Some huge difference between region A and B. Leader in B is in 6th place in A.

Maybe time to split into 2 groups instead of 4 and take top 10 or 12. Eliminate some of the first round mismatched to boot.

I agree 100% Park View has an absolute cupcake schedule. Petersburg would beat them by 5 touchdowns!

Exactly why it should be top 32 in the playoffs, regardless of district or region. You get a true state champion then. It's not fair for York, Hopewell, Norcom and Phoebus to eliminate each other but Goochland or JM to make it to the semi-finals all because of geography.

My thoughts exactly. Time to change it all.

I say move Hopewell, Park View, Petersburg, and New Kent into Region B but keep their respective district schedules intact.

They just had that system two years ago. Class 3 East and Class 3 West. And even when they tried to keep the halves split into Conferences by region, Hopewell had to travel to Skyline for a first round playoff one year, and Skyline to Hopewell for first rounder the next year. Under the plan you guys propose, you could actually have a 4 hour one-way trip for a first round playoff game.

My thoughts would be to have Region A and B always play each other as region C and D. Alternatively just combine region A and B into one region and take the top 12. Same for region C and D. The final would be winners in each region. That would eliminate Hopewell playing Skyline unless they make the final as I believe they are in region C.

That would make sense for football, but what about all of the other sports. I doubt anyone wants their soccer/baseball/volleyball teams to have to go from the Peninsula all the way to Loudon on a Tuesday and then turn around and go to Falls Church on a Thursday.

I agree that the top 5 in 3A are better than anyone in 3B in football, but football can't be the only consideration unless they do a separate system for football. Unfortunately there are no easy answers.

Skyline is in 3B. You clearly missed every point I was making. Even when A and B were together, in Conferences 26,27,28, and 29. They had to put Hopewell and Skyline together in round 1 so that Skyline was not playing a Virginia Beach team. Also, like Bulldog was saying, the whole region in softball were in one town in Front Royal. Maybe we should just eliminate softball, wrestling, etc East of I-95, since those schools just getting in the way.

Back when it was split into 2 regions, there were games that had huge travel (like 4+ hours).

I don't know how that is the answer. I don't know how doing that gives a better "true champion"? A true champion beats all the teams. So what if a team beats someone in a Regional Semifinal as opposed to State semifinals?

By the way, I liked the 2 regions better, but I don't think the arguments here are the best case for it. And it is all in cycles. Not that long ago James Monroe was the team to make it to finals a bunch of years.

REGION 3A: 10/7/2019

1) Hopewell (5-0): 26.8
2) York (5-0): 26.0
Phoebus (4-1): 26.0
4) I.C. Norcom (4-1): 22.6
5) Lafayette (4-1): 22.2
6) Park View-South Hill (3-2): 18.2
7) Booker T. Washington (2-4): 17.5
8) Petersburg (2-3): 17.4
---
9) Southampton (2-3): 16.2
10) New Kent (2-3): 16.0
11) Tabb (1-4): 15.8
12) Lakeland (0-5): 14.8
13) Colonial Heights (1-5): 13.333

ANALYSIS: As expected, Hopewell leapfrogs York for the top spot after winning over a three-win Class 6 school in Thomas Dale, while York struggled to beat one-win Tabb. Phoebus climbs into a second place tie despite a loss thanks to strength of schedule. Petersburg holds on to the eighth spot. New Kent has a golden opportunity to climb higher when they go to York on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Hopewell has to go to Petersburg, and the Crimson Wave see that as a golden opportunity as well, to both solidify playoff position and climb over Park View and Booker T. Washington. The top five have separated themselves from the rest of the region. This week is crucial for both New Kent and Petersburg.

REGION 3B: 10/7/2019

1) Goochland (4-1): 21.2
2) Brentsville District (2-3): 19.0
James Monroe (2-3): 19.0
4) George Mason (3-2): 18.8
5) Central-Woodstock (3-2): 18.0
6) Skyline (2-3): 16.4
7) William Monroe (2-3): 15.8
8) Warren County (1-4): 15.2
---
9) Manassas Park (2-3): 15.0
10) Armstrong (1-5): 13.167
11) Independence (0-6): 13.0

ANALYSIS: A big win over a then 4-1 Amelia team gets the Bulldogs into the top spot in their new region. James Monroe will look to draw closer to them when they play 3-2 King George out of Class 4 on Friday, while Goochland gets sub .500 Prince Edward. Armstrong's win over Park View Friday was critical, maybe even season saving. Now the Wildcats, despite their 1-5 mark, could jump into the playoff discussion with a win over Lee-Davis Friday night.

