Since it seems like EVERYONE has something to say about Riverheads, and keeps turning other threads about others into dissing the Red Team, let's just use ONE thread to do all the talking you want.

I'll start, Riverheads is a great coached, great team who is consistently good. I dislike them as a rival, but they have done nothing wrong in my book

I've followed them from afar for years, and I love the discipline and teamwork that their teams show. In a majority of their games, the other team is probably more athletic, but they are so fundamentally sound, that they make up for that. To me, Casto is one of the best coaches in the state, at any level.

IMO one of the reasons Riverheads is successful in the playoffs is the competition in the regular season. There district are 2A teams except for SJ. 8 out of 10 of there regular season games are 2A teams. So when the playoffs roll around there isnt much they havent seen speed and size wise. I cant imagine any team this year in 1A with anybody faster than Evans of ER or Rivenburg of Gap or Hevener and Norman of Wilson or tougher than Lawler of Lee. Those are some of the backs they have faced this year off the top of my head. I maybe out in left field with that analogy just my opinion.

I agree with you 100% about the Red Team. I feel they are a measuring stick of high school football, not just 1A. After getting to see them first hand last year in the state final, I was amazed how they looked like a well oil machine. They operated like a military unit. Saying all of that, I don't think the trophy should be handed to them in week one or even week 11. Yes they are in contention every year but there are some teams out there that can compete with them and dare I say, beat them in 1A. I also understand "to be the man, you have to beat the man".
No matter if the other teams are in weak districts or regions. Only 2 can make it to the finals anyway. But all in all Riverheads are top notch, from the players to the coaches.

I posted this in another thread but just in case it was missed, here is this Riverheads' fan's take on why we are where we are today..........

1) Great coaching. When you have the same staff for 20 years or more, you develop consistency and a strong fan base.

2) Strong Little League Program..From a very early age they are learning the system so they are ready when their time comes.

3) Strong competition in the area..For MANY years, Riverheads took its lumps against mostly larger schools. In fact I think it was not until after Casto arrived that our school finally had a winning overall record. So losing big to schools such as Harrisonburg, TA, the old Lexington, etc. toughened us up.

There is just more talent in southern Augusta Co. Every year more and more families move near Greenville . At least ones with football in mind ! The coaches have been lucky to get great players year after year . Great players make coaches look good .

Couple constants around here this time of year ,leaves are falling, thanksgiving is almost here and big red getting ready to make another playoff run

I am a die hard supporter of the Red team but I do attempt to be objective. I think the team has made great strides this year and may, and I stress may have what it takes to win this year. I am also gonna say that there are 4 maybe 5 teams that can put it together and win in December.

I have never went into the season thinking that RH was the clear favorite and should be revered for even gracing a field. I do however think every year that if the young men buy into the system and believe the we versus me mentality of what is taught, they will give themselves a chance to compete on the field and understand how to become a productive adult in the real world. That’s all a community can ask if it’s athletic programs.

There have been several comments about how disciplined the Red team is and I would agree. They have fun but none of them hold their self in higher regard than their teammates. That’s not to say there are not plenty of schools that have the same approach and some wonderful young men playing for them.

We have been blessed as Longtime mentioned with stability at the coaching level and community buy in to the point of being rabid, lol.

All in all, I personally love when the area teams do well and challenge each other. I would submit that per population density, the best football in the state is played in Augusta county. I could only imagine if there were two less schools and the others moved to higher divisions.

You don’t have to like the school, the coaches, the offense that is ran, or the few knuckle head fans that enjoy pulling chains But you can’t take away the 5 times they won the last game of their season by lifting a trophy that 30ish other teams wanted. You can try to tarnish it with accusations but the record books don’t have asterisks beside it. 5 time 1A State Champion is what it says as of now. I hope that total changes a few more times before this run is over.

