Grounded Falcons Remain Un-Defeated by Out Running the G-Men 57-47

The Abingdon Falcons (5-0) felt the impact of Hurricane Joaquin on Friday night. Mother Nature grounded the Falcons from the usual spread and shred air assault as the Falcons were forced to the running game. Matthew Fulton (jr) carried the load for the Falcons and kept the home team’s perfect record intact with the high scoring game over the Graham G-Men.

While other teams in Virginia either played their game on Thursday or postponed until Monday, the Falcons and the G-Men kept their game as scheduled. Mother Nature was definitely in charge Friday night with a constant blustery wind and the threat of rain. The Falcon’s fast paced offense was slowed by the weather. Coming into the game, Junior Quarterback Jake Sturgill, rand the spread offense with precision while passing touchdowns to six different receivers.

With the threat of the wind causing havoc, the Falcons lined up in the spread but they didn’t pass, they handed the ball off to Fulton who carried the load for 233 yards on 23 carries and 5 touchdowns. Sturgill added 151 yards rushing on 16 carries and 2 scores. Abingdon attempted 13 passes.

Graham’s potent offense was paced by junior running back Jamoyra Cousin and his 181 yards rushing on 22 carries and quarterback Roman Workman who ran for 72 yards and passed for 200 yards and accounted for six touchdowns.

The two teams traded scores until early in the fourth quarter when the Falcon defense lead by junior LB Carter Counts and senior defensive lineman Justin Fannon and senior linebacker Tyson Roberts were able to force a three and out by stopping Cousin and putting lots of pressure on Workman. The Falcons forced a punt that was fielded at mid-field. Sturgill faked the handoff to Fulton and scampered around the left side for a 33-yard score that gave the Falcons at 42-28 lead with 10:51 remaining in the game.

The G-Men scored two touchdowns late in the game after the Falcons pulled the starters from the game.