Manassas Park is not eligible for the playoffs, so Armstrong is technically 9th.

Looked it up and you are correct. But they have only played those 2 times.
Yes, we have never met regular season. Now we are back in class 3 maybe we can after our Goochland series wraps.

that’s awfully presumptuous believing that it will be goochland in region B. Kinda like in 2013 thanksgiving weekend

You misunderstand . Goochland is our one OOD game, game 1 this year and next. I don’t know if it a contract for more than the usual 2 years. After that we have an opening for game one. I was not referring to who would win Region B for the playoffs.

Goochland should most likely be the Region B rep. With all due respect to teams 2-7, at best those are middle of the pack teams in any other district.

I'll take JM. I've seen both teams and I'll take JM by a score. Goochland may very well be slightly better in the trenches but I'd give JM the edge in skill players. JM will be very prepared for the double wing as they face Courtland, King George, Spotsy who all have Wing T or Single Wing style schemes, very similar to what Goochland does. On the other hand, Goochland has played 1 team this year with the skill players comparable to JM. Lafayette 33-0. 3B is a certainly the weakest region from top to bottom in C3 but Goochland isn't going to walk through without any resistance IMO. TJ-Richmond has been winning games. JM-Goochland should be the championship unless JM finishes 4-5, which they might. I'm not trying to bash Goochland either, they are very solid and the road to the region is certainly going through them.

Agreed on all points. My thoughts are that Goochland usually looks to be out skilled but somehow finds a way to defend. I would say IF they win or lose it wont be by a huge amount.

How fast/quick overall is JM this year. How good is there QB?

They returned both RBs from last year, both are diminutive but quick and elusive. They got two transfer WRs, one very fast the other more possession. Their best WR from last year Aidan Ryan was moved to QB and he's got a strong arm with very dangerous legs. They've got a very talented freshman QB who they try to play every game for at least two series, when they do that, Ryan goes back to WR, giving them another matchup problem out wide. Their biggest issue, as with most C3 teams is depth. I'm not sure how healthy they are since we played them week 2.

REGION 3A: 10/14/2019

1) Hopewell (6-0): 27.333
2) York (6-0): 27.0
3) Phoebus (5-1): 26.167
4) Lafayette (5-1): 23.667
5) I.C. Norcom (4-2): 21.5
6) Booker T. Washington (2-4): 18.333
Park View-South Hill (3-3): 18.333
8) Tabb (2-4): 18.167

9) Petersburg (2-4): 17.167
10) New Kent (2-4): 16.167
11) Southampton (2-4): 15.833
12) Lakeland (0-6): 14.667
13) Colonial Heights (1-6): 14.0

ANALYSIS: The Blue Devils cannot shake York, who survived New Kent 29-28 last week. Phoebus lurks, too. Hopewell's last four opponents currently have a combined 11-13 record, York's are 10-14, and one of them is a Class 2 school (Bruton). Phoebus still has unbeaten Woodside on their schedule. It's going to be a dogfight at the top here down the stretch. Petersburg is still in the thick of the race, a win over Meadowbrook Friday would right the ship and get them ready for Prince George, Matoaca and Colonial Heights down the stretch. New Kent gets Grafton, then a Tabb team that took York to the wire recently as well.

REGION 3B:

1) Goochland (5-1): 21.833
2) James Monroe (3-3): 20.667
3) Brentsville District (3-3): 20.167
4) Skyline (3-3): 18.5
5) George Mason (3-3): 18.0
6) Warren County (2-4): 17.667
7) Central-Woodstock (3-3): 17.5
8) Manassas Park (3-3): 15.833
---
9) William Monroe (2-4): 15.667
10) Independence (0-7): 13.857
11) Armstrong (1-6): 13.143

ANALYSIS: Goochland has, in the eyes of the VHSL, three games left, as their rescheduled game against Blue Ridge won't count. The Bulldogs' best chance to build a numerical case for the top seed comes Friday when they battle 5-1 Nottoway, coming off a bye week.

https://rvasportsnetwork.blogspot.com/2019/10/vhsl-football-region-standings-october.html

York plays class 2 Bruton but as a District game don’t they get bonus points awarded to effectively make it a class 3 opponent? Granted Bruton is winless and will remain that way. Additionally York still needs to play class 4 undefeated Warhill. If Lafayette wins out and Phoebus loses to Woodside could Lafayette move to #3?

I'm not sure Petersburg makes the playoffs. They should have an easy time of it against struggling Meadowbrook this week, but both PG and Matoaca are big, physical teams. The Crisom Wave are coming off of back to back tough games against two other physical, hard hitting teams in Dinwiddie and Hopewell. The Petersburg kids are tough, I'll grant you that, but there are just not enough of them. They have been asked to weather the storm of four out of five programs that have two, and even three times as many players. The wear and tear on these young atheles is tough to endure.

