BERRYVILLE - Not often in its first nine games has the Clarke County girls' basketball team been challenged while rolling to an undefeated start.
However, three weeks ago in their first meeting against Luray, the Bulldogs took the Eagles right down to the wire before Clarke was able to escape with a three-point (57-54) road victory.
Determined not to give the Bulldogs any hopes of an upset in the rematch, the Eagles turned up the defensive pressure, allowing only eight field goals all night and just 11 second-half points to coast to another easy 55-30 non-district victory over Luray to sweep the season series with the Bulldogs.
"I think the difference [from the first game] is we're a little bit more comfortable playing here at home and our defense was much better," Clarke County coach Regina Downing said. "We had a chance to work on our defense and I challenged our kids at the half to step up our defense in the first three minutes of the second half. They took it personally on the defensive end and stepped up and did some things.
"Our challenge is to stay focused on doing things right, that's the most important thing. Doing things right and outwork our opponents. We're getting to the point where they have to respect all five girls we have on the floor and they can't just settle on guarding Sydney [Chrane] or Anna Blue [Catlett]."
Early in the first quarter it was evident Luray (3-5) came to play when the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead.
However, Clarke County (10-0) responded with a 10-0 run that gave the Eagles the lead for good (13-7) with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter.
Luray was able to trim a couple points off the lead and pull to within 13-9 by the end of the first but it wouldn't stay that close for long.
With 5:34 remaining in the first half, Luray's Michaela Nichols hit a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs to within three at 15-12 but from there the Eagles started to pull away.
Six straight points from senior standout Sydney Chrane gave the Eagles a 21-14 cushion and they eventually pushed the first-half lead to nine points (25-16) with 0:20 left in the half before settling on a 27-19 lead at the break.
"I'm real proud of the kids, I'm mostly proud of how hard they're working," Downing said. "They come into practice everyday focusing and working hard and that's the key thing."
That focus and hard work paid off in the third quarter as the Eagles ambushed the Bulldogs and blew the game wide open.
Luray scored the first two points of the second half to close the gap back to 27-21 but from there it was all Eagles.
Clarke scored the next 12 points and raced out to an 18-point lead with 3:18 left in the third.
The blowout could have been a lot worse if the Eagles didn't hit a scoring slump during the final three minutes of the third. Clarke was unable to take advantage of several opportunities to extend the lead and settled on a 39-23 lead after three periods.
However, Clarke outscored the Bulldogs 12-4 in the period and took full advantage of seven third quarter Luray turnovers and 12 missed shots.
Chrane led the way for the Eagles with a game-high 19 points. Catlett chipped in with nine points and junior Hannah Ravenscroft added eight.
All 10 Eagles saw the floor and eight factored in the scoring.
Junior Katelyn Keyser led Luray with 11 points.
