Pettiford has now scored 54 over the last 4 1/2 games. Good to see him starting to score. Along with Castle, Williams, and Henderson, Lee is getting balanced scoring from their starters. Vaughan will get his, but Lee will need others in the postseason, and it looks like they are increasing their options.

STUARTS DRAFT — Most teams find out quickly that it is not a great idea to get into a track meet with Stuarts Draft. Robert E. Lee is not most teams.

The Leemen blitzed the high-scoring Cougars 58-25 in the middle two quarters Tuesday night to wipe out an early second-quarter deficit en route to a 102-69 thumping in the Shenandoah District boys’ basketball regular-season finale for both squads.

Draft came into the showdown riding high on an eight-game winning streak, and fresh off an 118-point performance Friday night when the Cougars had a VHSL-record 18 3-pointers against Luray.

But all that good karma came crashing down around the Cougars, especially after the first quarter.

Draft’s shots stopped falling from the arc, and the Leemen were off to the races, turning the game into a layup drill. Lee had 44 field goals, but only one 3-pointer. The other 43 were either fastbreak layups or short jumpers from less than 12 feet.

It marked the third straight game the Leemen crossed the 100-point barrier against the Cougars, following 123 in last year’s Conference 36 semifinals and 110 in the first meeting this season.

The first quarter appeared to be vintage Cougars as they hit five 3s in gaining a 26-23 lead after eight minutes. But the 3-ball disappeared after that. Draft (14-7, 12-4) had only two bombs over the next two quarters, and the result was an 81-51 Lee blowout going to the final period.

“Draft forces you to play at a fast pace, and that is to our advantage,” Lee acting head coach Terrell Mickens said. “If you make good passes out of their traps, then there is a good chance at scoring. I kept preaching to the guys that they had to run Draft off the arc. They are capable of running off a string of 3s in a heartbeat.”

Instead of Lee (18-3, 15-1) watching the Cougars rain down 3s, Draft ended up watching the Leemen race in for layup after layup.

The Cougars maintained a 34-31 margin through the first three minutes of the second quarter before Lee put the hammer down. Jarvis Vaughan had six straight points, which ignited a closing 18-4 blitz that gave the Leemen a 49-38 lead at the break.

The rout was on in the third quarter as Lee outscored the Cougars 32-13. Jahleel Pettiford had four layups and Blaize Velvin three during the onslaught.

“We got to see what our fastbreak can do when executed correctly,” Pettiford said. “And our defense protected the 3-point line. We knew the only they could win was by hitting a lot of 3s. They showed that during their winning streak.”

Draft head coach Mike Gale saw his “bubble burst.”

“We did a good job at the beginning,” he said. “But Lee jumped on us in the second quarter, and we never regrouped. Lee is a big matchup problem for us.”

Now the second season starts for both teams as the district tournament begins Friday. Lee and Draft will host first-round games.

“It’s the exciting time of year,” Gale said. “You win and you move on.”

Lee’s Vaughan finished with a game-high 29 points, while Pettiford had a season high 18, Akadeon Napier 11 and Velvin 10. Nick Lasam led the Cougars with 23 and Mark Rodgers tallied 12.

Lee’s jayvees put the finishing touches on a perfect 20-0 season with an 80-48 romp over the Cougars. Javon Battle led the Leemen with 14 points, while Kyiam Brown added 12 and Carmelo Pacheco-Whitelow 11. Chase Schages topped Draft with nine and Messiah Barber tallied eight.

Lee could Gate City lots of problems. So could Radford with their great defense and Graham with its defense and tenacity on the glass. I'm going to make a prediction. Radford will win the state championship. I hope I'm wrong. I'm rooting for Lee and/or Gate City, but I'm going with Radford. I think they beat GC in a game well below GCs average scores such as a 58-57 type game, and not an 80+ point/type of game.

Depends on where they play. If it's at UVa-Wise, Gate City will win. If it's somewhere else, Radford probably has a decent shot.

Hard to argue that logic. Case in point - Martinsville was hampered by early foul problems and held on to beat GC by 1 a couple years ago at UVA-Wise. The Dogs then beat the Devils by close to 40 or so in the state semis in Richmond.
