Big Mo changed hats about six times in an awesome JV game played tonight at Buffalo Gap between the undefeated Bison and the 7-1 Gladiators whose only loss had come outside the district to Woodstock Central. So in essence they were battling for a district crown, not to mention bragging rights.
The Bison prevailed by what I assumed to be a final of 20-18. I can't be 100% sure because I had an appointment to get to, so I left with 1:40 on the clock. Riverheads had just exhausted its timeouts and all the Bison needed to do was run some safe plays or take some knees to end the game. So unless something odd happened, that was the final.
Riverheads struck first on a nice 30-35 yard pass completion to Devin Morris on their first possession of the game. In fact ironically RHS, despite being a ground-oriented team, would not score a single touchdown on the ground on this particular evening as you will see.
Following that opening score, the Bison matched it with a nice drive and then scored what would turn out to be the winning points to move ahead 8-6 early in the second quarter. The teams would ultimately combine for only one out of six two-point conversions.
The third quarter provided the most action of the evening. RHS took the kickoff and marched 60 yards to score, although the Bison helped them along with a pair of 15 yard penalties. The Gladiators went to the air a second time on about a 10 yard completion to Jacob King to grab a 12-8 lead. Once again they missed the two-point PAT.
The Bison almost immediately retaliated, and moved ahead again on about a 50 yard 4th and 8 pass completion midway through the quarter. The pass at first looked like it might be long but the receiver hauled it in and beat two RHS defenders to the end zone to make it 14-12 Gap.
Still in the third quarter, the Gladiators scored their final TD and took one last lead at 18-14 on the play of the night for the visitors. A nice King punt had put the Bison in a hole around their own 20. They dialed up a screen pass and Riverheads' big number 88 (sorry but I don't have a roster to refer to and I just cannot remember the name) used his height advantage to pick it off and lumber untouched into the end zone. I haven't been to every Riverheads JV game but this is at least the third pick-six I can recall seeing.
That set the stage for the Bison to score the game-winner midway through the fourth. They used the old hook-and-lateral to put themselves into scoring position, pushed it across from the one, and then held on for the win.
A great game between two determined teams that proves that each program should be on the rise for the next several years.
