If my memory is correct, Giles has defeated 5 teams in the regular season that went on to win state championships in that season. The teams were Blacksburg, Glenvar, Galax, Tazewell, and Covington. Am I right about that? That's pretty amazing if so. Probably take a lot of research to find out if any other team has done that as many or more times. Anyone?

That's a tough one and I couldn't have come up with the 5 you did. I would have guessed Giles had beaten GW on their championship run, but they did not even play. Floyd gave the Maroons their only loss that year.

I'm a firm believer in "wake-up games". Sometimes it's a close call in an undefeated season. Sometimes you just get whipped. It's important for champions to feel the sting of defeat.

Take a look at Salem, Gate City, Powell Valley. I would bet these schools have beat at least 5 state champions over their times.

Powell Valley Wins over State Champion Appalachia in 1989,1994, 1997. Win over GC in 1997 as GC won the state title. Powell Valley beat state champion Jonesville in 1988. That's 5 there for Powell Valley.

Salem-Andrew Lewis has done it twice to Blacksburg and twice to Graham and did them both in one time in the same season.
1962-Salem-Andrew Lewis over Graham. Graham won state title in AAA.
1989-Salem-Wins over Graham and Blacksburg, both Graham and Blacksburg won titles and Blacksburg beat Salem the second time they played in the playoffs that year.
2016-Salem over Blacksburg, and of course, both went on to win state titles
1992-Pulaski County, State Champions, lost to Salem 29-22.
That's 5 there for Salem.

I guess the big difference is the Giles wins all came in years that Giles did not win state, so that's what I thought was most impressive, beating state championship quality teams in years in which they were not.

Technically the reason Graham won the 62 title was because Andrew-Lewis had to forfeit that win because of an ineligible player, or so I've read.

If you go to www.swvasports.com and ask this question I'm positive a guy with the screen name Bluefield_Researcher will be able to give you all the information you need. He's compiled most schools, if not every school in Virginia and West Virginia's yearly record with the name of the head coach for each year the school has had a football team. I'm almost positive he wouldn't have a bit of trouble answering this.

There's a 16+ page thread of just his comments on swvasports football category detailing every school's yearly records. It's definitely worth a look no matter what part of the state you're from. If anyone has any question having to do with VA high school history he'd be the first person to consult.

Salem/Andrew Lewis 1962 win over Graham
Salem 1989 win over Blacksburg
Salem 1989 win over Graham
Salem 1992 win over Pulaski
Salem 2002, win over Heritage-Lynchburg
Salem 2009 win over Northside
Salem 2016 win over Blacksburg

That's 7 times for Salem, and 6 of those 7 times Salem did not win a state title.

Salem didn't play Heritage in 2002. I don't think that the two teams have met in the regular season since Salem was AAA.

In the opening game of the 1999 regular season, Salem defeated Brookville 40-14. The Spartans finished 14-0 as the AA-D4 champions while the Bees went 11-3 en route to the AA-D3 championship.

Salem also beat Blacksburg in 1977, when the Indians went on to claim the old AA crown.
