So there are a lot of changes coming between now and next season given the classification and alignment changes that will take effect next school year.

Region 2A will only return 6 of the 8 playoff teams with Thomas Jefferson and Brunswick out of the picture.
  • Central Lunenburg who was the Region 1B champion comes to Region 2A to make some noise.
  • Southampton who was made the playoffs in Region 3A but made it no further than the first round joins this group.

Region 2B will return 7 of the 8 playoff teams in Buckingham, Central Woodstock, Clarke, Luray, Madison, Strasburg & Stuarts Draft.
  • Riverheads who has won 7 straight state titles in Class 1 will be looking to carry that success to this region and Class 2.

Region 2C will return 7 of the 8 playoff teams in Appomattox, Dan River, Floyd, Glenvar, Gretna, Martinsville and Radford.
  • Can Chatham, James River (Buchanan), Liberty (Bedford), Nelson or Patrick Henry step up?

Region 2D will return all 8 playoff participants from 2022 in Central Wise, Gate City, Graham, Lee, Ridgeview, Tazewell, Union and Virginia.
  • Lebanon who moves up from Region 1D will look to breakup this playoff party. If they do... who misses out?

Can Riverheads make it 8 straight state titles or will Graham or Central Woodstock stand in their way?

I think the question is whether Riverheads will stand in the way Graham or Appo, or can King William, Central, Poquoson, or Riverheads knock off Graham or Appo from winning the state title.

Well I can say one thing with absolute certainty. The only party Lebanon will be breaking up might be Marion's cellar dweller party at the bottom of the SWD.

I'm taking in Region C stepping up you mean Patrick County not Patrick Henry.

I didn't think Liberty - Bedford was allowed to go down to 2A? LCA was asked to but petitioned the VHSL to stay in 3A. I thought Liberty- Bedford still qualified as a 3 A school, but requested to go down to 2A and was denied by VHSL? I could very well be very wrong….

What I have, the final plan shows Liberty-Bedford in Region 2C.

I think Liberty-Bedford was moved to region 2C but was denied their request to play in the Dogwood. They'll still play a Seminole schedule. Doesn't make sense to me

I guess it’s like Altavista and WC being 1A and playing in the Dogwood..,
But with having to stay in the Seminole they will be forced to play up 2 divisions when they have to play EC Glass and Amherst who are both 4A schools.

and Jefferson Forest (4A). There's also a lack 1A schools in central VA for WC and Altavista to join up with for a 1A district. Liberty-Bedford has a 2A option (Dogwood) that makes sense.

Yea I forgot JF.
Definitely would make more sense for Liberty to play in the Dogwood.

I recall reading somewhere that it was the Dogwood member schools that voted to deny Liberty into the district.

LCA should stay 3A or above, given their competitive advantage.

Can't say much for the other teams in region D. But, I think Graham will be the team to beat again in 2023. I think Union could make a run at them, possibly. Graham loses some solid players, but they are becoming a factory in the off-season producing football players in the weight-room. Doesn't hurt to have a former NFL linebacker on staff and a phenomenal strength and conditioning coach. Also, former NFL running back Ahmad Bradshaw volunteers some of his time working with the RB's and has a son coming up next year (I think he is 8th grade this year, maybe 7th), so I'm sure he will be hanging around the team to help out. Graham's biggest losses will be along the line of scrimmage, but they have some good looking underclassmen coming up to fill those roles. The skill positions should be off the charts next season, as they return almost everybody. They lost the QB and a top notch receiver, but Graham will have speed to burn and above average athleticism at the skill positions for a 2A team next season. They only team they may not be favored to beat in the regular season next year may be the Bluefield (WV) Beavers, who are returning a ton of talent also.

That's my understanding too. I'd like to know why.

I believe it probably had to do with travel and the non-revenue generating sports that play during the week. It also lets them have the ability to not have to petition to remove them if the numbers at the school increase back to where they once were.

Thomas Jeffersons staff is very good from what I understand and does a really good job. Thomas Jefferson is definitely on the up and up in football. Regardless of what Class they play, I expect some deep playoff runs for them over the next few years.

I agree. Will be a lot harder in Class 3. Hopewell, Goochland, Petersburg should be on speed dial as far as scheduling goes for Tee Jay.
