804v757: King's Fork 82, Huguenot 69

Wondering why "The Fork" isn't mentioned in championship conversations in these forums. Strong youth and recreation programs there in Suffolk.
they don't have a history yet; they are gonna get they props if they keep on ballin'.

They have history, albeit not always with the current namesake. Kings Fork has a state title, beat William Fleming in old AAA before the switch to the current 6 classes. They had the PG that went to Cincy, Parker, and the big guy Gardner that could have been D1 in both football and basketball, I think he chose bball, maybe Marquette? Someone more familiar with that area should have the info.

Historically speaking, Suffolk basketball has always been very good. Before Kings Fork was built, Nansemond River and Lakeland were regulars at the state tournament in the 90s as Group AA members. My alma mater Liberty-Bedford had classic games with Nansemond River and Lakeland in 94, 95 and 96 Final Fours. As Suffolk grew in population at that same time, both schools moved up to AAA and Kings Fork was built in the mid 00s. The Fork quickly became the new basketball power from Suffolk.

I'd be shocked if Kings Fork doesn't win the 4A state title this season. Double digit win over Huguenot speaks volumes IMO. I know nothing about them but based on their schedule and results, they seem to be the clear front runner from the 757, an area that always produces a few state championship caliber teams annually.

I view King's Fork as the team to beat this season. They're the top public school in Virginia and top 150 in the nation according to Maxpreps (Which I have a love/hate relationship with). Their only weakness I can see is that defensively their averaging 62 points a game, but that's not a problem when they average 83 points a game. I think it'll take a defensive focused team (Like Norview) to keep them from winning the title, because there's not many teams out there that can put up over 100 points.

Oh trust me I have a love/hate relationship with Maxpreps too. I love looking at the rankings even though I know some of the teams that they have ranked have incorrect scores on their schedule lol.

I agree on the defensive minded team to beat King's Fork. They will be battle tested come playoff time, they will have seen teams like Lakeland and Norview already. Pulling for your Comets from D!

I don’t that much about Kings Fork but they head coach is one of the best in the state. Coach Hite came and coached Petersburg Frank Mason senior year. And he transformed Frank game to another level. People in the central district (not just Petersburg) still love and talk about Hite and he only coached I believe like 2 years before leaving

Thanks for that info. I didn’t know Hite was at KF. He was a young buck when he took over for Bill Lawson, Frank’s senior year. I like Hite’s coaching style, plus he’s coached in the big game before. The Epps kid from KF is the truth!

The East will be a slugfest. With that being said, I call a Kings Fork/Halifax County match up in the final. Halifax is a lot like GW was last year, but younger. They’ll be in the hunt for the next 2 years.

I would have never thought this team would have been this good coming into this season. I thought losing pretty much everybody except DJ and Ferrell would have took three steps back. The entire team looks to be in sync on every play. Waller and freshman Roberts have exceeded any expectations by a mile. Lately even Carter has been improving game by game and is starting to have a big presence inside the paint.

Our scoring margin is +16.7 right now, which has to be a school record of some sort. A lot of the guys on the team are determined to win the title this year, which would have been crazy talk 5+ years ago. Coach Williams and the staff have changed the culture in the program significantly. He’s got more of an old fashioned Coach K or Tom Izzo coaching style, and it works well.

It would be nice to finally see one of the Comet teams get a State Championship for the first time in almost 3 decades, let alone before I have to leave for college.

Who would have thought that Halifax County would be one of the only 2 undefeated teams left in Virginia?

In the end, you just have to take it one game at a time. 4D is going to be a tough region to survive in.

Yessir! That Petersburg team was one of the best teams to NOT win a state championship.. Those 08, 09 and 2010 Petersburg teams were all good with Lawson as well. The young Maxwell brother being out really hurt Petersburg that night. It hurt my soul when Frank fouled out that night and hugged Hite. It was one of the monumental moments in VHSL basketball championship history . Frank left everything he had out there.

Yea all those teams was special even they made the Siegel center they home court with the crowd they brought. Frank had to have one of the greatest state tournament performances that year even losing the championship. He was on a different page when states started