I'm rooting for them. Coach Scott is doing a great job in Petersburg. But I think they need to get a win over PG or Matoaca, along with wins over MB and CH to play a game 11.

REGION 3A:

1) Hopewell (7-0): 28.286
2) York (7-0): 28.0
3) Phoebus (6-1): 27.429
4) Lafayette (6-1): 24.143
5) I.C. Norcom (5-2): 23.286
6) Tabb (3-4): 19.857
7) Booker T. Washington (3-4): 19.714
8) Petersburg (3-4): 18.714
---
9) Southampton (3-4): 17.714
New Kent (3-4): 17.714
11) Park View-South Hill (3-4): 17.571
12) Lakeland (0-7): 15.143
13) Colonial Heights (1-7): 15.0

ANALYSIS: Hopewell's comeback win over Dinwiddie keeps them ahead in the region, but they simply cannot shake off either York or Phoebus. Not only would a 10-0 season be memorable and historic, it may be necessary for the Blue Devils to earn (really earn) the number one seed. The Blue Devils have Meadowbrook Friday while York plays 2-5 Smithfield. Don't be surprised if, with a win, York takes the #1 seed next Monday. But while York finishes with undefeated Warhill and winless Bruton, Hopewell gets two Central District rivals currently in the Region 5B playoff race in Prince George and Matoaca. Both will need wins to secure their postseason ticket. This will be a very interesting final three weeks for Hopewell. Phoebus, by the way, has 8-0 Woodside this Thursday, then finish with Heritage (1-7) and Menchville (3-4). If the Phantoms win out, we'll be triple checking our numbers and division come November 8th. It looks like a two-team race for the #4 seed between Lafayette and I.C. Norcom, and, it's beginning to look like they may face each other in the region quarterfinals. Petersburg gets a much needed win to return to 8th place, but need to go at least 2-1 in their final three games to extend their season. New Kent's path gets better with a win Friday over Tabb, and much more difficult should they lose.

REGION 3B:

1) Goochland (6-1): 23.714
2) James Monroe (4-3): 22.714
3) Brentsville District (4-3): 21.429
4) George Mason (4-3): 19.714
5) William Monroe (3-4): 17.857
6) Skyline (3-4): 17.571
7) Warren County (2-6): 17.143
8) Central-Woodstock (3-4): 17.0
---
9) Manassas Park (4-3): 16.857
10) Independence (0-8): 14.0
11) Armstrong (1-7): 13.625

ANALYSIS: The Bulldogs remain on top, but James Monroe impresses with a win over then 5-1 Spotsylvania last Friday to stay close. This week, Goochland plays a private school team which won't count in these standings. James Monroe's best chance to contend for the top seed is to win this Friday over 5-3 Chancellor, as their two remaining opponents each only have one win. If James Monroe loses Friday and Goochland can win November 1st against Central-Lunenburg, the #1 seed is theirs to lose.

OTHER CLASS 3 REGIONS:

REGION 3C: 1) Spotswood, 2) Heritage/Lynchburg, 3) Liberty Christian Academy
REGION 3D: 1) Lord Botetourt, 2T) Northside, 2T) Hidden Valley

REGION 3A: 10/28/19

1) Phoebus (7-1): 29.875**
2) York (8-0): 28.75**
Hopewell (8-0): 28.75**
4) Lafayette (7-1): 24.75**
5) I.C. Norcom (5-3): 23.25
6) Tabb (4-4): 21.375
7) Booker T. Washington (3-5): 20.25
8) Petersburg (3-5): 19.0
Southampton (4-4): 19.0
---
10) Park View-South Hill (4-4): 18.75
11) New Kent (3-5): 17.5

ANALYSIS: As expected, Phoebus races to the top after a win over previously unbeaten Woodside back on Thursday. York's win over Smithfield helps them catch Hopewell, who lost ground with a win over winless Meadowbrook. This week, Phoebus plays 2-7 Heritage, Hopewell has 6-2 Prince George, while York has its shot at an unbeaten in Warhill. If all three win, York may become the third team in as many weeks to take #1, with Hopewell and Phoebus right there with them heading into Week 11, where the Phantoms make up a game lost to Hurricane Dorian with Menchville (3-5), York plays winless Bruton, and Hopewell gets a Matoaca team currently 5-3 and fighting for their own playoff bid up in Region 5B. Meanwhile, Petersburg is tied for the eighth and final bid with Southampton. Southampton has Park View Friday in what could become an elimination game. Petersburg contends with Matoaca this week, finishing with Colonial Heights. New Kent may, or may not, play Jamestown this week, as Jamestown is struggling to field a full team right now. The Trojans end against two-win Smithfield. The Trojans are barely in the race.

