Not real happy with some of the selections better choices could have been made by a 5th grader.

This one has actually been out for a few weeks, I am waiting to see VHS 2a all state, if it's out I haven't seen it.

Winchester Star All Area team had guys listed from Clarke that made 2A All state, but I haven't seen a list yet, must have got info from Coach, VHSL has not posted 2A or 6A.

It should be a reputation award. Stats should play some part in it, but not solely. Much of stats are based on system and doesnt necessarily speak to whether one player is better than another. Some players don't have quite the stats as others but affect the game and preparing against them way more than someone with better stats.

Sorry I disagree because not ALL these coaches see all these kids play so stats have to play the BIGGEST part or should. Bigger schools get more coverage than smaller schools. Therefore it is ONLY a popularity contest. Stats don't mean CRAP! Everyone who follows these threads knows who I am and made this argument last year. I call BS. Being that the kid I'm talking about is less than 250 yards from being top ten in VHSL career for the state.

In case you don't want to read the whole thing: Total stats are for record books. Postseason awards are to recognize the best players based on the the opinion of people who are more aware of what's out there than some dude's dad in the stands.
(Ex. Timmy Chang or whatever Air Raid QB vs Andrew Luck Pro Style I Form offense in college)

These lists are and never were meant to be about stats, but to recognize who the best players are. You are only worried about one guy's stats against the competition he played against.

And you are wrong about stats not being important or considered, but numbers have to be put in context. This is not the NFL where competition is relatively even across the board and numbers mean more for comparison sake. 2A West covers a range of teams at a competition level from Appomattox (15-0 2 years in a row) to Nelson County (1 win in 2 years).

What did each of those guys on the lists above do when it mattered (1st halves against poor competition) against good competition, good teams, in match-ups against other players that were recognized? If they put up stats then, and made a positive impact towards winning, they deserve to be recognized.

How many kids on teams that weren't that good put up 100 yards on 8 catches and a TD against backups and JV kids when their teams were already down 35 points in the second half? That guy could have 1000 yards, 80 receptions, and 10 TDs on a 2-8 team.

Others may put up 50 yards on 2 catches and a touchdown every other game in the 1st half and then his team runs the ball every play in the 2nd half with the starters relaxing on the sidelines. That guy might have about 500 yards, 20 receptions ,and 5 TDs on a 8-2 team.

If you asked a bunch of football coaches who is better by looking at those stats, and they understood the context, you can be darn sure #2 is getting picked as the better player.

And don't say it is because #2 is on a bigger or better team, at this level of high school (VA 2A) one really good player can make a positive impact to elevate their team to .500 or better record unless they play a really tough schedule.

So everyone quit whining that so and so got left off a list, just be glad that VA has so many divisions and classifications that some of these guys can even be recognized.

You made my case even more compelling. So small schools with weak programs who play bigger schools with twice the number of students shouldn't be considered? It is and always will be a popularity contest. Last year one kid who was a sophomore got all are 2a west underclassman award only had 500 yds and like 4 TDs on the year? Another kid who was also a sophomore put it over 1200 yards and 10 TDs was left off the list
Difference? Well gate city was 2-8 last year ? And the other school went 6-4. This particular kid put up over 200 yards against the 1a state champs. That would be Galax! Also this year Galax decided to double and triple team him this year. Is that respect or what? And Galax has by far the BEST coach in SWVA at any level of high school ball! This particular player also was our teams leading scorer and put up a 5 reception 234 yd. 3 TD game against a 4A school this past year including a 98 yd. a 52yd. and a 27yd TDs in the game! These awards are a bunch of BS and everyone else but the ones who get them know it!

Bigger schools, more coverage, not necessarily since its broken up by division...More successful schools, yes. I agree stats should be a part of it but not as the biggest factor.

Stats should be the biggest factor because not everyone who gets to vote sees or plays against every player worthy of recognition. Not all but at least 80+ percent.

Might as well move your son to Richlands

Phil, man, no one made your point more compelling. All the kids on the 2A list are from small schools. Not a single school there is twice as big as any other. Arguing with stats from playing Carroll County is like saying I am better than Adrian Peterson at RB because the I took on the neighborhood kids 11 vs 1 and they couldn't stop me, but he needs blockers in the NFL. I am not saying the game doesn't count, but they are not an example I would use just because they have more kids in the school. Carroll County would struggle to beat all but a few 1A and 2A schools, if they could beat any.

Bottom line is that more players from better teams make the list because, now follow closely it is almost doctorate level stuff here, BETTER PLAYERS = BETTER TEAMS.

So now you argue that another kid from a bad team made the list, why not my kid from my bad team, he is a special flower and deserves every award anyone else gets because he did some good things. Maybe just everyone thought the other kid was a better player. Again these are postseason honors to recognize who the coaches thought were the best players. Not who was the most used player on their team and put up big numbers because they got the ball a lot.

200 yards while doubled and tripled? Or maybe they played a zone D (not triple coverage) and there was a lot of garbage time stats put up. Score was 46 - 7.

This comes across as picking on the kid and saying he is not a good player, but I have watched his film and do believe he is a good player in 2A, but not so good I see a problem with him not being up there. There are several good players and some of those guys didn't make the list either.

