Wildcats play 4-4 teams in desperate need of a win to stay alive, as Manchester goes to L.C. Bird while Deep Run travels to Glen Allen for our Game of The Week on 102.9 The Mater on Friday. Clover Hill gets winless George Wythe, and would get 24 points for a win. Prince George must try to conquer Hopewell, who just lost the #1 seed in Region 3A despite still being undefeated. If Hopewell wins, Prince George would get 21 points in the loss. Thus, the teams could flip. Then there's Douglas Freeman, who suddenly find a John Marshall team coming in at 5-3. A victory for the Rebels could erase most of the deficit between themselves and both the Royals and Cavaliers.

Henrico finishes their regular season Friday with a two-win Lee-Davis team, while Matoaca has two games left, beginning with a trip to Petersburg, who is in a fight for the final playoff bid in Region 3A, just as the Warriors are here. A win by both "Warriors" would likely flip Matoaca back to the #8 seed, but, it gets tricky. What if L.C. Bird stuns Manchester? Then the Skyhawks likely disrupt everything and head to the #8 seed with a game left. Then there's Glen Allen, who missed a golden opportunity by losing to John Marshall Friday. The Jaguars find themselves, though, in a situation where two wins (Deep Run, Douglas Freeman), and maybe one or two other results in their favor, from trying to grab that final seed.

If Highland Springs wins out (Colonial Forge, Varina), they are the #1 seed. If they lose one, they could still be the top seed. If they lose both, the door is wide open for any of the three teams behind them to rise up. A reminder that we won't know the final projections for this region now until after the Varina/Highland Springs game is played Saturday November 9th at Hermitage High School at 1pm.

New this week: teams which have wrapped up postseason bids will be noted with (**). We also check the top schools in other regions. If a school has clinched the top seed in their region, they have a "Z" by them.

NOE: The A and B regions will play in state semifinal action come December 7, while Regions C and D will square off. State Championship Saturday

REGION 5B:

1) Highland Springs (9-0*): 34.75**
2) Manchester (8-1): 32.444**
3) Deep Run (9-0): 31.778**
4) Varina (8-1): 30.667**
5) Prince George (6-3): 27.889**
6) Clover Hill (7-2): 27.556**
7) Douglas Freeman (7-2): 27.222
8) Henrico (6-4): 25.8
---
9) Matoaca (5-4): 24.111
10) L.C. Bird (4-5): 24.0

ANALYSIS: First, to be clear, there's essentially one playoff berth up for grabs Friday night. Matoaca must defeat 9-0 Hopewell to have a chance to make the postseason. The Warriors (Matoaca) currently have 217 points. They would earn 42 points for a win over the Blue Devils, which would put them at 259. Henrico is currently at 258, but will get at least four rider points this week from the winners of the two Hanover County games (Atlee/Hanover, Tomato Bowl 61) and one from the Varina/Highland Springs showdown Saturday. Should Deep Run beat Thomas Jefferson, that's another point. With all that, Henrico would move to 264. Matoaca will get two from the Prince George/Meadowbrook winner, two if Colonial Heights upsets Petersburg, one if the Wave wins, and one point from the Thomas Dale/Dinwiddie winner. If Petersburg wins, then they are at 263. Matoaca would then need Powhatan to defeat Huguenot to get to 265/266 points, Varina to beat Highland Springs to hit 266/267, and J.R. Tucker to beat Hermitage for 268/269, again, the higher number if Colonial Heights beats Petersburg, the lower number should the Wave win. The best Henrico can do is 269, but that would take a Meadowbrook win over Prince George. Realistically, their ceiling is 267. Matoaca's maximum number is also 269, including wins from Colonial Heights and a J.R. Tucker win over Hermitage. Henrico needs Hermitage to win to earn two points. The Cat Bowl looms large. If Matoaca loses, Henrico is in. Douglas Freeman isn't completely out of the woods yet, either. A loss to Glen Allen puts them at 261 points. Their maximum number is 273, which includes wins by both James River (over L.C. Bird) and Lee-Davis (over Patrick Henry). Neither team is favored, thus 269 is a possibility. It should be enough to keep the #7 seed over Henrico, but Rebel fans should root for Hermitage this week to keep Matoaca, with a win, no higher than 267, provided Petersburg wins. A Huguenot win over Powhatan helps, too.

Up top, Highland Springs is #1 with a win over Varina, and they have the inside track to the top seed even if they lose. They'll know whether they must win when they hit the field at Hermitage Saturday. If Varina wins, they still may end up in the #4 slot, unless Deep Run or Manchester lose, then a win definitely moves them up. A Manchester win gives them 328 points before looking at other games involving games on their schedule, a Deep Run win give them 326. Highland Springs, with a loss, would be at 299 points before rider points, but remember they are divided by nine, not ten, their game with Avalon of Maryland not counting per VHSL rules.

If Clover Hill beats Monacan, they move into the #5 spot, no matter what happens to Prince George. L.C. Bird has been eliminated from contention.

OTHER CLASS 5 REGIONS:

Region 5A: 1) Maury: 32.667; 2) Salem-VB: 32.444; 3) Indian River: 30.333; 4) Woodside 30.0

Region 5D: 1) Mountain View: 30.333; 2) North Stafford: 25.556; 3) PH-Roanoke: 25.5; 4) Harrisonburg: 23.222
