In one of the most frustrating seasons for Westfield football that I have witnessed, Westfield's season ended with a 19-14 loss to Chantilly. Although the defense was excellent and really limited the Chantilly offense, WF as a team had multiple opportunities they failed to take advantage of and the WF offense and special teams made too many mistakes (three bad punt snaps, two fumbles) and Chantilly was able to take the game. WF had multiple opportunities on defense and special teams to block kicks or recover CH fumbles that would have probably made a difference in the game, but Chantilly got away unscathed almost every time.

Note: Again, no good roster for CH so the names might be incorrect.

WF took the opening KO and started at their own 36 yard line. On just the third play, WF's Jung fumbled when he was hit in the backfield and CH's Davenport picked the ball up and scored on a 28 yard run to put CH out in front, 6-0 (XP missed) less than a minute into the game. WF started the next drive on their own 31 yard line, and again fumbled, this time Richards after catching a pass along the sideline, and CH recovered on the WF 40 yard line. CH was able to get a first down, but then faced a 4th and 10 at the WF 27 yard line and the 6 yard run came up short. WF was unable to move the ball and punted from their own 26 yard line after just three plays but the snap went over the punter's head. After scrambling back to the goal line, the punter (Richards) was able to get the kick off under heavy pressure but it only reached the WF 46 yard line. Chantilly's next drive was the only one that moved the ball all night, reaching the WF one yard line. After two runs lost yardage back to the Chantilly 6 yard line, CH's QB Griese plunged into the line but fumbled at the one. The ball went into the end zone where a WF player had an opportunity but failed to corral the ball and CH's Gobaira fell on it to extend the lead to 13-0 (25 XP) with 11:06 remaining in the half. WF punted on their next possession, followed by a CH punt from the CH 20 yard line-but WF's Vines blocked the kick and WF recovered on the CH 10 yard line. After losing 2 yards, WF's Jung found Richards for a 12 yard TD pass and WF cut the lead to 13-7 (Williams XP) with 2:34 remaining in the half. CH's final possession of the half ended in another punt and WF ran out the clock in the half.

The second half was mostly a game of field position with neither team moving the ball well except for WF's first possession. CH received the second half KO and punted after just three plays. WF took over on their own 49 yard line and moved to the CH 30 where they faced a 4th and 12. Electing to go for it, Jung found Richards for a 30 yard TD pass and after the Williams XP WF led, 14-13, at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter. CH took the KO back to their own 40 yard line, where several plays later CH's RB fumbled the ball as he took the handoff and two WF players jumped on it in the backfield but the ball squirted away and CH's Griese fell on it to save the drive. CH ended up punting at their own 47 yard line (with the ball going directly through the outstretched arms of an on-rushing WF defender who just missed the block), and after the wind held up the ball and a backward bounce, the punt netted just seven yards. WF ball on the WF 45 yard line, but they couldn't take advantage of the field position and punted the ball back to CH. CH returned the favor, going three and out, then WF followed suit, also going three and out. CH's next possession started at their 28 yard line but after three plays for no gain, CH again punted-but WF came close to blocking the punt for the second time in the half, only it was too close: a roughing the kicker penalty kept CH alive. CH did manage to reach near midfield but stalled and punted again. WF took possession on their own 20 leading 14-13 with about 6 minutes remaining and an opportunity to either run out the clock, or else punt the ball back to CH who had not moved the ball well since the first quarter. Then disaster struck-a third bad punt snap gave CH the ball on the WF 11 yard line with 2:51 remaining in the game. CH ran a reverse that reached the WF one yard line, just short of a first down. WF's defense held on 2nd and 3rd down and CH faced a 4th and one from the WF 1 yard line (they could have technically gotten a first down). Davenport took the handoff from Griese and behind a good push from the CH O-line fell into the end zone to give CH a 19-14 lead (2XP pass was incomplete). WF had one final chance to go 80 yards with 1:26 to play, but the CH defense put on a lot of pressure and time ran out.
