As we all know, things were rather crazy this week with scheduling and as a result, only four of the seven Shenandoah District teams were in action tonight. Riverheads and Fort Defiance had pre-determined bye weeks, and poor Stuarts Draft was put through the wringer trying to get a game in but just couldn't make it happen, which left only one district game with Buffalo Gap traveling to Waynesboro, and two non-district tilts.......Wilson at Western Albemarle and Harrisonburg at Staunton.
The visiting Bison were the only team to come out victorious as they throttled Waynesboro 46-7 after giving up a TD on the opening Waynesboro drive. But after that it was all Bison as they scored 46 unanswered points to spoil the Little Giants' Homecoming.
Wilson took it on the chin 30-6 at the hands of the unbeaten Warriors and Staunton lost a 16-0 defensive slugfest to the Blue Streaks. I sat in on the first half of the Bison win, as did a number of Riverheads fans. Guess we all wanted to scout the Bison for next week or else our body clocks knew that it was Friday night and we just HAD to be at some game somewhere!
Waynesboro took the opening kickoff and moved methodically down the field to take the early lead, barely 3 minutes into the game. But the Bison marched right back on their first possession and took the lead to go up 8-7 after one. The Gap then scored three TDs in the second quarter to move out in front 27-7. One of those was a touchdown pass deep into the corner that I personally could not see from my vantage point but based on the reaction of players and fans alike, it may have been a circus catch. I left at half, so presumably the Bison added three more second half scores to earn the victory.
Due to quirks in the schedule, this game was Buffalo Gap's district opener but it was also Waynesboro's final district game of the season. The Giants finish 2-4 in district play, which will likely earn them fifth place in the final standings. Considering that they are in a rebuilding mode this year, they will likely look upon that mark favorably. They will now set their sights on surprising a Valley District opponent or two over their final four non-district games.
Meanwhile for the final five weeks of the regular season, the other six Shenandoah teams will lock horns with three district games on tap each week, with the expectation being that the November 5 re-match between Stuarts Draft and Riverheads will be the game that determines the district kingpin. But this Bison team looked strong enough tonight to give those two big boys a tussle and the Gap will get its chance to upset the apple cart next week when they host the Big Red Machine.
Wilson, still undefeated in district play, will host Fort Defiance and Stuarts Draft vs. Staunton will be the other district contest. I "think" that one will be played at the Draft.
