The 1st ever meeting between Bishop Sullivan Catholic and Life Christian Academy ill hopefully lead to a long standing series after the Crusaders won an exciting 29-28 contest in their homecoming game.
The start of the game gave the indication of a blowout as Bishop Sullivan scored two touchdowns in the first five minutes.
Quinton Gregory got the scoring started with a 55 yard touchdown run on the second play of the game to give the Crusaders a 7-0 lead. After an onside kick, Bishop Sullivan moved 39 yards in seven plays with quarterback Colt Minson connecting with V.J Johnson for a 4-yard touchdown reception for a 14-0 lead with 7:40 to go in the 1st quarter.
Life Christian Academy drove 63 yards right before the end of the 1st quarter to put their first points on the board. Jayvon Burrell scored from 1-yard out after a 34-yard reception from freshman Naquri Rogers to receiver Noah Taylor setup a 1st-and-goal at the one. Rogers ran in the 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8.
Bishop Sullivan scored just before the end of the 1st half. Minson and Johnson connected on three pass completions totaling 44 yards and L.J Anderson finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Johnson also added the 2-point run to make the score 22-8 at the halftime break.
Life Christian Academy scored two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter and threatened to tie the game. Jordan Cotman made a great catch for a touchdown midway thru the quarter and Noah Taylor made a great one-handed catch for a 38-yard touchdown with 36 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter that made the score 22-20. A personal foul penalty moved the 2-point conversion back to the 17 yard line and the the Eagles were unable to convert.
The Crusaders got a break when defensive holding was called on 4th down extended a drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run for Gregory. Two minutes later, Life Christian quickly answered with a 20-yard touchdown run from Rogers. Burrell's 2-point conversion run slice the deficit to 29-28.
Life Christian Academy cornerback, and University of Virginia commit, Antonio Webb Jr picked off a pass with five minutes to go that gave the Eagles a chance to take the lead. A short pass from Rogers to Cotman covered 68 yards down to the Bishop Sullivan 27 yard line. Rogers then found Mike James for a touchdown but the offense was called for holding which nullified the touchdown. Adarious Jones (Texas A&M commit) Andre Hawkins and Ricardo Carpus pressed Rogers out the pocket and the Crusaders defense held with 1:14 to go.
Running back Mike Martinez insured the Eagles offense stayed on the sidelines with a 1st down run. He finished with 108 yards on 20 carries.
