Another season is about to get underway and its time for my annual rankings of the battlefield dist! remember this is only my opinion as I have no horses in the race other than my heart bleeding red white and blue for my alma mater Spotsylvania! There used to be the big four at the top of the district but now its big two with a third ready to challenge the big two for the district title. remember the district means nothing anymore but the teams seeing each other at the mall for bragging rights! so here we go voice your opinions if you think I am off base with the picks.
# 1 COURTLAND COUGARS: No surprise here! the cougars are loaded for bare with almost the entire backfield back with the loss of ANTON JENKINS but replaced by fred. Christian school Rb BLAIR LAWSON a speedster along with talent backs VICTOR GREEN and GEORGE CHEETHAM and a qb that is also a great receiver JABARI ALLEN. the o line is anchored by the huge and talented BEN BEATTY and a little bigger CODY SULLIVAN. Their receiving corps is full of talent with te DJ ADAMS and wr JEREMY HOKENSON and NICK GRANT. If a field goal is needed they have two excellent kickers in HOKENSON and DAKODA WOODWARD who filled in for the injured HOKENSON last season.
The defense will be strong also this year as it has let the cougars down in the past in big playoff games in the past! the d line is anchored again by BEATTY and CHEETHAM. the linebackers GREEN a VA. TECH full ride, JASON HOKENSON will anchor a defense that will have to perform well to advance deep in the playoffs. the db's are talented lead by JEREMY HOKENSON, DAKODA WOODWARD and NICK GRANT. one knock against this very talented team is if you notice they have a single A syndrome, playing many players both ways. this may hurt them if the advance deep in the playoffs.
this is a very talented team that plays some tough games at the beginning of the season. they play massaponax, riverbend, Louisa, and liberty and those programs are big and physical and may take a toll on the cougars. but they have the talent to win all the games but it aint going to be easy. plus they have tough JM and a much improved chancellor to play in the district. if that aint bad enough if they advance and want to take a state title their will be no weak sisters to play as the road to the class 4a title this year will be power houses LAKE TAYLOR, DINWIDDIE AND SALEM. JC HALL is a excellent coach and if he can pull this off with his schedule and these playoff teams he will be by far the coach of the year! GOOD LUCK JC and the COURTLAND COUGARS!
# 2 JM YELLOW JACKETS: As the free lance star came out today they are naming the top 5 teams and they have picked #5 and 4 and 3 and with # 2 and 1 probably being ponax and courtland not in that order I can imagine my old buddy Serbay is licking his chops! if JM is not picked in the top 5 you guess this will be posted on the JM locker room walls? knowing him like I do he wants it that way as this will be a motivation factor for the JACKETS this season.
Well let me say this battlefield district this is a excellent football team. no there is no great qb like JAY SCROGGINS but this teams backs and o line are much better than last year. their defense will be much improved and as always the JM team is full of speed. this line imo is as good or better than the one that let ERIC BATES rush for a school record yardage. they are big and aggressive lead by BRANDON MARTIN,WADE OLSEN,IAN JEFFERS AND CODY HEDRICK. their running backs are better with the addition of W@L transfer DJ WELDON and returnees JUWAN DAVIS, VINCENT SMITH and GARY BOXLEY all capable backs. new offensive coordinator DON JOY doesn't have great deep threat KEYSHAWN JOHNSON but his returners are plenty good enough to tote the mail to the house. DARIUS LEACOCK and long and lanky JASON BOLEY are ample fill ins for the graduated JOHNSON.
Now for the qb situation no one can fill the shoes of SCROGGINS at passing but I can tell you who can fill his shoes in running and ever quicker and better! The RIVERBEND brother transfers MATT and AJ FELTON are much quicker than SCROGGINS. MATT looks like the best passer of the two but none as good as SCROGGINS. with the good receivers the FELTONS need only to get the ball close to the receivers for them to come down with the catch!
the JM defense may be better even without ANTONIO WYNN COLEMAN who transferred. de EDWIN YOUNG LB MATT ABLE and GARY BOXLEY anchor a defense bringing back 7 starters. their db's will be ball hawks ANTWAN GRAY, JASON BOLEY leading the way. the defense looked a lot quicker this year and in the scrimmage against MT. VIEW stuffed the run unlike last year. just the experience of playing together another year should help the jackets defense this year.
