The current schedule begins in December with Season 1, which includes traditional winter sports such as basketball, indoor track and field, swimming and wrestling. Under this plan, Season 1 practices begin on Dec. 14, and the first contests can be played on Dec. 28.

Regional and state playoffs would vary.

In basketball, regionals will be played Feb. 8-13 with only the champion from each region advancing to the state tournament. The state semifinals will be played Feb. 16 and the state championship game on Feb. 20.

For indoor track and field, regional meets will take place between Feb. 1-6, with the state championship meet offered on Feb. 13. Swimming’s regional competitions are slated for Feb. 3-6 and the state championship meet will go on Feb. 13.

Wrestling would hold regional tournaments from Feb. 1-6 and the season would culminate with state championships on Feb. 12-13.

BREAKING: The @VHSL has approved the Championship + 1 schedule for the high school sports season. Practice for basketball, the year's first sport, is scheduled to start Dec. 7.

This is helpful information and both my local papers covered it nicely today. The one detail they went into that the above does not is the subject of fan attendance. According to these local articles, the attendance will be capped off at 250 as of the moment for both indoor and outdoor activities. So unless there is a change in the governor's mandates, that will mean even football will be limited to that amount. As previously discussed, the staff and essential personnel have to be counted first so that leaves very little room for real "spectators" to attend. As one AD put it "sports will be by invitation only." However they did mention some creative ideas that are being discussed such as live streaming and playing JV and Varsity games in separate gyms in those places that are lucky enough to have two. Buckle up folks......our bumpy ride is going to continue!

NEWS: VHSL Clarification On Governor's Modified Stay-At-Home Directive
The following was released by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) office in Charlottesville Thursday night as clarification regarding Governor Ralph Northam's new modified "stay-at-home" directive announced earlier in the day.
**********
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) clarified the impact of updated statewide measures and recommendations to contain COVID-19 on VHSL sports and activities, specifically, guidelines for wearing facemasks and spectators attending athletic competitions.

During times of substantial COVID-19 activity VDH strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines. There is strong evidence to show that mask use prevents the spread of COVID-19. We also know that participating in sports has both physical and psychological health benefits. Risks from the virus can be decreased if athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators follow public health guidelines.

Additionally, if wearing a mask makes participation in sports difficult, it is advisable not to participate in sports at this time.

“With the support of the Governor’s office and our VHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC), the VHSL is requiring each school to follow the recommendations of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP),” said VHSL Executive Director, Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “There are some sports in which the mask should not be worn, such as cheerleading, gymnastics, wrestling and swim and dive.”

In addition, the VHSL will comply with Executive Order 72 capacity limits:

  1. For sports played indoors, spectators must be limited to 25 persons per field (indoor courts). For sports played outdoors, spectators are limited to two guests per player. The total number of spectators cannot exceed 30 percent of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue.

The current VDH language relative to the wearing of masks may be accessed using the following link:

The VHSL has rescinded its requirement that face coverings be worn during training and competition.