Well when he wins position MVP awards at combines in Charlotte and can take on college level dbs and win I think he may be pretty good. As for the level of competition he plays that's not up to him as he nor I set or schedule for our team. And Carrol he was singled and Galax this year he was doubled the entire game and tripled most of the night. Last year he lit them up for over 200 and as I said previously Dixon is by far the best coach in SWVA and knows how to gameplan.
I know he can play at ANY high school he went to. Last year had a big 4a school in Forsythe county NC. Wanting him to come play for them. Their starting g QB plays d2 ball in Tennessee now. So your criticism is taken lightly since you and the rest have never actually saw him play. As this whole thing started he is better than some of the kids that received the notoriety not all but some and thanks to geography he has to suffer.

In my opinion, you do your son more harm than good by getting on here and complaining. He's a good player, and I'm sure he's a good kid. But I've only seen him once, and after all you had hyped him up to be, he didn't look impressive to me.

I think a touch of humility would go a long way, especially in the perception department. Complaining every time he's "snubbed" or saying he "could play at any high school he wanted to" are absurd claims.

Every team has kids who get left off. Scottie Ball from Richlands isn't even a 2nd team WR for the West, but you don't see anyone getting here and waving their arms screaming about it.

Just my two cents. I know a lot of people are turned off to the kid because of some of the comments on here the past few years.

Just stating facts and yes it may not sit well with some but the truth will stand when the world's on fire. As my point is and has ALWAYS been it's hard to argue with written factual statistical data. That's been my entire argument the whole time. As for you seeing him play I don't know when you did but he's a really good player and very intelligent player too.

When you guys played Richlands last year.

Well with that being said he was a sophomore and he didn't have a bad game. We dont have the Recruiting ability like they do. He wasn't shut down by no one either.

As far as that goes I said he didn't have a bad game didn't say he dominated their defense. Really? As for the rest of the team he is the only person he can control. No we didn't have the players to match up with Richland's entire team. That was the deciding factor.

Also I can't make the same argument this year as I did last year because he didn't have to good of a year. Only 26 receptions for 657 and 12 TDs. But not bad either especially since almost half of his receptions went for a TD.

Ok lets give this a try. I don't know your son, never seen him play, but since stats are the ONLY thing that should matter, lets do a little test to see who you think is better.

Player 1: 69 Rec, 1059 yards, 7 TD

Player 2: 107 Rec, 1023 yards, 6 TD

Player 3: 56 Rec, 1005 yards, 4 TD

Player 4: 69 Rec, 967 yards, 5 TD

Player 5: 66 Rec, 964 yards, 4 TD

Player 6: 78 Rec, 954 yards, 4 TD

Player 7: 65 Rec, 945 yards, 9 TD

Ok, that should be enough. Rank those guys on who is the best players by stats.

Stats are impressive. If these are stats were from last year you'd have an argument. Last year he had 53 for 1234 and 10 TDs. But of these are this year they are MUCH better than the ones who were selected last year.

I wasnt going off of these stats are impressive. I was showing some stats and getting you to say who is the best off of these stats. Its easy, rank these players on the stats provided to say who is the best since you think all that should be considered is stats

7 (TDs)
1
2
3
4
6
5

Can we address how VA gives out "Co-Coaches of the Year"? The All-Region, All-State, whatever they call it is tough because there is so much ambiguity involved. A guy who's won 30 games in a row and 2 straight State Titles should be signed, sealed, and delivered as the "Coach of the Year". Just laughable.

Well since someone answered, I will show how crazy it is to go off of just stats on who the best player is: The players are as follows:

Player 1: Tyrell Williams

Player 2: Larry Fitzgerald

Player 3: Desean Jackson

Player 4: Adam Thielen

Player 5: AJ Green

Player 6: Deandre Hopkins

Player 7: Rishard Matthews

That's deceiving tho bc AJ was hurt and missed like 6 games.

Whoa? I didn't know Fitz dis that good this year. Since i stopped playing fantasy. I stay lost on stats.

That's the point. You can't just go by stats, you don't know the story behind them

In the NFL you can, it's the best vs the best. There's a little leeway depending on your QB/OL, but the pros are much easier to judge by stats.

Really? So Rishard Matthews and Tyrrell Williams are better than DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald, and AJ Green? That is how you ranked them by purely stats

This season? Yes, they had better years.

Well I don't agree with that entirely, but beside the point I am making. It was stated by someone, don't know or remember who, that meant strictly by the stats that so and so was better, which isn't the case. I just used those as an example. There are certainly more than I can use for other positions and other sports as well. Don't know the kid that was brought up and don't know whether he should or shouldn't have made it. My entire point is you cannot go strictly on stats as there and many different things to effect stats

I don't disagree, esp atnthe HS level. Stats are incredibly misleading atnthe HS level

I saw this dab ate last year. The eye test is everything, plus the measurable of height, weight and speed.

Your son is a good player. I've watched lots of video on him but he's the team's only weapon. He gets lots of balls thrown his way. To his credit, he's made some nice catchs but certainly against low tier opponents. He has some potential but Isn't very fast. He's not slow either but next level is iffy.

Keep going to the summer camps. He's on some boards. No doubt. This is when he'll get recruited. I don't think he's exceptional enough to get the March, April June offers but some may come. GL to him.

Remember, next level Coachs don't care one bit about his stats. Neither should you. It's what they see on the field and his 40 time that will impress them. The All-State team means absolutely nothing. You get your name in the paper one day and a plaque. Grade schoolers get that. Get a schollie and you have irrefutable acclamation. And don't worry about what HS team you're on. If you have the goods, you have the goods. Nothing else required. GL.
