Just about time to strap it on guys, and get down and dirty. It should be another exciting year in Virginia for high school football. I am sure the kids are getting excited, as well as the coaches.

What teams will be contenders in D1? Will Riverheads and Essex continue to dominate in the East? Will GW, Galax, and Chilhowie battle it out for the West?

It want be long before the first scrimmage folks, are you guys ready for some football?

Chilwar I believe it will be Galax and Chilhowie in west and maybe a couple of more sleepers.

Scags, Chilhowie should be pretty good as they return most of the team they had last year. Were they over looked by some, or were they that good? We will see. No doubt that Galax will be tough again. GW is always good. Some others to watch in region D would be PH, Grundy, Eastside, Hurley and JIB. Not sure about region C other than GW and Galax, but RR is always a tough game, and don't forget about Narrows and Auburn.
Just a few early thoughts.

Chilwar and others out that way, I plan to go back out to Galax in late July to visit our daughter. If time permits, I'm planning on venturing further west. I have no particular itinerary except to stop by some of your high schools so I can take a picture of your football field and be able to say, "yeah, I've seen their field!"

I would like very much to cross paths with you guys just to shake hands and put a face to the name. I'll keep you posted about my plans if any of you would like meet my wife and myself.

If your trip involves using I-81, Riverheads could not be any more convenient in terms of its relationship to the highway. You could take your picture and be back on the road in five minutes.

Dinwiddie, Chilhowie is at exit 35 I-81. Before the trees grew up along side 81, you could see the field from 81.
Marion can easy be seen from 81 near exit 45, and Patrick Henry stadium can be seen at a distance from 81 at MM 28, after exit 29, before the E&H College exit going west/south. If you have navigation , no problem finding most fields or stadiums in far SWVA. Best of luck.

I might add, Abingdon, John Battle, and Virginia High stadiums are not far off I-81 just down the road.

GW will be lucky to win six games this year. They have good skill players but no line. It will be 4-5 years before GW is really good again.

Thanks guys, I'll find all of these places, but not from 81. I avoid it like the plague. I'll just wonder the "roads less traveled". They will get me there, albeit a little slower. But my nerves will still be intact!

I'm thinking about making it one of my retirement goals to personally lay eyes on every active high school football field in the state, and as many of the "retired" fields as still exist. I know I'll probably not accomplish this, but what the heck, I think I might try.

Dinwiddie, I hope you are successful in getting to all the fields in SWVA. Use highway 11W or the old Lee highway. It runs next to I81 and is a lot less traveled. As for the fields in the coal fields, well you are on your own. Good people, good football, and Good luck, My Friend in coal country.

Well, you know that Chilwowie is near the top of my list of places to visit. I'll talk to Coach Mills because of his history from there, and see if he has anyone that he wants me to track down and offer his personal greetings. For sure, I hope to meet you.

A great place to visit is the stadium for Union, which used to be Powell Valley and Appalachia and located in Big Stone Gap.

Lots of history there. Bullitt Park
Thanks Gunz. When I start my travels, I'm going to post the area I plan to visit, and the schools/fields I have identified along my path. I'm hoping that folks will reply back with recommendations and directions, even the name of a contact at the school that can give me a little insight, (and access if needed). And also, I'm hoping folks will share stories and history with me. I envision cataloging this type of information along with a picture or two, to share with anyone interested.

I also hope to gather information about stadiums/fields in the areas that I visit that no longer exist. In some cases these former high school fields are still around as a middle school field, but sadly, some of the great fields along with most of their Friday night memories are gone forever.

This may sound weird, but I equate old schools and their athletic fields to cemeteries. A cemetery represents "lives lived". To me, an old school does too. I know that many of my happiest childhood memories are associated with my long gone elementary school. I can claim a lot of good memories from my old high school as well.

There is a vibe, a sense of something I can't describe, when I visit old schools or old football fields. I guess I'm feeling the "lives lived".

I only played one year of football in high school, and that on the JV team. But, from just that one year, I have many, many good memories. For many of you, you played middle school through varsity. I dare say that not a one of you regrets playing the game, and the multitude of memories you have, therefrom.

I certainly couldn't give you any information on Union or Bullitt park, just went the one time, and it's a LONG trip from here, but it was very interesting and I know there is a lot of history there.

A few years ago I had counted it up, and while still not a big percentage I had been to around 50 different stadiums
