Being a coach myself, I was curious about the 4 staffs left. Can anyone close to any of these programs give me some details? Trying to see how many coaches each team has? Does each coach have 1 specific position or do some double dip offense and defense? How long they've been at current school. How long have they coached total. I'm very interested to see how different each staff is as far as experience, age, size, things of that nature. Coaches put in a lot of work, before I hear about details, I would like to congratulate all the staffs still playing for making it this far and wish them best of luck this weekend.

Lake Taylor we have 12 coaches with each one coaching a position for the most part. Coach Sawyer has been at Lake Taylor since 1999 and the core of our staff have been there from the beginning. Some of the offensive staff (Myself, Coach James- QBs, Quinerly-RB, Blount-WR) have the shortest time on staff with myself and Mike being there since 05, Quinerly 2011, and Blount this year. We have Coach Billy Marrow who has been associated with LT since the 70's and former HC who was one of the people responsible for installing the veer still out there helping.

Coach Sawyer has been coaching for a long time as he was the DC at St. Paul's College, then he became the DC at Granby HS in Norfolk, before finally taking the LT job.

As a staff we had our failures in the playoffs losing it seemed like every year close games to Phoebus or Hampton in the first round of the playoffs. It wasn't until 2008 we finally got out of the first round and made it to the regional final where we lost to a great Phoebus team 14-0 at Harbor Park. Next year we come back lose to Phoebus again in the regional final 20-19 in OT as we missed 2 xp's and a FG. We always knew we were right there on the brink of being great, but after losing a heartbreaker to Phoebus 20-17 in 2011 our kids said they weren' t losing to Phoebus again and that set the stage for the 54-0 game in the 2012 regional final vs. Phoebus and we haven't looked back since.

Been a long hard road for Lake Taylor, but those failures made us the program we are today.

Finally someone responds. Over 200 views and nobody has any staff info, shocking no Salem fans gave the run down on that staff. Maybe they aren't happy with my post about JF seating and what not so they aren't talking to me, lol.

Back to the staff though, that's pretty good retention with all but 2 of the 12 coaches having been around for the past 10 years or more. That, IMO, is how you build a successful program. It's hard in this day and age to get coaches to stay around for that long. Obviously we don't get paid well for starters and then most coaches eventually want to be a head coach so when a better job is in front of them they jump ship, which is part of the game. It's pretty awesome to have 12 varsity coaches I bet. We had 6 varsity and 3 jv coaches at CHS. We'll have 7 varsity next year. The more the merrier.

In the Eastern district Mike, what would you say is the average number of varsity coaches on each staff?

Coach Quinerly was the former HC at Maury HS in Norfolk, and came on staff after when his son Nhyre came to Lake Taylor. He came right in and has been a huge addition and while I'm pretty sure he has had opportunities to move back into being a HC he is happy with his situation. One thing is our staff genuinely likes coaching with Coach Sawyer. He's all about family and when my son passed he was right there for me and my wife. That is why he is the Godfather of my 5 year old twin boys. He demands a lot from us, but more than anything he respects our time. We don't meet all times of the night and go 7 days a week. Saturday is family day and he lets us have that day to spend with our families.
As far as staffs go in district I say each staff has anywhere from 6-10 members. I know Ocean Lakes has like 30 coaches it seems.

Consistency on any coaching staff is key. In your first post you mentioned how it took many years for Lake Taylor to get over the hump in the playoffs. I will always find funny when you get these guys posting on here ragging on this team or saying that team can't get it done when they don't realize what goes into winning football games and how hard it is to win consistently. That's what impresses me so much about programs like Lake Taylor and Salem - they consistently finds ways to win. It's gotten to the point that people just expect those two teams to win - a lot of times what is forgotten is what those players and coaches put in to win each and every time they step on the field. As coaches - you obviously do a great job there at Lake Taylor - and coaching is not easy when you have people in the stands and guys on keyboards waiting for any opportunity to tell you blew it, weren't as good as everyone said, etc.

This is why I do respect the success that Lake Taylor has had. For quite a few years there it seemed like you guys were always knocking on the door but could never get over the Phoebus hump. After getting past that and winning a couple of state titles, pretty sure most look at LT as the true top dog in their class. Between that and willing to travel and play just about anybody in the state. I would like to see that Salem - LT rematch this year.

I appreciate the sentiments. NO matter what happens to us this season someone is going to be right. If we lose then we were overrated and not that good, but if we win then we were suppose to win. But there are armchair quarterbacks and coaches at all levels so as long as we keep the blinders on and do what we have to do on the field the chips will fall where they may. It's been a very long and tough run at LT, but the kids expect to win and that is something that only a handful of programs can say. We were down 26-7 against KF and we could have packed it in and said guys its been a good run and walked away, but the kids refused to lose.

I have seen a lot of teams the past 2 years. I was more impressed with Lake Taylor than any other team. Loved their offensive play calling.

Phoebus and Hampton were a thorn in our side. I hate Darling Stadium because we have lost so many 24-20, 20-17, 20-19, games there and then watched as they would win a state title. It's hard to live with the fact that you were right there and when are you going to get over the hump. This quote still sticks with me today:
Afterward Sawyer said then, "It hurts for the kids because you wonder when is their day going to come."
That's where we were as a program like you stated on the brink but couldn't knock down the door. Gotta take care of business Saturday as Courtland RB Greene has some nice comments in the paper, so we will see how it goes.

The Courtland staff consists of 9 coaches. I believe 6 varsity and 3 JV coaches that also assist on Friday nights. Coach JC hall is a graduate of courtland and lead the Cougars to their last state championship in 87. He went on to play at FUMA for a year and then DB at JMU. He started his coaching career in Patrick county as an assistant for his dad. He then moved on to be an assistant at Brooke Point and then to spotsylvania high school under coach Tim Coleman and then back to Brooke point before getting a chance to coach at his alma mater. I believe he started coaching at courtland in 2003 and his teams have made the playoffs in 11 of his 13 years at the school. He is a disciple of the legendary Coach Ken Brown and Tim Coleman as well as OC Paul Neal. His teams run the Wing T on offense and typically a 4-3 on defense. Coaching is in his family his Dad a former HC as well as his DC for several years as well as his brothers Ryan who is on the staff and other brother Brek who has spent time on his staff as well who is now at King George.
His main assistants have been with him for several years with coaches Hodges and Coach Matthais. His staff has wealth of experience and Matthais is also a graduate of Courtland as well.

You loved their offensive play calling? Even though they don't run the spread? That says a lot!

There's a time to pass and a time to run.

The Bible says something about that. "a time to live and a time to die".