IMO this JM team is only a hair lesser than COURTLAND but don't count a SERBAY coached team out from running the table in the district this year. they can be that good with that talent. they have a tough DINWIDDIE team first and than a good ESSEX team before COURTLAND and CHANCELLOR. the schedule is in their favor for no less than 7 and 3 or 8 and 2. but with power house teams like PHOEBUS, MAGNA VISTA and NORTHSIDE a state title will be difficult. BROOKVILLE is in their conference and do you think the JACKETS and SERBAY would like another shot at those BEES? GOOD LUCK JM!
# 3 CHANCELLOR CHARGERS: You want a district and playoff sleeper? well you got one in this bunch! they are loaded with talent and D1 prospects. this team is still young but has grown up since the 1 and 9 team 2 years ago. BOB OLIVER took a lot of criticism for benching his older players 2 years ago replacing them with younger players but it has paid off.
the offense is lead by IMO the best qb in CHANCELLOR history and maybe the best in the district JASON BROWN. BROWN a D1 prospect and just a JR. has the ability to scramble and throw the ball through a brick wall. he was impressive against a good LAFAYETTE team in a scrimmage last week. he is aided by 6 ft 7 prospect EMANUEL JENKINS and JARROD BROWN very capable targets along with out of the backfield receiver MARIO WISDOM. with WISDOM at rb and BROWN running the CHARGERS will run behind a very good o line lead by EJ FIELDS D1 prospect and only a JR. YETUR GROSS MATOS and GEORGE BROWN still young puppies. this team not like old sluggish CHANCELLOR offensive teams should be able to move the ball.
On defense with BOB OLIVER the old defensive guru the CHARGERS will be good like all CHANCELLOR teams are. DE. MATOS leads the way with JACOB EARNEST AND WISDOM leading the linebackers. their db's may be their weakness with ZANDER ROYSTON AND QUINCY PFOST BANKS graduated and KEMONI DUNN the only returning db. in the past you never worry about a CHARGER defense as OLIVER IMO is one of the best D cordinators anywhere!
the CHARGERS have a murderous schedule to start the season RIVERBEND, PONAX, EASTERN VIEW, LIBERTY will be a test before JM and and COURTLAND in district play! if they can go 2 and 2 against those tough teams and split with JM and CHANCELLOR I think they will be playoff bound. this is my sleeper team. they have the talent to beat JM and CHANCELLOR but they are a year away from that! GOOD LUCK CHARGERS!
#4 KG FOXES : the foxes lost a lot last year but with a good jv team with a lot of talent they may rebound pretty fast. the jv team finished second to JM with some good looking athletes. ex fbg Christian coach VERN LUNSFORD has installed the wing t. LUNSFORD cut his teeth under TIM COLEMAN so this should be a good fit. with ZACK JOHNSON gone JEFF SMITH will be looking for a qb to go along with excellent back RASHAD PEYTON. three o linemen return and they are huge. KYLE GARDINER, TRAVIS MC DONNEL and KC MATHERLY anchor the line. all receivers are green as graduation has taken a toll on the KG receivers.
on defense the FOXES return 8 lead by MATHERLY,GARRETT BLOM and backers PEYTON and CHAD BLASER. defense will be a rare strength for new D coach BRECK HALL.
All in all the FOXES will be a mystery this season. defense will be better and if the FOXES find a qb they should play 500 ball. GOOD LUCK KG!
# 5 SP0TSYLVANIA KNIGHTS: New coaching staff with TIM COLEMAN helping the future looks bright after many years. not a lot of talent but plenty of heart.
leading offense stars RB MICHAEL SHELTON QB CHRIS RECOBE LINEMEN EVAN HUDGINS and WR STEPHON CARTER.
on defense DE TONY THURST0N, STEVE YONTZ, ALEX RAPPA and DB CHARLEY LEWIS.
The KNIGHTS could win 2 or 3 games this year which would be a good first year for first year coach AL JOHNSON. GOOD LUCK MY BOYS FROM POST OAK!
# 6 CAROLINE CAVALIERS: CAVS coach ANTRON YATES is rebuilding his team. they will be lucky to break the win column this year. they return only 2 on both sides of the ball. hang in there CAV fans better days ahead!
there my picks are. agree or disagree football season is here! LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!
