Here we are in February with Superbowl in our rear view mirrors... NFL is now over, college has been over and we are now looking towards the 2017 season rather than looking back at the 2016 season. We don't have a lot to talk about at this point in time other than recruiting so I started thinking to myself, is there anything that can give us a look into the future? I'm one of those guys that likes to look for trends in sports... I'm also a stat guy, it's just my thing. So I did some studying of how the champions fared the year before in an effort to determine who our 2017 champion will be... Here is what we learned.

13 previous champions made it no further than the second round the year before winning the state title. This would apply to Albemarle, Broad Run, Douglas Freeman, Hermitage, Indian River, North Stafford and Salem.

11 previous champions repeated and of course this would apply to Highland Springs.

4 previous champions made it no further than the state semifinals the year before winning it all. This would apply to Massaponax and Norview.

1 previous champion made it no further than the first round the year before winning it all. This would apply to Atlee, Bethel, Briar Woods, Deep Run, Falls Church, Green Run, Henrico, John Champe, Lee-Davis, Nansemond River, Tuscarora, Varina and Warwick.

1 previous champion did not even make the playoffs a year before winning the state title. This would apply to Freedom, Glen Allen, Gloucester, Hickory, JR Tucker, Kecoughtan, Kempsville, Matoaca, Maury, Meadowbrook, Menchville, Mills Godwin, Prince George, Princess Anne, Robert E. Lee-Springfield, Rock Ridge, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson and Wakefield.

There has never been a champion who lost the championship the year before. This would apply to Stone Bridge.

There has never been a champion who made it no further than the third round a year before winning it all. This would apply to Hampton, LC Bird and Potomac Falls.

The last 15 champions reached no less than the second round the year before winning it all. This would apply to Albemarle, Broad Run, Brooke Point, Douglas Freeman, Hampton, Hermitage, Highland Springs, Indian River, LC Bird, Massaponax, North Stafford, Norview, Potomac Falls, Salem, Stone Bridge

The last 7 of 9 champions reached no less than the state semifinals the year before winning it all. This would apply to Highland Springs, Massaponax, Norview and Stone Bridge

There have been 18 different champions in Class 5

5 Schools have won 18 of the 31 Class 5 championships. Those schools would be Hampton, Highland Springs, LC Bird, Phoebus and Woodrow Wilson

6 of the last 8 champions repeated as champions, they would be; Highland Springs, LC Bird and Phoebus

Hampton and Phoebus are the only schools to three-peat at the Class 5 level. LC Bird did three-peat but the first came at the Class 6 level.

Highland Springs, LC Bird and Phoebus have combined for 9 of the last 11 Class 5 championships.

In the 2000's there have been 17 champions among 9 different schools.

11 of the last 12 champions had 9 or more wins during the regular season. This would apply to Brooke Point, Douglas Freeman, Hampton, Hermitage, Highland Springs, LC Bird and Massaponax

There has never been a champion who had less than 7 wins the year before winning the state title. This would apply to Atlee, Bethel, Briar Woods, Deep Run, George Marshall, Glen Allen, Gloucester, Green Run, Halifax, Henrico, Hickory, Indian River, JEB Stuart, JR Tucker, Kecoughtan, Kempsville, Matoaca, Maury, Meadowbrook, Menchville, Mills Godwin, Mountain View, Nansemond River, North Stafford, Orange, Potomac, Prince George, Princess Anne, RE Lee-Springfield, Stafford, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, Tuscarora, Varina, Wakefield and Warwick

8 of the last 9 champions had a 31.8 rating or higher the year before they won it all. This would apply to Brooke Point, Hermitage, Highland Springs, LC Bird, Massaponax and Stone Bridge.

Which would lead you to believe that one of the following schools will win the championship in 2017... Highland Springs, LC Bird, Massaponax and Hermitage
