What do you guys think? I honestly don't know anything really about Brunswick other than they have a talented dual threat QB and lost last years title game by 1.

Hoping you guys bring a good crowd. Quite a few good places to eat around here if you want to make a day out of it

I was told Friday night but I don't know for sure. Saturday wouldn't surprise me at all. It's a good little drive from Brunswick to Fishersville

When Giles played them in State last year it looked like there may have been 100 people on the Brunswick side. Reminded me a lot of the 2005 state game with Mannassas Park. They may have had 200.

I'm not a fan of either team's play calling from the times I've seen them play. Brunswick has some ballers, but Wilson's defense will contain them. With nemesis Riverheads out of the way, the Hornets will play with a bit more swagger, and they'll need it. That and they're at home. Wilson by 12

Brunswick by 3 scores ! Spartans win it all ! GO BIG RED !

The Riverheads loss definitely benefited Wilson as a trip to Giles is now out of the equation. However, from everything I read about this Brunswick bunch, Wilson might not make it past them. Of course if Brunswick does win, then they would stand a good chance of having to make the trip to Giles.

Was the above poster correct about Brunswick having a small crowd at Salem last year? In all my times attending a state final, I can only recall one unusually small crowd and that was by Manassas Park in a game played at JMU.

They had a really small crowd but they had an awesome Pep band with some good dancers. in fact I think there were more kids in the band than were fans in the seats.

Brunswick is a basketball school...never really a football hotbed until very recently so no real big crowd following. Plus a long trip, cold weather, pricey admission cost = small following. A bunch of the good folks in southside Va just can't afford it.

I thought newsleader paper said Friday night. Have to decide whether I want to drive to vt or wmhs Friday night. I don't like either place.

No Brunswick is not a football school, but we do however, support our kids. Let's remember last year's State Championship game was played under some doubt, that is, whether it is was even going to be played or not. The weather conditions were horrible; raining, cold (mid to low 30's, chances of snow), I'm not sure if many fans would have traveled 4 plus hours in those conditions. Even still, what's not mentioned about that game was that the beloved Giles really got lucky in that game. All who watched, knows that but probably wont admit it. But hey, on Giles behalf, that's what makes champions...and a little luck doesn't hurt. If weather conditions were different, i honestly think the ending to that story would have been different...even with less than 100 in attendance. I also notice not a lot of you all on here are giving Brunswick a lot of credit this year either. Just remember, speed kills...and neutralizes power.

Also, you guys need to ease up on the "affordability" argument, I know where you are going with that. If we can afford to support our basketball team in large numbers, why can't we "afford" to support our football team?

What a ridiculous post. I'm glad Giles did not use weather as an excuse not to be there. I'd go with that also to help make it look better for u guys. It was embarrassing. Luck, u also go with that if it helps u sleep at night. Nothing about luck there my friend.

Funny how luck and determination seem to go hand in hand....it was a heck of a game...two deserving teams...weather didn't play a part in the outcome and sure as hell shouldn't have hurt attendance,,,,,barely any rain at all during our game...Giles fans filled up Haysi in 93 in a monsoon mudbowl........its only 2.5 hours from Brunswick to Salem.....just saying that a good football team (and that's what Brunswick has and had last year) deserves to have all of their community support...GO GILES...............P.S. To be honest I don't want to see Brunswick in the semis.....but if it comes to that it should be another good game......

You Giles guys posting on this thread are ridicules in your criticism of the fans who supported Brunswick in the State game. Salem is at minimum 3 hours away on a very bad weather weekend two weeks before Christmas and it easy for you guys who are just 45 minutes away to be critical of people having to travel 3 hours... And I can speak from facts because I was there to support my nephews who played and my brother who coaches at Brunswick. I can speak to the challenge of getting there because my family and I am from Bowie, MD...my sister and her family are from Bel Air, MD and guess what they were there...my other sister and her husband are from Greensboro, NC and you guess it they were there. And my family alone had nearly 25 people from much further than Lawrenceville or Giles there to support Brunswick. There was definitely well over 100+ fans there to support Brunswick at that game.

