Draft comes away from Waynesboro with 102-100 victory

WAYNESBORO — Stuarts Draft rained down 3-pointers on Waynesboro throughout Thursday night’s game, but it was a 10-footer that turned out to be the difference.
The Cougars’ Nick Lasam hit a runner in the lane following an offensive rebound with 6.8 seconds remaining to give Stuarts Draft a stirring 102-100 victory over the Little Giants in nondistrict boys’ basketball.
Fans came to watch a high school game and an NBA contest broke out with the high-scoring affair that saw the Cougars hit 20 3-pointers, while the Giants only made one as they did extensive damage in the paint.
“If we had made only 19 3s, we would have lost,” smiled Draft head coach Mike Gale. “Three points are always more than two.”
The Cougars were thankful for the 3-point barrage as Waynesboro stayed in the game with a devastating inside attack led by senior Davon Dalenta. Dalenta scored a career-high 42 points, 27 coming in the first half. When Dalenta wasn’t scoring layups, sophomore Damien Fisher took over, posting 22 paint points. Fisher had 43 points in the first meeting in Stuarts Draft.
“Someone always seems to score high numbers on us,” Gale said.
The game was tied at 47 at halftime and the Cougars held a slim 76-74 advantage going to the fourth quarter.
Waynesboro took an 82-81 lead on a Dalenta basket before the Cougars unleashed a 3-point barrage that saw their next five baskets come from beyond the arc, two apiece by Antonio Ruiz-Haynes and Lasam, for a 98-92 margin with just over two minutes remaining.
But the Giants reeled off the next six points on consecutive buckets from Dequiondre Clark and another Dalenta layup that tied the game at 98 with 1:07 left.
Lasam was fouled shooting a 3-pointer, and he made two of the foul shots to put the Cougars with 100-98 with 37.9 seconds on the clock. But once again Dalenta was loose in the paint to deadlock the game for the final time at 100-all.
The Giants blocked a shot, but Lasam chased the loose ball down near the left sideline. He dribbled into the lane and tossed up a floater that found nothing but net for a 102-100 Draft lead.
Waynesboro had a chance to force overtime, but Dalenta was called for charging while driving along the baseline, giving the ball back to Draft with only .8 seconds left.
“We were short a few bodies tonight, and I was pleased with the way the kids responded to a few changes we had to make,” Gale said. “It was nice to get a road win coming out of the break. The overall effort was pretty good.”
Waynesboro coach Sidney Diggs pointed to turnovers as a big key.
“We turned it over way too many times,” he said. “And the kids didn’t do a good job of finding their man. You can’t leave Draft’s shooters open, or they will hurt you like they did tonight.”
Ruiz-Haynes sparked the Cougars with 26 points, including six 3s. Dylan Dunnivan had five triples among his 21 points.
Besides Dalenta and Fisher, who combined for 64 points, DaJuan Moore contributed 11 and Clark 10 for the Giants.
The Cougars came away with a 73-63 victory in the jayvee game. Kevin Ooten paced Draft with 14 points and Colton Harris added 13. Tavyn Jones led three Giants in double figures with 15, while Peja Brent scored 12 and Nicholas Brumfield 10
