NEWS: VHSL Clarification On Governor's Modified Stay-At-Home Directive
The following was released by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) office in Charlottesville Thursday night as clarification regarding Governor Ralph Northam's new modified "stay-at-home" directive announced earlier in the day.
**********
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) clarified the impact of updated statewide measures and recommendations to contain COVID-19 on VHSL sports and activities, specifically, guidelines for wearing facemasks and spectators attending athletic competitions.

During times of substantial COVID-19 activity VDH strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines. There is strong evidence to show that mask use prevents the spread of COVID-19. We also know that participating in sports has both physical and psychological health benefits. Risks from the virus can be decreased if athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators follow public health guidelines.

Additionally, if wearing a mask makes participation in sports difficult, it is advisable not to participate in sports at this time.

“With the support of the Governor’s office and our VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC), the VHSL is requiring each school to follow the recommendations of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP),” said VHSL Executive Director, Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “There are some sports in which the mask should not be worn, such as cheerleading, gymnastics, wrestling and swim and dive.”

In addition, the VHSL will comply with Executive Order 72 capacity limits:

  1. For sports played indoors, spectators must be limited to 25 persons per field (indoor courts). For sports played outdoors, spectators are limited to two guests per player. The total number of spectators cannot exceed 30 percent of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue.

The VHSL has rescinded its requirement that face coverings be worn during training and competition.

Just as a follow up note... a lot of Fairfax and Arlington schools (maybe Loudoun and Prince William too) are broadcasting at least boys and girls basketball on their own YouTube channel [James Madison HS (Warhawk Nation Live) and South Lakes HS (South Lakes Seahawks), others?] or thru their athletics Twitter Feed (Yorktown, etc.). Check the schools' athletics or booster club websites, Facebook pages, or the teams' Twitter feed for games.

Loudoun and Prince William seem to have most of their games on NFHS Network.

Full disclosure: Although not a novice, I am far from an IT expert.
Be careful what you link to when trying to find team links on FB. There are a lot of scammers and phishing operations out there who have picked up on the fact that parents and fans want to view the games on line since that is the only option currently available to most of us. If you do not have the exact link from the school for the game you wish to see, a simple search such as "(High School Name) Boys Basketball" will take you to links that appear to be game links but they are not. As far as I know, you might be asked to join a group page (depending on the school) to see a game but you should not have to sign up for anything.