Yeah I know it's probably like varsity blues but Franklin they play best on the road. When the chips are down its game time the gonna play to the end I wish Ford was able to play but we got to make it out the region

I like new teams every year . It's been a few years since we played the Broncos . Pullin
for you guys . Just remember when you come over the Blue Ridge and into the valley the water taste better ! Could be something in the water in Greenville !?!?

IF(notice the capital letters)we are able to make it hosting a team from Region A, the atmosphere will be electric. A VAPreps staff writer did an article on a regular season game with Wilson during their run a few years ago. I can’t seem to find it but it was an interesting take from someone that was impartial.

I would like to think the crowd is welcoming in victory or defeat. The food is good and school is easy to find. With luck and good play we will see someone from out east soon enough.

The food is NOWHERE near as good as Stonewall, but neither is Drafts. Everyone should adopt Stonewalls concessions

I think most food is good food, most concession food is pretty good, but yea Stonewall is worth the trip for it.

And now I am bummed, just realized SD is not playing them next cycle :(
Its a shame the way that program has fallen on hard times. Havent been there in years. The food was good last time I was there. That would be the only reason to go because you definitely wouldnt make that drive for a football game. Riverheads had some great games with them over the years in the regular season and the playoffs. If they dont start finding some success soon I feel that program might go the way of Park View and Manassas Park.

If that trend continues im sure 2a is in the future, must be great to have a sustained growth in these times of small town communities going away.

Here is an idea - I think we should go ahead and put Riverheads in Salem.

Have the winner of Region A play the winner of Galax and Chilhowie (or someone else if there is an unlikely upset in C or D).

Now where to play the game? Maybe Salem as well.

The winner plays Riverheads for the title (that way we get the best possible opponent for Riverheads to hopefully avoid another blowout).

Its a blowout no matter who they play, sorry 1a dosent have the answer or manpower to beat Riverheads.

This is what happens when you game the system and ensure that you report as a 1A team when your school is clearly a 2A.

Riverheads is well under the 1A enrollment. Maybe you should show evidence that there not instead of just making false statements that you cant back up.

So thorough of a 1st post, something we read here once a month. And I strongly dislike Riverheads, but this enrollment thing is WAY beyond exhausting
Exactly how Franklin feels when people constantly bring up classless fans and a bunch of thugs year in and out..lol

They are not in Staunton they are in the county about 10 miles south of Staunton in southern Augusta county. I graduated from there my kids graduated from there. They havent added on to the school or brought in trailers since I graduated 30+ years ago so the school has had basically the same enrollment since I have been there with the exception of 2011-2014 when they had a larger than normal freshman class and had to move to 2A those 4 years. After that class graduated they went back to 1A. But Gunz is right the argument is getting old. I havent seen a single post on here complaining about Northampton which has the largest enrollment in 1A. Like I said in a previous post Gotta love the haters!!!!

That seems odd considering VHSL adopted the current system in 2013. Before that it was divisions that often pitted schools of vastly different sizes against each other.

Are you from the Augusta county area? If not then you really have no leg to stand on with regards to addresses. I live in Stuarts Draft and across the street people have Waynesboro addresses, even still in Stuarts Draft by miles. One particular road in between SD and Greenville (where Riverheads is) up until last year was completely divided between the 2 schools. One side of road was SD, other side Riverheads. So your neighbor right across the street would be at a different school.

I dont understand all this animosity for them, unless you are a direct rival. I can understand not liking them, I certainly dont, but my school was a direct rival. Other areas of the state occasionally play them. So the hate should certainly be better applied to a direct rival.

IF they are cheating, then that is terrible and dumb on them as a school. Schools get their budgets based on number of kids, so the ones who think they are cheating are saying they are losing money for the educational system to win a championship.

And also a FYI, Robert E Lee, the high school in Staunton has also dropped in classification in last 4 years, so how do you explain that with your vast knowledge of the area?

Also, no it didn't get changed in 2013. It has been split differently for a long time. In 2017, it went back to 4 regions.

Like I said, I strongly dislike them, but dont try to lie to prove a point. Come with FACTUAL information