REGION 3B: 10/28/19

1) Goochland (7-1*): 25.0**
2) James Monroe (5-3): 24.5**
3) Brentsville District (5-3): 22.75**
4) William Monroe (4-4): 19.5
5) Skyline (4-4): 19.375
6) George Mason (4-4): 18.75
7) Warren County (2-6): 16.875
8) Central Woodstock (3-5): 16.75
---
9) Manassas Park (4-4): 16.375

ANALYSIS: James Monroe defeated both Spotsylvania and Chancellor in the last two weeks, both Class 4 teams above .500. to almost catch the Bulldogs for the top seed. But they finish with two teams that currently have two combined wins (Courtland, Caroline), while Goochland plays Central-Lunenburg on Friday, currently 5-4, then finish with two-win Bluestone. If Goochland wins out, they should be the top seed.

OTHER CLASS 3 REGIONS:

Region 3C: 1) Spotswood 26.5, 2) Heritage-Lynchburg 26.125, 3) Liberty Christian 23.25
Region 3D: 1) Lord Botetourt 28.5, 2) Northside 26.0, 3) Hidden Valley 24.75

New this week: teams which have wrapped up postseason bids will be noted with (**). Teams that have played a private school team and will have their final rating number divided by nine, not ten, at the end of the regular season, will still be noted with (*) beside their record. We also check the top schools in other regions. The A and B regions will face off in state semifinal play on December 7, while Regions C and D will square off.

Teams which have wrapped up postseason bids will be noted with (**). Teams that have played a private school team and will have their final rating number divided by nine, not ten, at the end of the regular season, will still be noted with (*) beside their record. We also check the top schools in other regions. If a school has clinched the top seed in their region, they have a "Z" by them.

NOE: The A and B regions will play in state semifinal action come December 7, while Regions C and D will square off. State Championship Saturday

REGION 3A:

1) York (9-0): 30.667**
Hopewell (9-0): 30.667**
3) Phoebus (8-1): 30.111**
4) Lafayette (8-1): 26.333**
5) I.C. Norcom (5-4): 23.333**
6) Tabb (5-4): 22.0
7) Petersburg (4-5): 21.222
8) Booker T. Washington (4-5): 20.889
--
9) Southampton (5-4): 20.444
10) New Kent (4-5): 18.778
11) Park View-South Hill (4-5): 18.556

ANALYSIS: Advantage Hopewell. A win Friday over 5-4 Matoaca should be enough to break the current tie with fellow unbeaten York and claim the top spot. York plays 0-9 Bruton while Phoebus, who held the lead for one week, has 4-5 Menchville in a makegood game from early September lost to Hurricane Dorian. You see where strength of schedule really hurts Lafayette, who is 8-1 like Phoebus, but can't finish any higher than fourth and, regardless of this week's results, seems to have that locked. Again, the Petersburg win over Matoaca was titanic, but there's still work to be done. They must defeat Colonial Heights. Southampton finishes with 3-6 Franklin in Class 1, who needs a win to have hope for a first round home game in Region 1B. Booker T. Washington has I.C. Norcom, who is trying to keep the fifth seed ahead of Tabb, who finish with Jamestown.

REGION 3B:

1) Goochland (8-1*): 26.5**
2) James Monroe (6-3): 25.111**
3) Brentsville District (6-3): 24.333**
4) William Monroe (5-4): 21.111**
5) Skyline (4-5): 19.444**
6) George Mason (4-5): 18.667**
7) Central Woodstock (4-5): 17.778
8) Warren County (2-7): 16.889
---
9) Manassas Park (4-4) 16.625

ANALYSIS: This is simple. A Goochland win over Bluestone (2-7) gives the Bulldogs the top seed in their inaugural season in Region 3B. James Monroe faces Caroline, who only has one win. However, if the Bulldogs slip and James Monroe wins, they mathematically can wrestle the top seed away, and Brentsville District could enter the conversation for at least the #2 seed with a win over George Mason.

OTHER CLASS 3 REGIONS:

Region 3C: 1) Heritage (Lynchburg): 28.222; 2) Spotswood: 26.667; 3) Liberty Christian: 24.111; 4) Rockbridge Co: 23.556
Region 3D: 1) Lord Botetourt: 29.556; 2) Magna Vista: 26.333; 3) Northside: 25.667; 4) Hidden Valley: 25.0
