This one was definitely a story of two halves. Riverheads came out of the gate strong, thanks to sophomore Braeson Fulton, who would go on to hit a career-high 24 points, after his classmate Grant Painter hit his career high (27) last night against Stonewall. Apparently the two of them are going to alternate being high scorer this year from game to game.
After East Rock scored off the opening tip, Fulton went on a personal ten-point spree, while the Eagles had trouble finding the range. At the end of one, it was actually Fulton 10, East Rock 6. In fact we would go all the way to the midway-point of the second quarter before someone else would score for RHS.
Once a few others got into the act, the Pride was able to build on the lead, as the Eagles were simply not matching Riverheads' speed or hustle. They were also not taking advantage of their superior height, allowing the Gladiators to more than hold their own on the boards. As a result, things were looking rosy for the home team as they took a 26-20 lead into the locker room.
Apparently the ER coaching staff got those points across at the break and the Eagles started to take control. They immediately started to pound the ball inside and scored the first eight points of the period to move ahead 28-26. Riverheads tied it one last time, but the Eagles took full control after that and pulled away for the win, as they found 6'6" Dalton Jefferson in the paint at will, and also hit some timely threes.
Once the Eagles established control, Riverheads was unable to mount another challenge, perhaps done in by playing two nights in a row, not to mention East Rock's 13-9 roster advantage. In addition to Fulton's team-leading (and probably game-high) 24, Elijah Dunlap dropped in a couple of treys for the Big Red and finished with 10 in his first double-digit game of the season.
The JV game followed roughly the same pattern as the varsity. Riverheads jumped out to an early lead, thanks to three triples from number 3, Tyler Davis. His early flurry enabled the Big Red to lead for most of the first half but ER's Lane Comer hit an off-balance three from the deep right corner at the halftime horn to put the visitors ahead 20-16 and they pulled away in the second half to a 51-33 victory.
Riverheads is now off until Wednesday due to exams but that night, the Luray Bulldogs will come calling. The Gladiators will then travel into Staunton Friday night for their first-ever meeting with the Fighting Leemen on their floor. (They met in conference play a couple of years ago at Buffalo Gap.) If we thought the Gladiators had a height disadvantage tonight, we ain't seen nothing yet, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
