Amherst Job

Wikki do you know if the fools hiring these coaches have attempted to talk to guys like Alonzo Mathews, Mike padgett an other who have been in program

Yes there where many years he had way more talent that the record showed. I'm not say he should won state but he had talent that could have been contenders.
Alonzo knows what credentials he needs. Some assistant coaches weren’t interested. My opinion and the consensus was hire an interim because it wasn’t enough time and then in 2019 you would have enough time to get more interest and a great coach

That's a lot different than running a program into the ground. This coach or admin just ran this program into the ground. Alonzo isn't a teacher and is a great guy but that doesn't equal a head coach..imo. Padgett has 0 interest in the job.

I know you ask Wikki but Alonzo was never offered a 2nd interview..Alonzo was back by Abell and had Abell playbook instructions on a winning program..

Nope, Abell back the kid that was a former safety at Amherst and at Richmond. Not saying he didn't want Alonzo to have the job...that's what I heard.

Trust me I really would love for Alonzo to have the job and so do many of the fans. I messaged him during the process and he said he could only pray. Alonzo learned from the best

Wikki I don't think he is ready but I'm willing to go through the learning process with him..He is trusted and has establish a relationship with many people in Amherst. The problem is Curd doesn't give a rat ass about the Amherst football program.

My opinion is if whatever profession you choose if that's what you want to do then you do the necessary requirements to do that. You shouldn't apply for jobs when you don't have the necessary credentials. But if those credentials aren't posted under said job then the problem is higher up.

Porter is the worst hire I've ever seen and that's why I never once said anything good about him on this board.Few days ago I said the 1st 5 games would be interesting..Thats only cause I knew he wouldn't make it.

Was Porter just a bad fit for the program or what did he do to get fired or have to resign after just two weeks?

Porter is a bad fit for any program..He needs to be a strength coach and nothing more.I could go into detail on the stuff he did and accused of doing but I feel like some people on this site might get angry talking about a coach to that degree.

This whole situation was a bad deal, from the timing of Phillips leaving, to the hiring process, and now having to adjust again 2 weeks before the first game. Amherst kids, assistant coaches, and community deserved better.

Wow sorry to hear that Lineheart. As DP mentioned earlier it sounds like the powers that be didn't do their homework very well before making this hire and that's inexcusable.

That who I'd like to see get the job if he's even interested. Let alone he being a good coach an part of the winning tradition. He's a great guy all around would be a excellent role model for the plays.

I agree with you Salem, it hasn’t been good. Should have hired an interim until they had time to get a great coach. Amherst has a great program and community support. Not sure how this will end but I surely hope that this kids get to play football. I know the fans will support them but I know some that are really angry right now

We couldn’t ask for a better guy

I don't think we have anyone that can handle the HC job right now..Our best coaches either quit or found other jobs..Maybe the best bet is to not have a HC this year and let the coaches split the duties.I know they got a few parents helping out right now.

I would like that but I would go Dewayne Smith over him right now.

Amherst all state linebacker and all conference linebacker at Richmond. Won state championship as a coach at Richmond private school. If anyone could make a quick turnaround at Amherst it would be him. Cant talk ole boy outta Richmond though!

Figured, just making sure.

I have no knowledge of the procedure that Amherst follows when hiring coaches, but my guess is that it's similar to what Dinwiddie might do?

The criteria for the job is established.
The open position is advertised.
Applications are first reviewed by HR to be sure the applicants meet the requirements of the advertised position.
The AD, and other Administrative personnel review the applications, and select the applicants that will be interviewed.
An interview panel is established, which will almost certainly be led by the AD, and include the Principal.
The panel makes their recommendations
Perhaps follow up interviews are conducted.
The AD makes his/her recommendation to the Principal, who then makes his/her recommendation to the School Board.

Only the School Board has the authority to hire or terminate a school employee.

If Amherst follows a similar path, there is plenty of culpability to go around.

That is how I understand it to be exact

How many people were on the committee if they had one? If there were red flags you would think someone would have saw one waving at some point before he got hired.

Thanks DP for the information..Speaking in general, when is it ok to let someone with a record coach our children?..Is there a certain amount of years that has to go by?Is it ok to give 2nd chances? You seem to be well respected and would love to hear you opinion on the matter..

I'm obviously not DP, but I think it depends on what kind of record, and how long it has been or what age the person got that charge.

Unhinged people shouldn't even be S&C coaches. They let that happen at Maryland and a kid is dead because of it. You blackball these people from the sport.

A lot should be picked up on during a background investigation. Someone’s integrity can easily be picked apart based off a proper background check

IMO and after reading this article it was obvious he had issues. He never stayed in a position for very long and moved all over in 15 years of coaching

Based on an allegation of a possible past record in this thread let me say school systems have policies regarding required criminal background checks. I know that VDOE requires a child abuse check be done.

The VHSL also has a similar requirement regarding felony records and child abuse. If the said coach previously committed a violent crime, child abuse or sex crime and it was missed its, because he was from out of state and they hired him before the background check came back. If they took a risk to get him on board quickly then someone in the administration screwed up royally and needs to be terminated. It took me 38 days to get a background check done on my most recent hire and this was basically a lateral transfer within state government.

That's a tough question to answer without specific information. The types of things that Navy listed in his post above, I think we all agree, no second chance, with respect to coaching kids. Conversely, if it was a relatively minor offense, and sufficient time has past, it can actually be used by a coach to show the kids how one stupid decision can wreck your life.

If a potential hire had a Single DUI on his record 25 years ago, should this preclude his employment? How about 10 years ago? 5 years? If that DUI was at a traffic stop on News Years Eve, and he registered .08, does this matter? How about if he was 18 years old then? Suppose he was 18, but the DUI arrest was a result of a single car accident with no injuries?

Suppose he ran a stop sign and caused a wreck with fatalities, at 18 years old, and was stone sober?

As you can see, there are a million variables, and no single answer applies.

Some judge or politician once said, "I can't tell you what porn is, but I know it when I see it."

So, I can't tell you where the line is on a questionable background check, but I know it when I see it!

What previous admistrators said would have been enough red flags for me. Seemed like nothing positive was said. And looking at his track record, thanks but "no job offer for you" :)

Had a similar situation going on this past month with a background check I did. Took forever for what seemed like an easy background.
