The VHSL in September will be setting the alignment for the 2021-2022, 2022-2023 seasons... obviously this would not pertain to this fall(if there is a season) but rather the following year. Here are some interesting items to consider...

Atlee, Henrico, Matoaca and Varina can all request to play down in Class 4 due to their changing numbers.

Can you imagine Region 4B with the addition of these schools? The playoff road would just get tougher and tougher.

If Varina goes down to 4B then it’s a wrap for Class 4 Basketball and Football. They are set for the next 4 years.

Don't sell Eastern View, Dinwiddie or Louisa short as those schools are all excellently coached and have a history of competing for titles themselves. No doubt whoever would come out of that region would be battle tested to say the least.

No doubt. Those schools you mentioned will be competitive as always but Varina is set for the next 4-5 years. East End football has some very special kids in the youth league ranks. The parent’s biggest concern is deciding between Marcus Lewis (who is going to be a hell of a head coach) and Loren Johnson, the name says it all. Varina lost a lot of studs this past year but they will be as good this year, offensively at least. Their recruiting is ramping up as well. Traditionally, I know you’re a history guy, even on Varina’s down years, the Messer Rd boys are still very dangerous. I like their chances going to Class 4 to be in the thick of things every year, meaning they’ll be a top 3 team year in and year out.

Well it is still an IF they go to 4. They do not have to, they have the option to remain in Class 5. Will be worth watching.

I am looking forward to some more classic battles between Varina and Highland Springs. It will be interesting to see the Blue Devils under a new regime(albeit familiar faces).

I mean, practically every team that has dropped down since the big reclassification has learned that just because you drop doesn't mean the competition does as well. Some teams have still experienced some success but others, including one big one that everyone thought had umpteen titles in a row coming at them, have not.

There were a lot of good points made but just like when Lake Taylor and LC Bird moved down with the new classifications Varina will come away with multiple titles in my opinion. Now will they win 4-5 in a row I wouldn't bet on that. You always have your Salem coaching staffs that will adjust or kids can have a bad day. But pretty tough not to make them a favorite in football.

This was Varina vs. 2019 Class 4 state champs this year (link below). You’re right in that aspect about teams that have moved down. I personally thought LT or Dinwiddie would win it all every year. Hasn’t happened. Like I stated before, IF Varina decides to drop to Class 4, they are set for the next 4-5 years. The rec leagues in Henrico County are second to none and a good chunk of that talent resides in Eastern Henrico County. There’s no secret why Highland Springs won it 4 years straight and the team who stopped them from 5 happened to be the Varina Blue Devils.

Varina Basketball will be just as much a favorite in basketball each year as well. I’d personally like to see Salem play more 804 teams in football. The Dinwiddie series was really good and I believe this year’s Salem team would match up well with Varina if they played. Of course, I want Varina to stay 5B. 5B will hands down be the best region for football the next 3-4 years with Bedwell at Herm, Perry Jones at Glen Allen, Phillip Sims at Tucker, Manchester, Highland Springs, HOPEFULLY Varina and LC Bird. Can’t see Varina leaving those rivalries behind for Class 4.

According to the numbers, Manchester would move back to Class 6 so their time in Class 5 is winding down.

Yea, I mean I don't think they'd flounder but it's always hard to say how much success a team will see in the POs relative to where they were before.

Not wrong about the talent, though. VA is no longer the 757 show, that region is part of an ensemble cast now with NOVA and especially Richmond doing a lot of work right now.

804 is very strong thanks to its feeder systems and very good coaches. No team in Class 4 are locks when they go up against Salem. The 2016 Dinwiddie and 2017 Louisa (540 but close enough to the 804) were two of the best teams I saw this decade. We all know how both seasons ended. I do believe Varina would be a top 3 lock year in and year out in Class 4 but as you and Dan have both noted, there are some very good programs that would love to knock them off.
