This could be a excellent game but maybe not! for the chargers to win they will have to get exceptional play from some people who I will try to explain! remember even though I have been involved in HS football since the early 60's I am a long way from being a expert and been wrong many times. remember this is my opinion!
This game is being played at the cougars den a big advantage for Courtland! it has been since 2008 since the chargers beat Courtland there. for some reason the chargers have not played very well there! advantage Courtland!
lets look at depth! the cougars have a slight advantage in this category but neither team is blessed with depth as they both play a lot of players both ways. cougars have the advantage because they have three excellent backs to wear the chargers defense down. the chargers must not have many three and outs to survive a blow out in this game.
for the QB situation the advantage goes to Jason Brown and the chargers! yes Chet Welborn is a excellent QB but imo none in the district is better than Brown. the chargers need to give him time or this game will get out of hand in a hurry in favor of Courtland. Courtland better have a spy assigned to Brown because running is a big part of his game and the Chancellor offense. wellborn can run but he is more of a pocket type QB and with that three headed monster needs not to run.
the running back situation definitely favors Courtland with those three thousand yard backs as Chancellor has a good back in Mario Wisdom but other than Brown have little else. Wisdon will have to have a good game over a 100 yards for the chargers to win and keep the cougar defense off Brown.
offensive the cougars have the advantage with those backs and their very experienced line. the chargers are smaller and less experienced at these positions. the chargers are mostly juniors but this will pay off next season as the cougars graduate everyone and their brothers. this will take a toll on next years cougar team.
defense the nod also goes to Courtland as they once again are very experienced over the chargers with big Ben Beatty and backers Green and Hokenson leading the way. this defense better pressure Jason Brown or the cougars will be in trouble. with the lack of pressure Brown and possibly the best receiver in the district Emanuel Jenkins will have a field day and Courtland will be in a dog fight.
receivers also go to Courtland only because of a great receiver Jabari Allen and a excellent target in Nick Grant as other than Jenkins and Wisdom out of the backfield the chargers don't stack up with Courtlands receivers.
special teams are also in favor of the cougars with Muddy kicking field goals and extra points as Allen and Grant excellent returners. the chargers have a slightly better place kicker in Austin Seipp but the cougars are better in the return game. this along with field position will be a big factor in this game. the biggest concern for coach Oliver and his team is turn overs and giving the cougars with their powerful offense short fields. they will not stand a chance doing this! One thing to keep in mind a big advantage to chancellor is Oliver over the years has been able to defense the wing t. they for years stopped Tim Coleman when he coached at Spotsy who ran that offense! he will have to at least slow it down to win!
Now wrapping this up ON PAPER it seems the cougars will win this game pretty easy. well as you know the game is not played on paper! these two teams simply don't like each other as this is the biggest rivalry imo between county schools. Courtland better enjoy this game this year because they graduate most their players and the chargers have many coming back. if the chargers lose this game they will have the advantage next season. but who wins this year?
the chargers can not get in a scoring contest with Courtland. I feel chancellor can't give up 28 or more points or they will get beat. they need to protect Brown and Wisdom rush for over a 100 yards keeping the cougar defense from pinning their ears back after brown. they have to play a clean game without many penaltys and turnovers to win.do I think they can? yes but they will have to score at least 21 points to win. over that they lose. do I think they can hold the powerful cougar offense to 21 and win? no! the cougars will score that 28 I said and beat the chargers 28 to 14!
sorry charger fans I just have to call it like I see it. I have no horses in the race and matter of fact both my boys played for chancellor! I can look at it non bias as over the years I have had ties in spotsy chancellor and courtland booster clubs and PA ed for all three schools! Glad its the game of the week we are doing on CVTV so see yall there! GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS!
