On most nights, when your team scores its first basket within the first five seconds of the game, and all but one of your players dents the scoring column, and more than half of those connect from behind the arc, you are going to have a good night and probably come out on top.

But unfortunately for Riverheads tonight, they only scored six two-point baskets to match their six three-pointers, they were not even allowed to TAKE a foul shot, much less connect on one, and they failed to even have a double-digit quarter as they fell on the road to Buffalo Gap 46-30. In all honesty, it was an ugly game that neither team should be especially proud of and it definitely lacked the intensity of a normal BG/RHS game.

Brett Hostetler scored that first bucket off the opening tip and eventually led all RHS scorers with 7. He was one of the successful outside shooters, along with Drew Bond, Dylan Craig, Bradley Roberts with two, and second-stringer Jason Ham, who banked in his first career trey.

The Gladiators hung with the Gap, trailing only 8-7 after one, and then took the lead on a bucket to open the second quarter. But in between their rare connections from the field, the Big Red just had too many turnovers and mental mistakes to stay within range of stealing the win.

As you might surmise from the no-foul-shots comment, the Gladiators also appeared to get the worst end of the officiating, even though that did not make a difference. The Bison just had a little more overall consistency, without being flashy or dominant, and just gradually pulled away. Thompson appeared to me to have the better overall game for them and Charles Weatherman was a force inside while Dad came out on top in the 55-inch TV raffle.

Making the night even rougher for Gladiator fans was a really sub-par performance from our JVs. They entered tonight's game with an 8-3 record which included a win over the Bison the first time around. But tonight, they fell behind early as the Gap shot better than they likely have all season and pulled away to a 48-33 win. Riverheads had stormed from behind at least two or three times in recent games to make up big deficits, but tonight for some reason, nobody stepped up to make the big plays. Maybe it was the Friday to Thursday thing.......

So not a good night by any stretch for the visitors, but aha. all is not lost!!! I just read on the newspaper website that the visitors at Riverheads tonight (meaning the Lady Bison) were also unsuccessful as RHS triumphed in both those games. So I guess we can call it a 2-2 draw on the evening!

On paper, the Gladiator boys are supposed to have three home games next week, with Bath on tap for Monday, East Rock on Tuesday, and Page on Friday. But given the weather forecast, I rather doubt if it will be that simple.
