I was pondering something today at work after talking to some of my coworkers. I work with some awesome athletes that grew up and played great for 757 teams. Needless to say...they all failed out of college, didnt go, or they just didnt have drive to finish the race in college. Some just said....college wasnt for them.

I work with one guy that was a super athlete and got cut by the Raiders after being a non drafted free agent. His brother was a RB for the 49ers in the 80s. I say all that to say this.....I think high school coaching is hurting in many ways due to individuals not having a job that gives them the opportunity to coach. I think there are great coaches out there that just cant be available to help these young men and its sad....some of the best coaches are ones that just cant do the job due to scheduling of their occupation.

My opinion is if coaching is what they wanted to do they would get an occupation that would allow them to do that. They could coach little league and have an impact as well.

But the rebuttal to that is: Coaching in itself can be a full time job, especially at the high school level. I am currently a high school coach, wanting to make coaching my career. Thankfully, I have a job that is somewhat willing to work with my schedule, to allow me the time to attend practices and games, but I do not have much time outside of that to do a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that I would like to do, and also that would allow me to better mentor and teach my players. Unfortunately, at this time, paying the bills must take priority over doing what I love and want to do as a career. I would agree with the original post, that high school sports are hurt because good coaches cannot divert their full attention to building their players up to be, not only great athletes, but also great people, due to the fact that they need to pay the bills, and high school coaching just does not allow for that at this time.

Many people get epiphanies later in life when they have already set themselves up for the future in another occupation other than education. Its just that education does not pay as much as other jobs sadly. I am one whom left the counseling field in a public high school due to poor salary. Of coarse there are some that pay coaches extra with booster money though.

I lean towards the opinion of what @catchtds said. If someone truly wants to coach football, at least for a school, they should get a job within the school that they want to coach at. To the least, in the school district. Of course salaries in the education field are piss poor to say the least but, everyone knows that you don't coach for the money.
