We had the number one ranked team IMO get beat in overtime this week and JM starting to do what I expected starting to get better as the season goes on. Still one of the weakest dist. I have seen as long as I have watching the district. We have two excellent teams one on the upswing and three that are at the bottom of the barrel. Lets see how I see them after week three?
# 1 CHANCELLOR: Yes they lost but they lost to a pretty good EV team in OT. From all I read and reports from fans that went they dropped too many passes and the defense didn't play very well. Well that good EV offense had a lot to do with the defense deficiencies. I have seen the Chargers twice this year in a scrimmage and did the TV game last week against Ponax and I saw a lot of good athletes on defense and I think its a matter of time before Oliver has them jelling. No question that QB and all those exceptional receivers are capable of taking them a long way in the playoffs. They seem to have found a very capable back in Armstead who rushed for 220 yards against EV and that is the only question about Chancellor I had before the season! Now if the defense come around I think they will see the Chargers will be a contender to go along way this year.
# 2 KG: The foxes are now 3 and 0 and my good friend coach Jeff Smith has them rolling BUT! I considered ranking them number one but they just haven't played any caliber of team that Chancellor has. Liberty was a little down this year and without their starting QB Joe Glass and talented receiver Kris Leach they was reduced to a second class team. Don't get me wrong the Foxes are a good team headed for the playoffs and this is a team that good JV programs are making them more competitive than KG teams of the past. Jordan Alley is a great back and the QB is getting better each game. Its been a long time since the foxes had a defense good enough to win a state championship but this just might be the team. As the season goes on and they play better teams we shall see how they shape up! I am happy for coach Smith and the foxes. It couldn't be happening to a better guy!
# 3 JM: As I stated earlier in the year the Jackets are getting better but they also haven't played other than Dinnwiddie any very good teams. I have watched them on TV every week and saw them in a scrimmage against a good MV team and they have talent there. They still have Quickness especially in the backfield but with a young sophomore QB in Davis they are still growing. I knew with Serbay and that fine staff they would get better and they seem to have! Lets see against better competition! One thing I think will probably be their downfall against better competition is Davis has a good arm but not very mobile. We are use to seeing in the past a very quick and mobile QB with running ability and it looks like Davis doesn't fit that scheme imo. Looking forward to the young Jackets improving and would not rule them out by seasons end as a playoff team.
# 4 COURTLAND: Hard to judge this young team with all their skilled people gone and playing a murderous schedule. This is a good program with puppies starting everywhere. They are in a rebuilding year and I know JC will turn it around in a couple years. It looks like their defense is decent but right now their offense is lacking especially at QB. The two TD's they got was against the Louisa back ups in the 4th qtr. White is just a puppy but is a good enough back that they will build around. Next couple years the Cougars will be the old Cougars of old!
# 5 Caroline: How can you judge a team like this that continues to play murderous competition! I will give the Caroline AD some useful advice! The two year scheduling cycle ends this year so please next year schedule teams you have a chance to be competive with so you can start building your program. If you schedule teams like Dinwiddie this program will never progress! Spotsy did that last two years in dropping people like Ponax and Louisa so they need to do the same. Getting beat 70 to 0 will not accomplish anything but injuries and players quitting or not coming out at all! Still have a shot at Spotsy to get a win but I wouldn't count on that.
# 6 SPOTSY: Things don't seem to be getting any better for AL Johnson at post oak! They lost Friday night to a team I thought they had a chance to beat but got blown out by a weak Culpeper team. I saw this coming in the scrimmage I saw them play as they have very little talent and speed or size. Their defense is porous and gives up big plays! Looks like Caroline or W@L are there only chances to win. Hang in their boys from post oak none of this is your fault since Tim Coleman left and not decent coaching along with the unfortunate hazing incident causing you to lose most your talent it is just too much to overcome!
Well there we go about a third of the season gone already and everything about the same in the teams as the district games start we will get down to the nitty gritty and have a better idea who is weaker or stronger than we thought. one thing we need to add to the equation is the injury bug! Most the battlefield teams have very little depth unlike the bigger commonwealth teams and a key injury may make a good team below average team! HS football and Friday night lights get out and root on your favorite team!
