Junior guard Yomarius Eley scored 18 points Wednesday to lead York High’s boys basketball team to its second win in a row, and the Falcons will face the host Tabb Tigers in Thursday’s championship matchup at the BayPort Credit Union Holiday Tournament.
The final contest will tip off at 7:30, preceded by the consolation matchup between Poquoson and Gloucester at 6.
York (2-4) almost fell victim to poor free-throw shooting in the final quarter, but the Falcons held on to defeat Gloucester 46-42 in the opening contest.
In the final 10 seconds, York’s Quinton Perrin blocked a shot in the left corner to keep the Dukes from scoring. While Gloucester retained possession, a last-ditch shot from the left corner by Juwan Thornton missed its mark.
The Falcons converted only 4-of-17 free throws in the final quarter, but they held on to their narrow lead with the help of key rebounds, with Jayden Flood-Brown and Thomas Bert grabbing the lion’s share.
Perrin sparked York through the first quarter, scoring eight of the Falcons’ first 10 points, including a 3-pointer from the left corner that gave York a 10-4 lead. The Falcons led 14-10 after the first quarter.
Gloucester clawed back into the game midway through the second as Thornton drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner, then followed with a steal and high-arched lay-in to close the gap to 18-17. Hunter Green put back a Marcellus Mencarini missed shot to give the Dukes their first lead of the game at 21-20. It was short-lived and York took a 24-23 lead into intermission.
Eley scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter as the Falcons outscored Gloucester 16-9 to open up a 40-32 margin. Jacob Durren led the Dukes with 13.
Tabb 53, Poquoson 35
In the nightcap, junior guard Nick Thomas served as the Tigers’ hot hand, nailing five 3-point shots as Tabb opened up a 28-16 halftime lead and won.
Thomas led all scorers with 23 points, and both he and Tabb coach Doug Baggett credited the movement of the offense with helping him to find open shots.
“We were able to move the ball quickly and hit the open man,” said Thomas, whose 22-footer from the top of the key gave Tabb a 21-16 lead early in the second quarter. Thomas’ 3-pointer keyed a 13-0 run by the Tigers to end the first half.
“Our team’s basketball IQ is very good,” added Baggett, whose team is 4-3. “Our offense is (based) all on read, and our guys know when to give it up and when to change offenses. I haven’t been able to do that with our team in a long time.”
Brody McDevitt led the Islanders with 18 points as Poquoson fell to 1-5.
The BayPort tournament, now in its sixth year, has been dedicated to the memory of Dale Lucado since his passing in February 2012.
Lucado, who was a friend of Baggett, was a captain and standout player for the 1967 Newport News High School football team. Four years after graduating from NNHS, he was seriously injured, breaking his neck while making a tackle in an alumni football game against Hampton High. The injury rendered him a quadriplegic.
Lucado, however, refused to succumb to his disability and developed a reputation as a key figure in local youth athletics. In his memory, all proceeds from the BayPort tournament are donated to the scholarship fund of the Boys and Girls Club.
