Week one is over and we had no surprises in the district. Most teams won that I figured would win and a lot of lopsided victories! A small sample size but it looks like we have two excellent, two rebuilding teams with a few question marks and two that needs to find out who they are! Lets see how they rank this week:
# 1: CHANCELLOR: The chargers did nothing to drop them down this week even though they played sloppy but you have to remember they played a good team Riverbend! Looks like they have a good defense this year but whats new for a Bob Oliver team? The only question I had with this talented team was their running game and that may have been solved with Lovell Armstead with only 5 carries for 85 yards and a td. He may be the answer to the Chargers rushing attack! They need a half way running attack to open up Jason Brown's air force with all those talented receivers! Brown had a slow start but showed his talent with a 20 yd strike to CJ Washington who made a great diving catch. The bears did a good job of controlling the talented receivers! We will see what they are made of this week as they play Massaponax!
# 2 : KG : How good are the Foxes? They had no trouble with a very weak W@L team. Jordan Alley seem to have lived up to his expectations with speed and quickness! But before you Fox fans get excited you will have to play a good Essex Trojan team this week and that will not be the same walk over like W@L. The foxes are good because they held their own in a scrimmage against a good Brooke Point team that upset the # 1 team in the area Colonial Forge team Friday night. We shall see how good they are as the season goes on.
# 3: JM: I hope the Jacket fans read nothing into the lopsided loss that Dinwiddie put on the jackets. Dinwiddie is one of the best teams in the state and I figured they had little chance against the Generals. Right now JM has two many puppies to compete with a team like Dinwiddie. Watched it on TV and the two young QB's was over matched. The game was too fast for them right now but coach Serbay and his fine staff will work with them and by mid season the Jackets will look like a different team. There is a lot of talent on JM and they need to jell and they will.
# 4: COURTLAND: The cougars hung with the talented Ponax team for the first half but like JM the cougars had too many puppies to compete against the panthers. They are very much like JM full of young un's but JC will work with them and they will mature and be a different looking team by mid season. Its hard to compete with much bigger schools like Ponax with a young and rebuilding team like Courtland. This is the last year the Cougars will play Ponax and Riverbend as they was dropped from the schedule due to a miss match in student size!
# 5 :Caroline : The Cavaliers had a tough time against a good Monacan team. Too much talent for Caroline right now but with a good Qb and a few good receivers they will develop as the season goes on and be much better against some of the weaker teams in the district but not this week against a always good Patrick Henry team.
# 6: Spotsylvania: Very much like Caroline the knights was totally out talented against a always good Eastern View team. The knights only had 5 first downs and 78 yrds total offense. The lack of speed and size and talent is causing problems for Spotsy. Going to be a work in progress this year but lets keep our fingers crossed they have bottomed out and the slow progress of respectability will return in the next few years. Good luck boys from post oak as better days are ahead!
Ok the first week has passed and no changes thus far. The district looks weak still with only 2 that might be playoff bound. Get out and support your favorite HS team. There is nothing like HS football. See you at the games!
