Chilhowie at Marion

Last year Marion came to Chilhowie and pinned a 21-16 loss on the Warriors. Chilhowie lost 3 regular season games, all to schools with larger enrollments than Chilhowie; 2A Marion, 1A GW, and 2A Virginia High. CHS has an enrollment of 397.

Chilhowie and Marion always play each other tough. Chilhowie usually hangs with the larger schools for a half, then gets wore down in the second half. If Chilhowie can play for 4 quarters, they just might pull the opener out this year. Marion has not showed much in the preseason. They beat RR in a benefit game last week. Chilhowie beat Honaker in a scrimmage, and lost a hard fought game to a highly regarded 2A Ridgeview team in a benefit game last week.

VHSL has them 414, regardless of how many students Chilhowie has they will be a force to be reckoned with in the West once again.

It seems that no matter how good either of these teams are, this game is always a hard fought game. But this year, I think Chilhowie will do the wearing down in this game. I think they will pull away after the half. They don't play many both ways, so that helps. Hopefully there won't be a lot of yellow laundry on the ground.

Mt Fan, if you go to VHSL ADM figures for March, Chilhowie is listed at 397. That is the lowest enrollment CHS has had in about 10 years! Just a few years ago they were in the 440's, but not now. I don't see them dropping much more, but you never know. The economy in Smyth County sinks!

Chilwar, in reading your first post, it kind of sounds like you feel Chilhowie is the underdog here. I respect your opinion, buy I have read last year and this year that Chilhowie returns nearly everyone and that Marion had a senior laden team last season and lost a ton. Do you feel most in that area would pick or favor Marion in this game? I know it's a county rivalry, but I'm curious if others would pick Marion in this game.

I would think Chilhowie would be the favorite and that Marion would be there for the upset. I'm not saying that's the case. I don't know. I'm just going by what I've read about both schools since last season to present.

Lucustootis, the Marion/Chilhowie game is always a very big rival game. Marion won 9 games last year, and They are extremely well coached, and have some good talent returning. They did lose several seniors, but they have twice the enrollment of CHS and their program is in the reloading status, not rebuilding.
Chilhowie should win, but you never know in this rival game. I don't think it will be a runaway either way. Best Of luck to both squads.

Best wishes and most important, best of health to both squads and hopefully an injury free game in what sounds like is going to be and ole school county rivalry hard hitting game. That's what HS football is all about. In an old-longtime rivalry game, there ain't no surprises in scores and it sounds like the same in this one. Any of the two could win and no surprises. Good luck to Chilhowie on the season. Great program that seems to be rapidly on the rise.
