For the first time in program history, the Cougars football team will play for a state championship after beating Thomas Jefferson 49-7 Saturday in the VHSL Class 2 state semifinals.
Freddie Watkins scored three first half touchdowns and Stuarts Draft's defense controlled the game in beating the Richmond school, which was making its first appearance ever in a state semifinal.
Watkins had scoring runs of 1, 9 and 5 to put Draft up 28-7 at halftime. The Cougars first score of the day came on a run by Blake Roach, who returned from an injury that kept him out of last week's regional championship.
