We are a team that uses a clap for signal to snap the ball. Are we allowed to fake a clap? Specifically to start motion of clap but not actually a clap in an effort obviously get defense to jump offsides. Thank you for your response.

The rule book is silent on this topic.

And the defense should be watching the ball.

So go right ahead.

Let me also add, that while Rule7-1-7b says it's illegal to do "any act clearly intended to cause B to encroach." I believe this is not what that rule is forbidding. The fake clap is no different than a hard count.

The Rule I quoted is intended to stop the tactic commonly known as the hard shift or snap down, where a team's offensive line goes down to a three point stance hard and fast, looking like they are starting the play. If they do this every play, fine. Bu if they only do it on PATs or 4th and short, then that's a false start every time.

A fake clap, IMO, is not the same.
