I was looking at Google Earth to see what the Hurley football field looks like. I could not find what I thought was the actual stadium. I see what looks to be a practice field close to the school, but nothing that I thought was the actual field.

Can you help?

A former player from Hurley was telling me about it. And how it was blasted out of the mountain side. It may not be the prettiest place anyone has ever played, but it makes up for it with its uniqueness. I hope I can catch a game there one day.

Talking about unusual fields, Cape Hatteras! Pushed up next the marsh, it may have the only concession that sells more "Deep Woods Off" that Pepsi. And it is the baseball field, and I think the softball field. The bleachers are moved around as needed. But, hey, they have a football team, most years. Go get em Hatteras Hurricanes!

Thanks guys.

DinwiddieProud, You found what you were looking for!!!! It amazes me that in this day and time the VHSL allows an "official" game to be played on it, whatever it is... It is a fairly cool environment, I guess... It's kinda like one of those places you say, "Been there Done that", don't ever wanna do it again!!!

Actually, I think I was looking at what must be the practice field. For sure, it is the track and field venue. I went back and looked again, at little more carefully. The real field is partially in the shadows in the google earth picture, and I missed it.

Do they make any formal attempt to seat the visitors and home fans at separate ends of the bleachers? I can see where it would naturally take place, just because of habit.

I have mentioned on here many times that I regret that I never had a chance to go to a game at Haysi. I hope I don't have to say the same about Hurley.

Generally, the home team sits in the bleachers to the right of the Press Box looking up from the field and the visitors will sit to the left of the Press Box... it does get a little touchy every now and then being that sometimes the crowds/fans are intermingled, but for the most part it is fairly civilized to have both teams fans so close together... it is just a tough place to have to play and cheer

I'm sure. Especially when a questionable ball spot, or a penalty takes place. I can imagine when a personal foul, like a late hit takes place, is called or not called, it can get rather heated.

But now for the most important question. How are the hot dogs? LOL

By the way, have you ever seen the highlight video the Dinwiddie kids put together back in 2013? It is set to "Here Comes the Boom". It's out there on utube somewhere.

I know this was posted awhile back, but what is the problem with Hurley's field?

Nothing. Just unique. Not many stadiums with seats on only one side. And even fewer I would guess, that have seats on one side only, because they carved the place out of a mountain. On my list of must see places.

Something caught my eye about Thomas Walker the other day. What a LONG way out there, that school is. Further west than the entire state of West Virgnia, and then some.

Understandably, us folks "back east" never hear a thing about the Pioneers.

Thomas Walker is probably a 4 hr ride on a bus for Hurley. Odd that are so far apart, but each are only a few miles from KY.

The most noticeable observation of Hurley"s field is that it is ALWAYS damp/wet... Obviously, due to the fact that the sun rarely IF EVER shines on the Grid Iron which is due to the positioning of the field which doesn't leave many options due to "The Cliff"... Definitely a very unique field!!
Congratulations to Mr. Justice, I hope he does well.. I'm guessing "if" he (which he should) makes the squad they will no doubt red shirt him... What do you think honestjohn60??

I would think he will be Redshirted, but it is an honor just to be invited to walk on.

To have the opportunity to play sports at the college level, regardless of the school or division, is an honor. To play at a major D1 school is that much more of a privilege. My very best to this young man.
