Congrats to the Devils for fulfilling the expectations that everyone had put upon you entering this season.

And congrats to Lee for making it back to the state finals for the 2nd straight year.

Mac lived up to the hype, and it was good to see him go out with a bang.

With Ervin and Dean back, along with a few other compliment players, the Devils might just make it back to Richmond next year.

Lee will miss Jarvis Vaughan for sure, as well as a large group of graduating seniors.

But they will reload like they always do, especially with an undefeated JV team this past season.

So another season has come and gone in 2A.....and it was a GOOD one!

Congrats again Gate City - STATE 2A CHAMPS!

McClung broke Reddicks scoring record in the state championship game with 47.

1153 points in the season first player in VA to do so and nationally broke Kobe’s record.

VA alltime scoring for a season and all time scoring in career.

Congrats Coach Scotty Vermillion on career win No. 400

Mac McClung becomes the career VHSL scoring leader (2,801) is now a state champion too.

Reddick's record by the way was 46 points.

Injuries. It only takes 1 ankle turn for a McClung or Vaughan and things could be different. Injuries go a long way. Gate City only plays I think 7 guys regularly. That's lots of treads on those shoes. Staying healthy matters. Much props to Region D this year. I was rooting for Lee as I have relatives in Staunton, but I always cheer for Region A and I'm a homer for Region A, and I guess, a homer for the East. I think it's clear that as things have played out, the two best teams in Virginia this year were from Region D in Gate City and Graham. I'm always saying controversial things (and will continue to) but I'm also objective and state the obvious when it's obvious. Now, is there anyway to prove that regarding Region D? Of course not, but just my opinion, and I don't want to take anything away from Lee. Lee is the 2018 runner up state champs, but in my opinion only, Region D had the 2 best teams. Not that it matters because Gate City was clearly the best team.

I posted elsewhere that i believed Region D had two best boys (GC, Graham) and girls (Central, Ridgeview) teams this year but Ive been slammed for that kinda opinion in the past lol. I think Regions C and D were loaded this year, Im not sure that Lee team was better than Graham, Radford, Martinsville or Dan River. Some really great teams this year.
No shots at Lee, defending champ made it back to title game despite losing state POY George. They had outstanding season.
