BOYS BB: (1A) Riverheads 68 (2A) Buffalo Gap 44 - FINAL

BOYS BASKETBALL: Riverheads 68, Buffalo Gap 44.

Gladiators with impressive season-opening victory over winless Bison.

For an opening game, the Big Red seemed especially polished tonight as they rolled easily over the Bison. Grant Painter dropped in the first bucket of the season less than ten seconds into the game and his back-court mate Braeson Fulton scored 7 quick points to give the visitors a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes and they never looked back.

It was all about defensive intensity and hustle, which will have to be the Gladiators' strong suits this year, with only a 9-man roster and a definite lack of size. Tonight they converted numerous Bison turnovers into fast-break layups and also rebounded well to give themselves a lot of second-chance opportunities. They did not need the long ball to win this one, but still used it effectively as Fulton knocked down two triples, and Painter had one, as did point guard Elijah Dunlap and reserve guard Josh Kinzel. Those four in order led the scoring with 22, 13, 9 and 8, as all nine Gladiators dented the scoring column. In fact if tonight's substitution pattern is any example, the entire team will see plenty of action this season and there might not be much drop-off, no matter who is in the game at any given time.

Due to their annual football delay, the Gladiators will have numerous games in the coming weeks, including two home games yet this week. Stonewall Jackson comes to Greenville on Friday night and East Rock visits on Saturday afternoon, in a game moved up to a 3:00 JV tip. That one should be an interesting test for the Gladiators as they will have a chance to make a statement as to whether or not they will be an upper echelon team this season.

The JV game tonight was much more competitive. The Bison knocked down some early threes to jump ahead 18-7, only to see Riverheads close out the half on a 14-2 run to take a 21-20 halftime lead. The Gap then came back to re-claim the lead and held off numerous rallies by RHS to win a tight one 42-39. Riverheads set up the three from the left corner for a final chance at a tie, and got a good look at it, but the shot just would not fall. All things considered, still a solid first game for the Junior Gmen, considering that Buffalo Gap already had five or six games in the books.