While it was a great game played between two teams...if you don't think completing a pass on the last play of regulation after only completing maybe 4 or 5 the entire game has an element of luck you then I don't what does...
Hopefully, we will get to do it all again with this year's teams in two weeks!! We would certainly welcome the opportunity!!

The Owens family will be there if the game is played...but first we will be in Fisherville for Wilson Memorial...

I'm not going to nickel and dime this argument, but it is just the type of response I expected from Giles fans and rightfully so. Most posters cant seem to see things objectively, and they seem to take everything that's PERCEIVED to be against their team personally. Look, I'm not taking anything away from your win, you guys had a solid team and still do, but you should know just as well as any poster on here that winning, and as often as you guys have, it takes a little luck...that's a part of the game and a part of winning 'ships. However, I won't retract from my statement, I think a hail mary to the back of the endzone with seconds left on the clock is just what it is...LUCK...and from a team that had pass the ball probably 20 times all season. You guys have more knowledge about the game than I do, so I know you all know that bad weather neutralizes a team with speed, and runs a spread offense. I guess that's one thing we can agree....

First of all who cares if it's three hours away and bad weather, it's a state championship. Neither should matter. Second we throw maybe five passes every game and most less then that. Great catch by great athlete so no luck to it. Maybe bad football by your db's for not getting depth on last play of game. If we are both lucky enough to make it another week then maybe it will 50 degrees and sunny next sat so u won't have a excuse.
On another note Owens is a great athlete and very fun to watch. I think it has been made clear as to what he means to his team. Happy Thanksgiving.

Oddly enough...

The Wilson Hornets didn't get a postseason matchup with the Goochland Bulldogs this year, but I am just being made aware that the Brunswick mascot is indeed--- you guessed it--- the Bulldogs lol... So they will matchup with a Bulldog team again this year in the playoffs. Interesting observation

Glad you were there but as a whole your community wasn't......wish I had a picture of the Giles game against Powhattan....think it was 99 state game....in Midlothian....4 hours away.......pouring rain the entire game.....we packed our side.......Luck or no luck aside.....I think those players played a great season and great game....like I said before neither team deserved to lose......but I stand by what I said....Brunswick players deserve better support from their community...agree to disagree.......some Giles fan take it as a slap to call it luck...I guess you take offense to people saying it was lack luster support.......is what it is..........GO GILES

I was there and if it was "LUCK" that caused us to catch the ball in the last minutes of the game for the tie and place us in OT...what do you call the play when your kicker failed to make the extra point to tie the game again which would have resulted in another OT. By your standards...how hard is it to kick a ball straight through the goal post. I guess it takes "LUCK".

Re: Oddly enough...

That it is! What intrigues me is Goochland was up by two scores before Jefferson was injured

As TMBUCKTOO said it is not worth it to tit for tat with you guys about this, but you analogy makes our point... because on the first PAT attempt before the refs called an illegal motion penalty on BHS that should have been an off-sides penalty on Giles or a no call...he made the kick! Then on the second attempt when Giles should have been called for off-sides again he missed it. So it was unfortunate luck that kept there from being second overtime. Every video of the game shows the Giles player charging the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped... and for a whole year we have not said a single word about it as to not take away from what was a great hard fought game between the two best teams in 2A.
But for some reason you guys can't be satisfied with winning and our players and fans being gracious in defeat...you have to come on here and post comments criticizing the fan support... insult our intelligence by saying the weather played no factor in the game...that despite there being all kinds of warning about dangerous driving conditions not just getting to Salem, but then trying to get back home. But because the entire Brunswick County community was not in Salem, VA last December somehow we don't support out kids. Ask our kids do they feel supported!!!
Be proud of yourselves for how you turned out without commenting on or making negative implications about how we feel about our kids...Thank You.

Re: Oddly enough...

Again Trevor you need to work on getting the facts straight...they were not up by two scores; the score was already 14-8 when he was injured and anyone at that game will tell you that the momentum had already changed sides. So while it was very...very unfortunate for Jordan Jefferson and Goochland for him to have broken his leg. Let's not try to imply his injury is the only reason Wilson will be playing the Brunswick Bulldogs and not the Goochland Bulldogs.

Re: Oddly enough...

