the post about W&L possibly not getting a new football stadium when its new school is constructed got me to thinking about this topic. Just some facts or non-facts. All of these places have received upgrades through the years and some of the best fields are at Essex, Lancaster and Northumberland. Essex, however, is in desperate need of upgrades at its facility and CB could use some as well. At least CB upgraded its lighting a few years ago.
Here we go with when football started to be played at these locations:
CB: Monroe Park. Actually no clue but guessing early 70s is when it opened? Maybe in late 60s?
Essex: 1976. Still use same wooden light poles and some say the bulbs are the originals!!!
Lancaster: I'm pretty sure 1976.
Northumberland: Just a few years ago (2007 or 2008??). Crazy I can't recall this one and I know most of the others!
Rappahannock: 1978 or possibly 1977. Pretty sure 1978 is correct.
Washington & Lee: I'm gonna say in the 1960s but don't know the exact year. This why it would be crazy to make the school's football team continue playing there IMO.
Some other facts:
Essex played its first six seasons (1970-75) at Tappahannock Elementary School which was once Tappahannock High School. That was a nice field that was erased when a new Tappahannock Elementary School was constructed.
Lancaster played its first six seasons at Lancaster Middle School which was formerly Lancaster High School.
Rappahannock played its first eight seasons at the old Warsaw High School stadium.
Any corrections to any of this information are most welcomed

I really hope that those folks in power in Westmoreland County will reconsider and divert some funds to a new football/soccer stadium for the Eagles, which will also help the baseball diamond etc.

W&L has some excellent coaches and an outstanding longtime AD and educator in Malcolm Lewis. He and his people have given so much to their kids and community.

Sometimes those in power have no clue what is going on (I have zero details in this specific case, just making a generic observation).

The Best Schools in Virginia and across this Nation have outstanding academic and athletic facilities and strive for success in both. Think those institutions who compete for the Wells Fargo Cup....

If you want to attract new people to your community and keep the students you already have, you must at least have nice and updated facilities (academics and sports) that are not embarrassing.

It is that simple.....yet sometimes it is beyond the understanding of some "highly educated" folks (again a generic observation from reading national and state newspaper articles etc.).

A lot of schools going to turf I would think that every school would want to go that way get the community behind the effort and raise money and get the county to help you out this is the only way it will happen. If you going to get anything done pretty much got to do it yourself. I wish Riverheads had a turf field but I think we like tall grass lol

I was told Riverheads had a donor a couple years ago that had everything lined up for a turf field at no or very little expense to the school and they were turned down.

Interesting....it's all about power and control.

At Essex, many folks fought like heck for better facilities for many years -like since 2002 or so. The group was told in like 2004 it would soon be done. It never was.

Concerned citizens also offered to fix/build/pay/fund raise to improve the facilities themselves. They were turned down. Many gave up. A few continue the fight.

Good luck to all.