I am only repeating things that were said on here. I read on here that it was 14-0 when he was injured. I also never implied that was the only reason for Brunswick to win.

Fan support

I started this discussion so to be clear my intent was not to offend Brunswick fans. Not saying Brunswick fans don't support the team. Just said there weren't a lot at the game. There could have been many reasons why they weren't there. Before the game I met some older Brunswick fans who were eating at the same place I was and I talked to them because I grew up in Mecklenburg and played at Park View. I asked if a lot of people were making the trip up and they said no. They came (according to them) because their granddaughter was a cheerleader. I guess I'm just used to Giles taking a huge crowd to playoff games. Lee brought a lot of people to Giles on Saturday. Manassas Park had very few fans at the State game in 2005. I talked one of their coaches in another sport at that game and he said they didn't get much community support. Kids playing for a state championship should have a full house cheering for them but doesn't always work that way for a number of reasons.

Do u realize the comment about fan support from Brunswick was not even started by a Giles fan.

and as for running the spread in bad weather, try running the single wing in it.

Also why isn't Joseph Stevenson with Brunswick this year. IMO he was the best player on the field in last years championship as a soph. I was so impressed with him I came home and contacted some ppl I know at VT about him.

FYI:
It wasn't 1999. Madison beat Floyd County in the championship that year.

of course a hail mary completion at the end is luck, even by a passing team

that's obvious. Doesn't really matter how much you practice it and for a non-passing team to complete one at the end, well(that's why it is called a Hail Mary...little chance of success).

I will agree with tmbucktoo in almost all he said, which was completely respectful I thought. He is also right that the Brunswick folks never made any excuses and they lost with dignity and no complaints. In fact, I may have been the only one to mention after that game, just in passing as a neutral fan, that the weather played havoc on Brunswick's chances, imo.

The week before Salem, I felt that Brunswick would win the title. As I was leaving Salem, I said to someone that the freezing weather favored Giles and they would win because of it. Heck, sounds like it came down to the wire either way. Variables play a major part in games, so do a little luck at times, that's just how it is in sports and life. Prepare the best that you can for it and hope for the best.

Giles won, congrats. They may win again, maybe not. Good luck to all.

Re: of course a hail mary completion at the end is luck, even by a passing team

My 2 cents:

When your school (football or not) has a chance at something as special as contending for a VA state title, your attendance should not be >50. Elements, travel time, and admission is a small price to pay for something that is never guaranteed.

Dude, there wasn't a fan base for Brunswick football. It's a basketball school, which is completely fine. I remember reading the Brunswick local newspaper after the State game and the news reporter WASN'T ALLOWED TO GO TO THE STATE GAME because Brunswick had a basketball game the same day. That's the definition of a basketball school.

Giles wasn't lucky, Brunswick didn't know how to finish the game. On Brunswick's last posession before Giles got the ball to start their game-tying drive, they came out under center (something Giles stuffed ALL game) and ran the ball 3 times and punted the ball back to Giles. They should've came out in spread and ran it. It gave Giles fits all night long. Brunswick needed 1 first down to be State Champs, they didn't want it bad enough and Giles took advantage. That's why they have another rock sitting at Steve Ragsdale field.

That's why I said "I belive"........not sure of the year...Giles vs Pohattan............should have known it wasn't 99...clock game in Floyd how could I forget...LOL.........GO GILES

I have a 70 inch tv in my living room...watched it many times.....I may say that there was some luck and a lot of determination on the pass play....but first off to call a play from the 15 yard line a hail Mary is just not the case....now Giles did stunt on the point after but trust me they never crossed the line...and you can plainly see your lineman grab his helmet because he knew he was guilty....but Giles never jumped into the neutral zone....not even close.....they can charge the line all they want as long as they don't come across the line...watching your kicker before the game I even commented that he would make 2 and miss 1....I felt very bad for that young man and talked to some Brunswick fans after the game and told them to help get that young mans head back on straight.....and as far as the weather forecasts I can understand some worries there but I still feel like the fan support was low.....Manassas Park was terrible in 05...they had a 29 game winning streak and a beautiful day.....truth is Giles fans would show up with 2 feet of snow on the ground...its just how we are..GO GILES
